Hey all. It's been a while since we've talked about ModNation Racers. It's the second title in Sony'sPlay, Create, Share line of games. It's being developed by a new developer that has no history of games on their website, so they bring new and creative visions to the table. LittleBIGPlanet came out and made the industry all giddy with excitement. Scribblenauts is doing the same this year, but for another platform. I dig that developers across the spectrum are looking at ways to get gamers more involved in the creative side of gaming. ModNation Racers looks to have the ambition, but will it deliver? What say you?

"ModNation Racers is an upcoming user-generated content kart racing game in development by United Front Games for the PlayStation 3. It was announced and first shown publicly at E3 2009 and is currently scheduled for release in 2010. ModNation Racers uses the same "Play, Create, Share." adage as LittleBigPlanet to convey its basis in online user-generated content sharing and level creation tools."

was about to say no. But if they can put out some awesome tracks before hand, loads of custimisation to the cars etc then it should do rather well. Not everyone is going to make good tracks.. and alot of them will be like one with a massive straight.. great fun lol

The hype for this game have been quite underwhelming, as in people see this title only as a weapon in Sony's arsenal for their console war and not much more. Personally I am keeping this game very close under my radar, I think I'm one of the only people that finds this game very exciting, I hope I'm wrong though. :(

Like LPB it all depends on the community. Also if the game is fun and works.

I think this game is going to do well. LBP did a great job controlling the community, I hope they'll use the same system. hopefully they'll release more videos and/or pics soon.

It's not like LBP was a 9.5 or 10. MNR could easily match it if it's quality.

I havent seen much hype either :? When I played LBP for the first time I exploded on how fun you can create levels. Now seeing you can create your own tracks I got really excited as well. When I get a PS3 (soon) im definately getting this game when it comes out.

It's too soon to say. It looks like it can be more accessible than LBP, but also simpler so the novelty could die out sooner... Give GT5 this track editor and we have a winner

I really hope it does well, I love this whole "Play Create Share" thing Sony's focusing on, I'd like to see MS and Nintendo follow suit. I've had load of fun with Track Mania so if the game isn't broken somehow I can see myself having a blast with it.

me too, i need to get back to creating but it gets frustrating esp if you dont have help to problem solve. it just amazes me some of the things that the lbp community has created.

it sold like 2.5-3 million and has over 1 million user generated levels on the servers. I think that is a success

I dont think a track editor can ever have the depth of the lbp editor, modnation should be a blast though, kudo's to any game that includes an editor

i dont think it will have the depth of the lbp creator either. like can you create your own weapons? lbp is great in 2.5 d as well because it allows you to hide things (the machinery that does all the work) behind the scenery so that you can't see all that is going on behind the scenes of those remakes of duck hunt or the like

This is going to flop like PS home.

All it is is a racing title that doesn't look very deep compared to any other racers out there, and leaves all the creative part of the game in the hands of the PS3 community.

Race tracks shaped like penises incoming.

Why is the introduction to this thread worded like a commercial? I think it looks pretty fun. It's no LBP in terms of creation tools, though. Thinking about the crazy possibilities is still fun, though.

I hope that it does well. I've always been one for these types of games and if it continues to be successful that will mean more games are made in the genre. I'm also looking forward to Joyride and I hope it brings some good customization too.

I did not like LBP very much. Not that it's a bad game. I just had a hard time with the functions, but I am really looking forward to this. The E3 demos showed how easy it is to make some really amazing tracks .

No, LittleBigPlanet is one of my favorite games ever. This won't be because it is a kart-racer. Yes, they both offer the same thing, but in different genres. I enjoy platformers infinitely more than kart-racers, so I believe I will have much more fun with LittleBigPlanet. However, Mod Nation Racers is still a must-buy to me.

Avatars arent nearly as cute. Fail But honestly, not really. It can be great, but there is a lot to do with a customizable platformer, racing games arent nearly as flexible

LBP is one of my absolute favourite games this generation, but I don't think Modnation Racers will even come close to being as good. One thing is that it's going to be much more limited compared to LBP in that you're basically stuck making race tracks. Even though LBP is basically a platformer, you don't have to just make platforming levels, as seen by a lot of the created stuff. There's a hell of a lot of variety and creativity in some of the things people have made in that game.

I don't think so, for many underlying factors.

First of all, this isn't as innovative or groundbreaking as LBP.

Second, LBP was desperately needed for Sony's software arsenal back in 07 when LBP was announced. This isn't the same with MNR.

Third, Sackboy. He's iconic. Whatever the hell that thing is in MNR isn't. I really do wish this was Media Molecule's project. I wish it was called Little Big Racers or something. It just needs Sackboy. Sackboy can be Sony's Mario and I feel this is a missed opportunity.

MNR looks very promising though. I'm not saying it will suck, but LittleBigPlanet is a behemoth of a game for Sony. It's truly an amazing game and my GOTY for 2008.

Anyways, I digress.

MNR does not have the same importance LBP had and because of that, even if it IS successful, it will not outdo LittleBigPlanet and everything that rided on Sackboy's shoulders.

the gameplay itself looks like a cheap Mario Kart ripoff to me, but the creation aspect will likely earn my $70 depending on other content and general reviewer praise
