Atm, there aren't many games as actively played as IW's MW2. But it's just some months old. I wonder what do you guys think about this game's possible staying power? Halo 2 was released 04, and in September 07 it still had 300k unique players every day on LIVE (http://www.businessweek.com/innovate/content/sep2007/id20070924_587060_page_2.htm), Halo 3 was released 07, and 2 years later in 2009, it had 1 million daily gamers signing in to battle each other (http://www.videogamer.com/news/halo_3_logs_1_million_unique_players_each_day.html). And it has at least ~600k daily now, obviously CoD: MW2 being number 1 for the moment. Obviously, MW2 is a huge success. It sold 1 million after a day, But what do you think for its future, do you think people will get bored of this eventually or will it post numbers in the million years after launch like Halo?

With Activion's plans to release like 20 CoDs a year, the CoD franchise is bound to meet GHs fate.

It's only matter of time.

That game is the definition of flash in the pan. We won't be hearing anything about it by the third quarter this year. Especially since Acti plans to have ANOTHER CoD out by then.

how can it not??? COD 4 still does huge numbers on xbox live. World at War is still in the top 3 on xbox live!!! MW2 will be on top of xbox live till Reach comes out, then Call of Duty 7 will overtake Reach. But MW2 will still be in the top 3 all year long

If they release new maps at the same rate that bungie did for Halo 3 than yes it will stay around. The only reason Halo 3 is still putting decent numbers up are for a few reasons...

1: regularly released map packs (well maybe not so regularly released, but still, 3 MAP PACKS released)

2: ODST released a few months ago WITH THE SAME MULTIPLAYER and new maps that were at the time ODST only (i think up until last month?)

So yeah.. it SHOULD have staying power if the devs continue to support it... If bungie didn't continue to support Halo 3, it wouldn't have the staying power it currently does... it would be doing Halo 2 numbers after the 360 released.

Also, Forge helps...

Absolutely not. MW2 will be usurped by the next installment of the CoD franchise next year, and then that one will be usurped by the installment in the year after that. This will lead to people slowly and surely losing interest in the series. Take a look at Activision's other franchises: Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk, for example. No one seems to care about them anymore because no one wanted to buy new installments every single year.

No way. Look at how many people have turned their back on it already. It's too infuriating and too big a noob-fest to have lasting competitive appeal.

Gonna have to disagree with pretty much all that. Yes people play Halo 3 because bungie has done a great job supporting it (they update the playlists all the time), but you act like three map packs in two years is excessive to any degree. The notion that people wouldn't still play it if it weren't for three map packs released over two years just seems silly to me. People play it because it's fun, it's stable, it's well-supported and unlike games like COD it has a proper matchmaking and ranking system which keeps it highly competitive.

Probably not. With Halo: Reach releasing this fall CoD7 releasing by the end of this year (probably), it doesn't have a very good chance. Especially if IW maps ONE map pack again like they did with CoD4.

Not a chance! Far too many people have already jumped ship to either MAG on the PS3 or have gone back to CoD 4 or even BFBC 1 to prep for BFBC 2's release! IW screwed themselves with a poor excuse of a game that has suffered glitch after glitch and hack after hack!! The perk system and Killstreaks in MW 2 are waaaaaay out of wack and the game has lost all sense of realism. The Halo franchise on the other hand knows what it is. A futuristic shooter that in no way, shape or form claims to be realistic. But its fans love it and play it a ton to this day. If Bungie is able to recapture the gameplay of Halo CE and multiplayer that alot of us experienced via system link, Halo Reach will be superb. CoD 7 is in the hands of Treyarch and hopefully they will learn from IW's misteps and make a solid CoD game.

I would keep a very close eye on BFBC2 in March - it really has the potential to become the ultimate multiplayer (maybe until halo:reach?)...

As a hardcore fan of Halo2 multiplayer no game apart from BFBC2 has given me that same satisfaction working in a team to complete an objective. COD has nice mechanics but I was bitterly dissapointed to see that they haven't included vehicles, how can you have epic battles without vehicles!

BFBC2 FTW

Yes because its WELL SUPPORTED. I completely agree. What would Halo 3's numbers be if ODST never released?? The Mythic pack? if Bungie never updated the play lists? Whether its fun and stable is a matter of opinion. I have had my share of unstable games in Halo 3... this is hardly a reason to keep coming back to a game though. And I have had more fun in with CoD 4 than than Halo 3... yet im playing MW2... yeah... so pretty sure Fun has nothing to do with it... I don't deny the quality of Halo 3, but it is ONLY because of its continued support that it has been as popular as it is (the forge community, the map packs, the special playlists, ect). Halo 3 will dramatically drop in numbers when Reach comes out because its the next big halo thing to keep the fans enthralled. Much like the map packs and ODST did for Halo 3's continued success, Reach will continue to make Halo a popular online name. As I said before, if IW was smart and continued to support MW2, it will live as long as Halo 3 has (assuming they support it huge come reach) Matchmaking and rankings are definitely NOT what keep people coming back... If people cared about rankings than they would NEVER create new accounts so they can beast on the noobs and get their awesome K/D ratios...

Less than 10,000 is huge? Hell, there are probably still more people playing Street Fighter IV or Tekken 6.

7 might overtake Reach for a few days. But those are the people who don't know that Treyarch and IW make different COD titles now. and there's plenty of them.

Reach will reign the XBL sector until MW3. which I'll assume is highly highly likely.

No, a new COD is released every year. When COD 2010 comes out, the MW2 crowd is going to play that. When COD 2011 comes out, the 2010 crowd is going to move onto that.

Halo is spaced out. Two years later Halo 3 is still pulling in around 250k at it's peak. COD4 is nowhere near that, I've only seen it get to around 75k at it's peak.

It would be tough to imagine, though COD4 and COD: WaW still post big numbers, and they were released in 07 and 08 respectively.

I'm surprised WAW is doing so well.

Anyway I feel like MW2 should hold out better than most online games due to the unlocking features. Sure the series might Tony Hawk it, but that'll take several years, and a complete lack of innovation. Also anybody know if IW is actually going to be doing COD anymore I heard they wanted to do new IP?

I can't imagine it, the game is all about kills and killstreaks, and everyone tries to find the cheapest way to rack up kills to get a killstreak instead of working with a team to win. It won't realy have the staying power without all the community tools and the game is designed to cater to more loners who just want high scores. With that said, notice my tag, MW2 should still be up there, but once i play some other things it will dissapear, and not come back.

No. The next COD game will be out by the end of the year and everyone will jump to that. Halo 3 has been around for a few years without a true sequel, hence it's staying power.

The staying power of these popular games are as long as it takes for a sequel to be made.

Well i'm thinking when Vietnam comes out, majority will play that because it's never been done before.
