The way Nintendo usually does it is they release first in Japan and then if all goes well, the US follows. I'm thinking a Wii HD release for Holiday 2011 and then the US release for March 2012.

Nintendo has to do something NOW. The 360 is destroying the Wii in sales and with Kinect around the corner, things will only get worse.

Microsoft will sell as many 360 consoles as they can manufacture this year. I anticipate it will be very hard to get a hold of a 360 Kinect bundle this year.

But Nintendo can fire back. They can release a new Wii HD console that is backwards compatible with the regular Wii and with more advanced controls.

The Wii HD could even be CONSIDERABLY more powerful than both the PS3 and 360 and EASILY meet a $300 launch price. Nintendo needs to wake up, they can't sleep on their huge lead.

This will also finally get the respect of the hardcore gamers and systemwars.

Who can think of one good reason why they shouldn't do this?

The 360 is destroying the Wii in sales after the release of a brand new (very good) SKU, in NA. I also doubt Kinect will do anything to impact the Wii, or hamper it in any meaningful way within the market.

They could do it, but I doubt they will. Probably 2012/2013, but you never know.

wii HD meaning an upgraded model? or as in their next gen system? i really hate when people make up names like wii HD or xbox 720.

I highly doubt they will release an upgraded model, and i'm betting their next gen system will come out late 2012

If Nintendo releases a new Console it wouldn't be Wii HD that would alienate all of the previous users. They will just release their next gen console instead of just updating the console to support HD.

Probably similar to a high-end PC right now. That is, if they try and push the graphics envelope again.

I also presume they'll settle on 1080p as a standard.

Why does Nintendo have to give up so much in the graphics department at this stage in the game? They made their money on the Wii, they pulled the casuals in. Why not cater to the hardcore gamers by releasing a system that actually has the horsepower to do 1080p and dethrones the 360 as king of the multiplats?

Why not? They can still sell the regular Wii for $149 along with the new BC Wii HD that plays DVDs for only $299. It's amazing that Nintendo doesn't take advantage of this opportunity. Why do they prefer to get pounded on needlessly?

Yeah I made a thread about this not to long ago. I think nintendo definately should release a new console next year so they can take advantage of the lead they have right now and strike when MS and Sony are at their most vulnerable being forced to support these new add ons that no one is going to. Because the whole idea of these add ons is the tech alone if nintendo releases something alot better and Sony and MS are left standing there with pretty much no good games and look incredibly foolish for not creating any real promising software first and hoping the tech they put out would be enough for people to buy into

Also seeing as how the 3DS is similar on a tech level thats not going to look good in the eyes of the consumer and developers that their handheld system is just has powerful and has alot more features then there home console

Nintendo DID do something. Secured Goldeneye, they have a New Donkey Kong, Kirby, They have a Mickey game coming up and the 3DS. I think Nintendo is acutally very much ok.

as for the 360 small. People are just tools, I bet most people didn't even NEED a new 360 and they just got the New one just because it's new. Just look at the iPad! It's a blown up iPhone and people still bought it! look at DSiXL! it's a Blown up DSi!

Wii HD...until Nintendo Says something, Don't get your hopes up.

They go where the money takes them. HD was still growing when the released the Wii and they decided to target the potentially larger SD market. They may well move into the HD realm due to the adoption rate of HDTV's being pretty good, and HDTV's almost completely taking over SDTV's within the market.

Nintendo, nor the Wii is getting pounded on. They've got the largest marketshare this gen.

If so then prepare for incoming bankruptcies all around for all the console devs in town.

The Wii HD could release in 2011 and last easily until 2016. The Xbox 720 and PS4 are not due until 2014 - 2015 so this means the Wii HD will actually be competing with the Xbox 360 w/ Kinect and PS3 w/ Move.

The cool thing about the Wii HD is that it would EASILY and I mean EASILY be the most powerful console on the market. All of the multiplats will look a lot better on it.

Nintendo can put 1GB of RAM for a hardware cost of $10. They can put a GPU that TROUNCES the 360 and PS3 GPUs COMBINED for $100. And for less than $100 they can add a Quad core out of order CPU that OBLITERATES, I MEAN ANNIHILATES the crap that is in the 360 and the overhyped Cell.

On top of that, it will be EASIER than the 360 to program for. And they can UPGRADE the Wii mote while they're at it. They have 1 year to come up with a reasonable upgrade.

Nintendo is crazy not to take advantage of this opportunity.

