I recall being here when BioShock was all the rage. Everyone claiming ownage when BioShock was released, no cows and sheep could participate. BioShock earned everyone's vote for GOTY for months leading up to its release and then maybe for a day or two afterwards...since then, well, not much.
I know videogames are meant to come and go, but the great one's are ALWAYS brought up. Halo series, Final Fantasy, Zelda, Mario, God of War,they never go away. BioShock has vanished and I think it has more to do with the fact that it turned out to be a game that some didn't expect it to be. It was hyped like God, and then there were some complaints of it being, well, boring and over-hyped by past-hype enthusists. Some love it, and for good reason, but not all.
Mass Effect, I believe, will be the same thing. KOTOR was not for everyone, neither was Jade Empire. It is a rather niche market that can honestly get the most out of Mass Effect, but Lemmings hype it to be their Holiday Savior. How many Lems will buy the game, take it home, think it's awesome for an hour or two and then, just get bored. I'm guessing plenty, cause like BioShock, this game is not going to meet expectations of those believing it's another casual's wetdream, a game for everyone, another Halo for the X-Bots if you will.
And then, it will vanish. Yet again another game brought up countless times as a GOTY contender only to disappear till end-year when nominees and winners are announced. Does it mean it's a bad game? Not a chance, though I still personally feel it looks boring it will be a God-send for some fans of the genre. But for everyone? No. It's getting overhyped, overexposed and I doubt we'll be talking too much about it when number 2 comes along a couple years from now, or at least not in such a general sense.
