People keep saying that if Microsoft does this, Sony will get profits. But there are 9 companies that own blu-ray, so Microsoft can just ask Samsung or Pioneer to make the Blu-Ray drives and then PlayStation 4 wont' have a disk advantage on Xbox 3 and Sony won't have the contract with MS to make the drives. I think that in a struggling economy, the Xbox 360 and PS3 will be in for a long stay (as in until 2012-2014 possibly) to sell as many cheap units (that don't cost as much to make) as they can until Blu-Ray becomes standard. I don't think they will add Blu-Ray.
M$ is using DVD's, and paying out to companies, including sony, so that doesn't matter.
If Micros uses blu, which is likely, they will have to pay sony and others for the format, royalties. the actual manufacturer will get the most though, and im sure that won't be sony.

RyuHayabusaXWhy does everyone think that Sony and MS are like childish rivals, and will do anything to have to not talk to each other? They're both buisnesses, and if it was in MS's best interests to partner up with Sony to secure profits, they would. They're not run by a bunch of 14 year old girls fighting for the same guy.
NO, the cycle for a new format is 10 years not five.[QUOTE="st1ka"]i don't know, i mean by 2012 there should be a media format that can hold more space then blu-ray... right?XTy
It's possible, but extremely unlikely, since BluRay can hold up to 400gigs now.
Yes, 400 gigs.
400 gigs? holy mother of :o[QUOTE="XTy"]NO, the cycle for a new format is 10 years not five.[QUOTE="st1ka"]i don't know, i mean by 2012 there should be a media format that can hold more space then blu-ray... right?st1ka

Yes, 400 gigs.
400 gigs? holy mother of :o Actually that number is over 1 TB of space. Though its not really marketable.i don't know, i mean by 2012 there should be a media format that can hold more space then blu-ray... right?st1kaOne that will cost a lot more. In such a bad economy already people are reluctant to buy a $200+ disk player and $30 disks just to watch dvds in 720p or 1080p, blu-ray needs to get a really strong base first b/c DVDs are still strong.
Blu-ray 400gb is expensive. Though pioneeer made 1tb it coost ove 500 dollars to make each disk.-Dark-Light-Of course, It's expensive TODAY, but the future sees price drops. Also, maybe the Nextbox720 will just use 50gig or 100 gig discs.
Don't you know that DVD's were expensive before the tech took off? That's how technology works. Today's prices are tomorrows bargain bins.
I know M$ wants to push DD, but HDD space is too limited for that to effectively work, not to mention devs like Id are just the beginning.

I thought B-Ray was simply a storage disk. Just find out it's a format.Of course, It's expensive TODAY, but the future sees price drops. Exactly. When DVD came out man was it expensive. Now lol, you laugh at DVD prices, same thing's happening with Blu-Ray.[QUOTE="XTy"]NO, the cycle for a new format is 10 years not five.[QUOTE="st1ka"]i don't know, i mean by 2012 there should be a media format that can hold more space then blu-ray... right?DeadMan1290

It's both, hurray.
Sony and MS and bedfellows just like all of us are. They need each other to do well just like I need some other crazy fanboy that I argue with here that lives 5000 miles from where I do and makes the widgets that goes into the gadget that I build for a living.
If someone is doing badly it drags us all down.
Sw is fun and all but try not to lose sight of the big picture here folks.
I think they'll use blu-ray unless ALL of the following are met:
If all that is the case, I can see them not using Blu-Ray. They could actually go back to cartridges in the form of flash media since that would load at near hard drive speed and assuming the media has become incredibly cheap, it'll be faster than BD and affordable. If the average american household has internet connection fast enough to stream 720p content and hollywood finally jumps on the bandwagon and you can get a stream of a new movie basically day and date with the blu-ray release... well i think you're in a good spot and you don't need Blu-Ray.
However, if any of that isn't the case, I think only a complete fool would pass over on blu-ray for the next gen.
Plus, Sony goes to MS all the time so I doubt they are really gonna have a grudge match over this. Its not like Sony VAIO's come with Linux and OpenOffice. Its also doubtful that the corporate offices are running Macs.

Sony owns 45% of blu ray and yes no matter what MS would have to pay them.
"But there are 9 companies that own blu-ray, so Microsoft can just ask Samsung or Pioneer to make the Blu-Ray "
It doesn't work think that , it all goes by what share each company owns and the profits are split according to that , it doesn't matter if Microsoft goes to Pioneer or samsung , Sony along with the rest of the company's on the BD board will still get a piece of the pie
And i presume Sony holds the majority of shares so they will make the most profit if Microsoft uses Blu ray next gen, Microsoft doesn't want this so i doubt there will be a Blu ray drive in the next Xbox
Id say theres 70% to 30% chance that there will be no blu ray drive in the next xbox