Well by the time the projects are finalized, components will likely have come down in price. Plus they get much reduced prices due to buying in bulk and forming contracts with manufacturers. Either way, they could end up with a form of stripped down, fairly high-end card.

I'm not talking about Sony or MS.

I'm talking about companies like Ubisoft who made over a billion dollars on a single game (AC2), and were still in the red for the year.

That's not uncommon with today's dev prices. It's odd that PC seems like such a safe haven regardless of console sales for games.

Sorry, my bad. I completely agree on that front, as look at how much production budgets increased coming into this gen. It was ridiculous.

I think we should be patient and learn to appreciate what we already have. If Wii HD did release it would probably just more multiplats, like the ones we already get on the 360 and PS3. And would we necessarily need that? We can already get that on the other two systems now. At least the Wii currently has lots of titles that aren't on the other two; it makes it unique. A newer HD Wii woulld lose that uniqueness and be just another "me too."

Nobody's willing to pay $300 for a new system when they already have one in this economic condition and the cows, lems and hermits won't care about the Wii HD.

Yup, there are many viable alternatives in order to subsidize the cost. I dunno how gamers would feel with ridiculous amounts of ads strewn throughout the games.

There won't be an announcement of a new Nintendo console until late 2011 after Skyward Sword is released. To be honest, I don't think it will be a Wii HD, it's going to be a brand new console that will tap into the newly weaned gamers from the Wii.

I'd rather Nintendo not go HD, when I use my 360 on a standard TV the smaller text is often to blurry to see.

I don't like Sony at all, I have a Wii and a 360 and I can safely say "you're dreaming" if you think it is even conceivable for a "Wii HD" to be more powerful than the Playstation 3 without upgrading to Cell/Blu-Ray, they would have to change everything about the Wii to even compete and that would cost more than $300. They'd bleed money.

it would be pretty pointless for them to release a WiiHD to compete against the 360/PS3 when a year or 2 later they'll release the PS4/720 and they'll be in the same situation as far as multiplats go.

What are you basing this uninformed assumption on?

The Cell is good at parallel processing. But at general purpose processing it is TERRIBLE compared to today's processors. It uses the same general purpose processor as the Xbox 360 but it only has one core vs 360's 3 cores. Then it has it's SPUs which are only for dedicated parallel tasks.

Today you can buy RETAIL an Athlon II X4 640 for $100. That processor MURDERS, you got that, MURDERS the processors in the 360 and Cell. Not only is it a much better design with faster stage pipeline and much better branch predictor and more cache, but it is also an OUT OF ORDER processor which TROUNCES the In order crap that is in Cell and 360 processors. And it's a QUAD core processor. It's not even close man.

Any developer would fall down laughing if you asked them to compare the cell or 360 CPU to the Athlon II X4 640. And Nintendo would not pay retail, they could get it for much less.

As far as GPU is concerned, you can get a Radeon 5770 1 GB for $150 RETAIL. That is a DirectX 11 card and it ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY SMASHES the GPU in the 360. And the PS3 has an out of date GPU with dedicated pixel and vertex pipelines which is ABSOLUTE TRASH compared to today's cards.

Nintendo would spend less than $200 on hardware for those main parts and that is if they go with off the shelf PC parts. They could of course custum design a processor and it would then be cheaper and MORE POWERFUL than the one I suggest here.

Nintendo could EASILY release a Wii HD with similar specs to the ones I outline here at $300. And it would SMASH the other consoles in graphics.

The 360 was released 5 years ago for $400. The specs were good for the time but 5 years later, a $300 console KILLS it. And the PS3 was release 4 years ago but the components are really 5 years old except for Blu-ray. Remember, the PS3 was going to launch 3 months after the 360 but BLu-ray delayed the launch.

It ended up launching a year later but the hardware stayed the same but it had Blu-ray. I hope you don't think the disk drive the PS3 uses gives it any advantage at all in graphics. It does however give it an advantage in that you can watch Blu-ray movies on it. And that's why Sony spent the money so they can dominate the next gen DVD market.

Microsoft and especially Sony will not release a new console before 2013. More likely would be 2014 or 2015 and by that time the Wii HD would have been on the market for 3 or 4 years. The Wii HD 2 could then be launched in 2016, a FULL 5 YEARS after the Wii HD launch, to compete against the 720 and PS4. And it would be more powerful than both since it is launching later.

I think that is a much better scenario than the Wii trying to stretch out a 10 year lifespan.

2011 will most likely be the borderlines of next gen and current.
