This is Microsoft and Sony we're talking about. Microsoft's milkage already nets them enough money to survive, and Sony can last for god knows how long because of the money they make off of the PS2 juggernaut.
The funny thing is if MS or sony got completely killed off in the gaming department. They would still be making 10X more than Nintendo. If Nintendo however did bad they wouldn't exist anymore because other than gaming I believe they only sell cards.

Microsoft has more money than god thanks to windows there not going broke anytime soon, neither is Sony for that matter. They make far too much money in other areas

Let me spell it out for you: MS and Sony would have to be insane to make their next consoles Wii clones, because the "hardcore" market never went away; it's still there and it's still profitable, and it won't be happy with low-quality graphics and motion controls. If either company tried to compete directly with the Wii/Wii 2 for the casuals, the other would be more than happy to take over their share of the "hardcore" market.
MS is pretty much set, they've made a profit on their entertainment division for 2 years straight and their overall profits are insane. Sony has posted an overall loss for 2 consecutive periods now but I think they'll make it too.

Now I'll tell you three reasons why both MS and Sony would want to quit the hardcore.
1. There are more casuals than hardcore
2.Lower dev costs, devs are all complaining about high dev costs and because of this Sony and MS will probably listento them.
3.No point in upgrades, Face it these days a graphical improvement is hardly noticeable.
They will both make it, did you realize that Sony and Microsoft does more than just gaming, also if you want to worry about someone, worry about Nintendo who is one dimensinal when it comes to a business as a whole

No,not at all, i think gameply is much more important than graphics, but,sure all 3 will make graphical improvments. what i was saying is that sony/MS hasn't made as much profit this gen, so the next gen could be nintendo's again because of all the profit they have made this gen, they can make a fantastic console(probably, remember this is all a hypothosis).

MS has only had one fiscal year of profitability. To date the Xbox franchise has garnered ~$7billion in debt. The last fiscal quarter MS again posted a loss for the division. It must be increasingly harder for MS to sell the Xbox franchise to it's stockholders.
