a lot of games do not run at 720p even now despite the consoles being HD.

so next gen do you think devs will use the extra power to run at 1080p or will they just increase performance at 720p?

most probably they will... i think next-gen consoles should have hardware capable enough of running games at standard 1080p...

No, they will hype it as being the standard like Sony did this gen; but the drive for better visuals will always push developers to make resolution sacrifices.

First party studios will probably run at that level (and even higher), but I doubt we''ll see it with third part titles.

Who knows if they'll even go the "high-tech" route next gen? Production prices are already damn high as it is.

I'm confident sony and xbox will have 1080p standard, and I'm hopeful Nintendo will at least go with 720 although I doubt they'll go 1080p.

Now if they can implement 1080p @ 120hz that'll be awesome.

I highly doubt they would want to go high tech next gen because developers have complained that production costs are toohigh so either they'll have to raise retail prices or do a very minor upgrade like the wii.

id more so prefer 720p, with a 60 fps standard, and probably a noticeable improvement in overall detail

but most importantly, a 60 fps standard

720p native at 60FPS, 1080p native at 30 FPS is what I would like to see.

yes and no. youll see more games being 1080p 30fps or 60fps lower quality but its doubtful well see 1080p 60 or 120fps games for a long time

1. the pc is usually a good measure of console tech. if you look at pc games most newer high graphical quality games struggle at 1080p or higher except with the absolute best hardware and even then. and its normal. its always been this way. wait until midrange cards are able to display the top graphics games at 1080p on at least high to mediumhigh then youll see a console with 1080p standard. and i dont mean the top games now i mean ones as they come out. basically wait until 1080p becomes the new 1280x1024.

2. its up in the air as to whether or not the compies try to push the tech that far next gen. its costly now itll be even more costly later. not just for the hardware makers but for the devs as well.

3. 1080p is hardly standard for tv. whether you want to believe it or not 1080p is still not widespread enough to warrent games being 1080p standard. 1080p and 720p have both existed for quite some time now even during the PS era however the standard tv resolution (almost everyone played on a tv) was 640x480. thats why most games from the era are at that resolution. its hard to say but depending on when they release it still might not be a standard

Nah. Why bother with extra pixels when you have to sit with your face in the TV to resolve them?

when will this myth die out? higher resolution are better no matter how big the screen no matter how close.

This is the biggest reason I don't put the Wii in the same class as PS3 and 360.

it depends when next gen consoles arrive, and what they plan on doing with games. if they plan on keeping the cost down they may have higher resolutions, but only slightly better looknig games over this gen. the other thing they might do it go all out, and get really great new technologies and physics etc, but keep it at 720p to keep frame rates over 30.

I doubt it and I'll tell you why. 1080p looks nicer without a doubt, but a game with better gfx at 720p will always look better than a game with worst graphics at 1080p... It's only a resolution and a game that's programmed to work at 720p with 4X AA will look better than a game with worst graphics at 1080p. I'd rather them work with 720p to get even more out of the systems than have to sacrifice on graphics like they are doing now just to keep games in HD. Why do you think we have so many games below 720p, but they are up scaled for our tv's? This is because they are stuck using an HD format which requires a ton of more resources. Technically they can make game look a ton better graphically at 480p, but the low resolution would lead to a super jaggie game. 720p is the sweet spot for console games and I hope ti stays.

And that's why PC rules over consoles. It doesn't have to wait for all of that crap.

By that, I hope you don't mean that they'll go all casual with the waggle joystick.

I agree. Then again...I think high resolutions are very much overrated. 720p with 4xAA is good enough.

I highly doubt that anything will be that high in resolution anytime soon. But when it does, the price for such ultra high definition will probably be so high not even the wealthiest PC gamer could afford it.

Maybe on a 1 pitch size TV sat on the other side of the room it isn't noticeable, but on a high pixel density screen right in your face it is.

Depends on the game, lower detail games will have 1080p but visual large scale monsters may end up being scaled back, Persoanlly i don't see the need for standard 1080p since most of the world don't have eqipment that can display it (my TV is only 720p)

It's that way now, sure you could have 1080p in every game today; but developers would rather push the eye candy.

My PC is only rendering slighly above 720p (1280x 1024) and i find that is a nice compromise for performace. The reason 720p looks like crap to most people is they bough 50" TVs then sit 2 feet away from them, my monitor/TV is apropirate to the size of the rooms they are in and unless you have it mounted on a wall a freaking mile away a screen that big just embarasses your media.

Really? What's the average eye's angular resolution, again? Because beyond that, you're not going to see a damn thing. And guess what determines the amount of arc covering a pixel at a fixed resolution? That's right, screen size and distance - the two things you're pretending don't matter.

Unless good 1080p tvs are dirt cheap when the next round of consoles hit us, they'd better not increase the res.
