As a PS3 owner myself, and former X360 owner before my 2nd RROD, I was disgustedby the shoddy and poor effort made on the PS3 port of Fallout 3. Whilst it is common knowledge that PS3 games often look inferior to their 360 counterparts, it is almost unheard of that a game should recieve a lower score because such a poor job was done. I've just been quietly wondering to myself, what's to stop them from doing it again??

Nothing is stopping them, but from what i read in the playstation blog the other day, Fallout New Vegas for PS3 won't suffer from the same problems Fallout 3 did. When asked by a poster if Fallout New Vegas would crash the whole time and have framerate drops, someone from Bethesda assured the game was going to run properly on PS3. Lets just hope he wasn't lying.

I think this needs to be restated. Bethesda aren't developing New Vegas, and Obsidian's only PS3 port was fine as far as I've heard.

Having said, Bethesda did develop the unstable engine that the game runs on...so it might still technically be Bethesda screwing them over.:P

Obsidian's last game was Alpha Protocol I believe...

shinrabanshou

...which was a really good RPG brought down a bit by generally mediocre gameplay (which isn't an issue for New Vegas).

Also, it would be pretty funny if Obsidian were better at porting Bethesda's engine to the PS3 than Bethesda themselves are.

Even if it were Bethesda, remember that Obliviion/Elder Scrolls iV on PS3 was equal, and some comparisons have it running slightly better, and that game runs on the same engine as Fallout 3. For whatever reason they just screwed up on Fallout 3, mostly leaving lots of bugs unfixed and I read all the expansions were practically unplayable. For that reason I refuse to get the game for PS3, I want it on PC. I'll probably hold off on New Vegas as well as that's a game I'd like to get the full experience out of, so even if it is the same on both consoles I don't care, I don't want to spoil it until I can play it on it's highest possible settings....

It is Rare, yes, it happened with DragonAge on 360 as well. Who knows what will happen.

Oblivion might have been more polished because it came out a year later, while Fallout 3 may have been less polished because of the simultaneous release.

I haven't played it but remember reading it was also brought down by apparently being rather buggy and glitchy (although maybe someone who has, could confirm or deny this?)

True, but wasn't the PS3 not even out yet when Oblivion originally released, or at best the PS3 had just released? Maybe they didn't have the developer tools in time to get the PS3 version out simultaneously? There's really no way to know how long they worked on it. Although at least they didn't have the pressure of meeting the initial release date, so maybe that did help it...

It will probably be a horrible glitch fest since it's using the same crap as the last game. I don't really know though, I'm waiting to see which version is best before I buy it and I would rather have the PS3 version mainly because the 360 in this house belongs to someone else and I don't have a PC that will run it.

Have you played the pc version? Its filled with far worse porting issues. Graphic aside. I am talking about tons of crashes, freezes and stuttering. Osbidian is making the game, alpha protocol was garbage in terms of port/stability and osbidian is not as experianced as bethesda is with their engine. So yeah, there will be issues.

My experience with the PS3 GOTY version had the game freezing if it had to load just 4 NPCs in the wasteland. Some people say it has to do with the size of the save file, others say it's how it's installed to the hard drive, either way the lack of support from bethesda has frustrated people. I ended up trading mine in for Uncharted 2. Maybe obsidian will offer better support and updates this time around.

if I had to venture a guess, I'd say both versions will run equally. I half expect there to still be bugs in the final code of New Vegas, but I'm hoping Obsidian is a little more fervent about patching and updating. I don't think it will be quite as buggy/glitchy as Fallout 3 though. Fallout 3 had some serious freezing/crashing issues on every version.

The engine isn't inherently inferior on the PS3. Oblivion showed that, so there's no reason to assume the game will automatically be worse. FO3 was just an unpolished port at release, and got hammered for being so.

If I were to venture a guess, I'd say the games will look and perform almost identically on the two consoles. Which is to say the graphics will look somewhat dated, and there will be bugs and stability issues in each version. :P

I don't care, can't wait to play this!

I don't know, isn't that the same engine Oblivion runs on? Oblivion ran better on ps3, F3 better on 360? Seems to me no assumptions should be made at this point. As far as the game goes, I'll likely wait 'till it's good and cheap, long after the myriad of inevitable patches come out for it, and after they've repacked a new version.

I think it might be a bit better. Theyve already said on teh PS Blog in response to a comment that the PS3 build is stable, which is a mark improvment over what Fallout 3 was when it first hit PS3.

The PS3 version of Alpha Protocol was actually the one with the one least bugs. Also, in comparison to Obsidians earlier games (KOTORII, NWNII) it was a strong improvement in the bug department. (Still not really good though)

Anyway, the Lead Designer said that things look better this time around for the PS3. so heres hoping.

Not for Nothing, but the 360 version had screen tearing every time I entered a building. It was bad. The PS3 version had none so I will take the PS3 version everytime. Screen Tearing just makes a game feel unfinished to me. It's by far the worst technical blemish a game can have!

OF course, how often are devs really telling you the truth when it coems to this stuff? I swear I saw a Interview with Capcom where they said they optimized Dead Rising 2 to take advantage of PS3 stuf, but that game came outworse on PS3.

i am sure it will run fine on the Ps3, they probably learned ahell of a lot from actually fixing the problems with fallout 3 on the Ps3, ,ironically fallout 3 on the Ps3 had less crashes and framerate hitch's than both console versions of oblivion but it didn't stop everyone enjoying oblivion.

No it didn't. Plus all the graphical improvements were patched into the 360 release later so both Fallout 3 and Oblivion ended up better on the 360.
