If they could survive the PS3 disaster, they could certainly ride this one out. They'll be fine. They're just downsizing, getting rid of sectors that are useless or don't make money.
Well, we've been through this multiple times on SW really, some idiots scream for it to happen, some deny that there is any danger at all, most of us hope it does' not happen, and that Sony can stop bleeding Money. We will see I suppose.
In worst case, the "playstation" brand will likely be spun off and have some of the staff from Sony go with it. But worst case really might happen.

They should survive, but the PS4 could be their last console if they continue to lose billion over the next 4-5 years. I see more layoffs in their future however.

They better turn it around before PS5 generation though - because I could see the bankruptcy talk getting real 5 years from now. That being said, PlayStation division would probably be sold or spun off before it ever came to that.
It is crazy how many bad divisions they have though. First it was PS3 launch dragging them down. Then it was TV's dragging them down. Then it was VAIO computers. Now it's mobile division. Deer god. At least they turned around PlayStation division though, that's all that matters to me.
Their phones are actually good and they sell well but Sony overestimated their brand name again and decided to produce so many handsets every year and they release a new successor for them every 6 months instead of focusing on only one primary handset and support it for a long time with at least one year to release a new successor for it.

Yes they will, Kaz Hirai knows what he is doing, and he already admitted when he took the reins that there will be a few more years of losses before he can steer the company back to profitability again.
If you really want a massive company to fail and tens of thousands of jobs to be lost, simply because you hold a grudge against a game console, I wouldn't know what to tell you.
Sony will survive. It might not look like it does right know though. I could see the TV division finally being sold off and maybe mobile. I don't know what they were thinking putting more money into phones.
Japan has laws in place that prevent Sony from being taken over. They have done government bailouts to Sony and are pretty much part owners. If Japan changes leadership that doesn't support the bailout mentality then Sony will be dismanted and sold to the highest bidders. So everything really depends on how long Japan's government will keep holding off takeover attempts.

However, unlike Mojang, which was practically debtless and constantly increasing in value, and got sold for over 2 billion, only a very large company will be willing to acquire Sony and take on all those debts which have "junked" Sony's credit rating.
In Japan, only the telecommunication giant or one of the car companies can afford to acquire Sony. Outside Japan, there are plenty of companies that can acquire Sony fairly easily like Apple, Google, MS. However, Sony hasn't been making any profit, so any of those companies would only make their move when Sony's value drops even further.
In the event that Sony does in fact goes into liquidation before any large company salvages them, then all the intellectual properties, assets, studios, etc. will be bidded by various companies. This may mean PlayStation will go to one company, some of the first party studio will go to other companies, while some of the brands created by those studios will go elsewhere. We may end up with Apple PlayStation, Naughty Dog making Halo, and Uncharted becoming a Nintendo first party series.

Doubtful, Sony will can their other divisions and sell off their patents is it continues to go wrong. At worse someone like Samsung will just buy the entire division to gain their customer base IP/patents.

Competition is good for us. You can support your console and hope it comes first but a console market with only one manufacturer isn't good. Variety is the spice of life.

It works both ways. Xbox has another great game come out and Cows revert to "bu, bu, sales leader".

ve said the same as you but now it's looking ropey for SONY, i honestly thought Kaz could turn SONY's fortunes around but things are just getting worse with there hares being downgraded to Junk status again which means they have to borrow money at much higher interest rates.
After 5+ consecutive years of losses i don't honestly see what they can do to sort things out.
