No, they will be more compact and cheaper next gen, like the Wii, for better sales.
They took a gamble this gen with doubled prices for consoles, mayaswell upgrade your PCs for those prices.

A console is supposed to supply an inexpensive gaming platform that differs from PC.

I fully expect next gen hardware to all be affordable, in the $250-$350 range. I'll be shocked if this isn't the case.
I think there are two different demographics here and both could be profitable with the right approach. Personally, I think Sony would have done better to avoid following the leader. They were designing a complex and feature packed entertainment center with many features other than gaming in mind. They were trying to hit a market that consisted of tech savvy, early adopters with their product. Their marketing was geared towards the teens and early twenties crowd who like great looking video games. Their product and their arketing didn't match so their product couldn't offer what either group really wanted. They priced themselves out of the low income of teens and college students and didn't really capitilize on their features.
They should have priced it around $1000 and narrowed their marketing to the young, affluent tech world. I can't count how many people heard about Blu-ray and said $600? That's a steal for a blu-ray player! I'll get one just for that!
The issue here is that the PS3 is no longer a console.
The next generation of consoles will surprise all of us. Nintendo set a high bar, broke the mold, and now it's anyone's guess as to which direction the development will go. However, I think Nintendo has showed everyone that in order to be successful as a console you need to differentiate yourself from the PC world and still offer a product that has all the right features. The bottom line is that consumers will buy the product that gives them what they want. A $600 price tag isn't one of those things. This gen has shown that to be true and I doubt anyone will brave those waters again.

Sorry but the 360 and its peripirals are a total rip off in price terms especially on launch.
And your ignorant generization is laughable.

you dont need peripherals to play the games thoughand how many people you know not met through the internet do you play team fortress with. consolegaming in general is a more social experience. Invite your actual friends to play split screen around your big screen is more enjoyable than crowding aroud a 22inch monitor

When I see my friends I go out, I dont play games huddled around a sweaty couch anymore ... only expection is the Wii in the living room.
Occured to you that when I cant be with my mates for whatever reason I am playing it WITH them? not that its my most played game, profile is new.

isntit more enjoyable to be in a room with yourfriendsrather than talking on a head set with them?
Like I said, its for when we cant be together?
You know ... I have alot fo friends in college, which is an hours bus journey, they live in the opposite direction which makes it 90 minutes alot of them anyway, some are closer ...
Care to explain how I'm going to be with them every chance I get? When I cant, we play online, either 360 or PC.
And im sure theres as many anti-social Halo players as there are Warcraft players, there are many no life console gamers, a console doesnt automatically make you social, you can have only 1 controller and never invite people over you know .

Depends where you live, here in the UK both PC and Console markets are doing great, Ive been able to game on both with my friends throught my childhood.
Atm yes most of my college friends have 360s, while a few have up-to-date PCs .. most of them can play Source games, but not the latest.
UK is console centric like the US though aswell, it gets more appeal, but the PC is actually succesful here unlike US, then you got europe & Asia where PC Gaming rules.

years ago i would play rainbow 6with my friends but now most just game on the 360
Maybe so, but just remember what you or I experiance isnt in any case a majority, the 360 is selling at a snails pace, 2 years and only 15 million?
Its not a reflection on the world as a whole, nowhere near.

i hear pc gaming is quite large in europe. but i live in u.s. so 360 atleast around where i live is the dominate gaming tool for gamers

When i say social i mean in person, not over the internet. most ps3/360 games are made for online MP. if you wanted games that many ppl in the same room could play, i'd say the wii would be a better pick.

Don't mention LAN parties, they are awful, awful things. But I bet there are more spliet screen MP games on 360 than Wii.
