I also noticed "popups" not sure what else to call it, is this due to compression, or is is something to due with the UE3, because I have noticed it in Gears, and R6:vegas.Yes. They had trouble doing this....especially with no HDD standard, but they did it. Although, the things that could be (audio, others) were compressed, and the game can get choppy, even with so few things on the screen.

Oblivion is only about 400mb larger than a single layer dvd. WHEN mass effect fits on a single DVD, it should end all the dvd doubt.

Heh - I disagree. There are PS2 games that filled DVD's, not to mention lots of 360 games will start hitting the max capacity of DVD's. If you noticed someone up above mentioned they had issues getting it all on the disk - and we're at what, the 2nd year into the 360's life? What about 4 years from now? Games, like always.. will get larger. Compression only goes so far, and in MS's case due to the fact they STILL sell the Core model, most developers will develop with all SKU's in mind - meaning no HDD caching support in many games that need them.
The fact that Sony included the Blu-Ray standard was just an awesome decision IMO, sure, it's lead to high prices... but like all bleeding edge tech... it comes down in price, and fast depending on the adoption rate. I really think Sony's decision will pay off in spades - we're already seeing the results in the PS3 games we're going to be seeing over the 07-08 period.
MS should just forget about the Core model and allow developers to make their games require a harddrive. No one cares about Core owners. :PtooELEET
I agree - MS really kinda jacked up on that one, and at this point dropping the support for the core would probably mess with MS's image even more, and they don't need that. Should have been a HDD standard, they had it right with the Xbox, and then took a step backwards with the 360.
Oblivion takes up something like 4.4gigs on my PS3 HDD, all for caching data.

"This is a monstrous game. In fact, there was a time - not too long ago - when we pretty much scoffed at the idea of fitting onto one disc. But, there's an art to optimizing the data that goes on a disc - plus we have a few programmers that seem to pull off magic tricks right when we need them."
Oblivion fit onto one disc just fine, but look at all the reused data in that game.. The textures im every dungeon was the same. I don't know if that was by design or what, considering that morrowind was the same way on PC.

That was due to the budget the developers had. They had plenty of space left on the disc. Even if developers had unlimited disc space they don't have unlimited time and money.
I don't mind switching out disks, heck my some of my all time favorite games had more then one disk : Any FF game on the PS MGS Didn't stop those from being classics. But I still have to agree, MS screwed up by making the HDD optional this time around. Would have saved the devs a lot of problems.myke2010what happens when you have to change disc every time you want to explore the other half of the milky way galaxy. for linear games disc changing if fine but for free roame games it takes away from it

The developer would have to work around it so it's not annoying. Take Shenmue for example. It was kind of free roaming and used 4 discs but changing the discs was never annoying.
I'm willing to bet that this game had to make some serious cuts just to be on one disc. It may not be too noticeable, however I'm willing to bet when it comes to the PC or so, that it will have a "Director's Cut" which would have more planets an galaxies and content that couldn't fit on one DVD. It's just a hunch, but I wouldn't be suprised if it happened either.
What does frame rate have to do with ccompression?Yes. They had trouble doing this....especially with no HDD standard, but they did it. Although, the things that could be (audio, others) were compressed, and the game can get choppy, even with so few things on the screen.

Of course it would but it would be wrong to assume disc space would be the reason for that being the case. The extra development time would be the main reason. KOTOR did not come close to using up the max space avilable on Xbox but the PC version had extras, the same is true of Fable and I would bet the extra development time they had for the PC version was the reason.
Well assuming they do port it to PC (likely but Bioware might get the team working on ME2 right away, plus they have Dragon Age and the unnamed MMO coming to the PC) you'd be right, but only because Bioware has already confirmed DLC for the 360 continually between ME and ME2. A PC port would for sure have whatever DLC had been released up to that point in time.I'm willing to bet that this game had to make some serious cuts just to be on one disc.
