Why? They will remain in the market as long as they can generate a reasonable amount of profit.

...I suppose that providing next-gen hardware, and using 3rd party developers for their game base, does require a little more investment than simply lowering consumers standards, shoving the same franchised garbage down their throat for the 20th time, and producing a console that is at least three years obsolete.

I wish Sony would leave the market, they overcharge for everything, walkmans / disc players / earphones / TVs and now throw in the most expensive console forgetting that theyre meant for games first and foremost.
Sony are money-grabbers, M$ too ofc , but M$ dont sell everyday entertainement goods to such a degree. And the 360 clearly beat the PS3 off so far.

they are not makin money..and the 360 still dont gaurantee microsoft that they will when this gen..they can stay and keep losin money or go away and forget they ever went to war with sony and nintendo..but i rather have them stay since it be better if sony and nintendo have competition....
this is a long term investment for MS because they recognized the importance of home entertainment and its impact it can have on the PC market so they know that they MUST have a hand in it in case one or the other dies, or they merge
The xbox has yet to make a profit, they lost 4 billion with the original. They're to make the 360 profitable by the end of 07's fiscal year. But they're still carrying the 4 billion dollar loss from the original. In order to break even they'd have to make 4 billion dollars in sales before the next xbox comes out.
Sorry but I cannot stomach to read anything by Sean Malstrom. That guy has the longest, rambling, self-indulging propaganda-filled articles I've ever seen. I think he wrote something like 5 11+ page articles about the Wii before it came out, and how amazing its marketing is, after finishing just one article I felt like I had just visited some sort of Nintendo cult brainwashing seminar...
