What do you reckon? I think it's obvious that teh zell is a fairly impressive processor at the end of the day when you look at games like KZ2 and Uncharted 2 (despite its apparent 'bottlenecks'). Developers must be getting more comfortable with creating games for it as time passes on. So do you believe Sony will use a suped up Cell next gen? I don't know how true these bottleneck rumours are (I'm obviously not a developer) so I can't comment on them, but some articles say Sony dropped the ball with the RAM and GPU. As they know more about it now, maybe next gen we'll see TEH NEW ZELL AT ITS FULL POW10TIALZ.

Thoughts?

Why wouldn't it? It pretty much has to anyway. Developers will be used to programming a cell architecture. It would be silly for sony to change things up again. I would imagine a stronger cell or maybe a weaker dual chip config. Imagine the power with 2 2.8 GHZ cell procs. would make crysis 1 physics look like NES.

Future processors are going to be using something similar to cell architecture anyways. It will really depend on when Intel makes that jump. I could see Sony doing it again as it would be cheaper this time. This time though, they would probably put in a lot more ram.

It would make sense, considering all the money they spend on R&D and how developers are getting familiar with it

Its probable that they will use an advanced version of the current PS3 Cell CPU but I dont think they will pick one that will make them loose this much money.

There are multiplats(the best of the best multiplats) as impressive as thoughs games, but yea a 7800 by it self could not do it so yea it help.

Definitely. I think they had some news on IGN about this a while back actually; they're likely to make the PS4 sort of like a refinement over the PS3. Makes sense to keep the cell, it'll... 1-save sony money 2-save consumers money 3-make development easier 4-make developers happier It would really be a shame otherwise, since so much money will have been (arguably) wasted on the cell, and all the engines built around its architecture won't be reusable.

Unified ram next time I hope. It's been a pain for devs to make games with the ram split. The main gipes I have with the PS3's hardware are split ram, weak graphics card and slow blu-ray read speeds. Fix those and the PS4 will be way better.

Im sure they will use some variation of the cell in the ps4. After all the money they spent on it Sony will be stupid to start all over. Im thinking something along the lines of a Cell Version 2.0 or something similar.

rosko123

People used to say the same in the 80s and 90s and they thought that they reached the limit of video games graphics :P look and compare Crysis graphics to 80s games graphics and you will know that in the next few years you will see Crysis like this too.

Why no the cell Showed us what it can do and Devs are getting used to it and it will cost them less next time so its just too stupid to not use it again.

Knowing Sony im sure they already have another emotion engine in the works for the PS4. "How can we make developing for our games even harder???"

The Cell is a really great processor. I think they will probably just add more spus and higher clock speed in the PS4. Also I think Devs are being forced into learning to program for multiple cores now whether they want to or not. Practically every processor has multiple cores now.

After the train wreck that is the PS3 and how much money and rep it's lost Sony, do you really think they'll even want or be able to make a PS4? I dunno, maybe they want to go the way of GM.

most likely they will re-use it. Cmon all that R&D cost for the architecture, its gonna make sense a beefed up PS3 with better GPU and CPU and blu-ray is basically gonna be on the shelves in essence a PS3.5 in a way.

thats what im predicting, cause the prices for manufacturing will be cheaper for cell and Blu-ray so its kinda sensible as it will most likely have a better profit margin.

They will be using 3 Cell processor, each one being a identical to the one in PS3, only thing by the time ps4 launches they will have shrunk enough so 3 cells would use the same power and generate same heat as one cell processor of launch ps3.

Sony developed the cell, which was expensive, and have an unfamiliar and strange architeture, because they planned to save money in the next generation consoles with R&D. Sony lost money on the ps3 and spend huge money on R&D this gen just so they can gather the pros next generation.

I am 100% sure regarding everything I have writen, but when making my statement I only used mydeductive reasoning and intelligence, and have in no way official confirmation about what I have written, but considering I am never wrong, you could make yourself a favor and trust me.

PS:

The only thing I am not sure about is if the ps4 will have a Video card or they will simple add another cell cpu, making 4 cells. Rendering would only use CPUs, something very rare and hardcore to program, with huge advantages theoretically but would in pratical terms be a huge risk, because almost no game nowdays is developed with this technology in mind.

(while is a know fact Sony wanted to do this already with ps3, they didnt because developer cryed. Now the don't dominate the market i belive they risk doing for ps4 even if those were their initial and utopic plans, because they simple cant afford risks. But Sony is bold, so is anyone guess.

I agree, they will definitely rethink launch price this next round. I say they sandwich two current cells together and throw in some C17 and C18 to make Teh Supah Cell!!!!

If they were smart they won't. I mean a couple of devs are getting used to "teh cell" but a majority of devs were Po'ed Sony did it and decided to stop supporting the Ps3. The more they use "teh cell" the more devs start to get used to it but lets be honest, if the Ps4 sells badly like the Ps3 then more devs will get turned off.

I hope so, It would be awesome if it had like 4 cores with 8 SPU's each :o But moores law states that it could be 8 times as powerful as the cell, so it could be as many as 8 cores with 8 SPU's each. Though that'd probably be too expensive so 6 cores with 8 SPU's each would be the sweet spot :D

Currently the PS3 uses a "gimped" version of The Cell. The bottlenecks they speak of concern the RAM and GPU i believe. The Cell itself is very, very useful.
