When your best alternative is a $480 console with online gaming fees , why not just stick with the games you prefer and Sony's desired philosophy on longterm support ? Who wants to buy an expensive system that might not last more than 4 years ? Not me.
When the ps3 gets down to $499 and Sony exclusives start flowing along with MGS4 and FFXIII everything is going to be fine.Â

Brand loyalty is limited to the confines of forums like these. If brand loyalty was so widespread and powerful, the N64 would have been more successful.karicha9
Truth in these words. What we argue about here is very irrelevant to the rest of the world, which is dominated by casuals who think of gaming as only a diversion and fun. While we find gaming to be just as fun or more, hardcore gamers (I.E. the kind who post in System Wars) are looking for more than just playing, but serious discussion and generally hold themselves to a higher level of game quality in which they choose.Â
so far around 1% of last gen's ps2 base is buying the ps3.
so to answer the question: it doesn't look like hardly any ps2 owners are buying the ps3..

Nope, most consumers will not pay $500 for a consoleÂ

Fixed.
MS isn't holding a gun to your head forcing you to buy the most expensive SKU. You can buy the cheaper premium with the massive back catalogue of games.
People are more than willing to pay for gaming fees overtime with online. Look at WoW vs Guild Wars.
the bulk of ps2 owners bought the most popular that was also affordable. heck ppl are still buying it because of those 2 reasons. I don't see the ps3 as the most popular or is it affordable so i don't think it will get the bulk of the ps2 owners. they will get a wii if anything.

This is the million dollar question..........
Wherever they go, that console will be the winner. But it doesn't look like they're leaving PS2 anytime soon
280,000 NPD FIgure Last Month :shock:Â
That's why lifespan of a console is gonna be even more important this generation than ever beforeÂ

$480. Nobody is going to choose the HDMI less premium with insufficient hardrive space for $400 now. If people switch they have to spend $200 for online gaming fees over the years plus $480 so why not just spend $600 for something you really want and know that it has the games you want plus the longterm support ?Â
Â
Â
$200 is the most buy price. this gen would be over by the time the ps3 gets to that price.[QUOTE="DementedDragon"]Eventually, yes though I predict around 2/3's of the userbase, once the system comes down to a must-buy price.Ontain

Well the system won't be $600 forever, and just like the PS1 and PS2, i'm sure Sony will continue to keep the system around for 6-7 years. More than enough time to accumulate a substantial userbase; the system has the games (coming up) it's just the price is what's holding back sales.
Those have been my thoughts exactly. A person must have totally different reasons in buying a PS3 when compared to buying a PS2 because the PS3 has totally different selling and strong points. The features it has attracts a *much* smaller segment of the gaming world.the bulk of ps2 owners bought the most popular that was also affordable. heck ppl are still buying it because of those 2 reasons. I had a PS1 and PS2. Both were great systems and the PS2 was just amazing. I supported the PS3 and was eventually gonna get one but all I really wanted was MGS4 and the PS3 just had to many lows; price, controller, games, ect. So I got a 360, with GTA4, Mass Effect, Halo 3, and many other games coming out the 360 it looks to be the top dog gaming wise this gen.
And yeah, every person I know who had a PS2 ended up getting 360 instead of a PS3, so I'm pretty sure cases like these are everywhere.
