To trigger happy mods this isnt just about psn attacks, this does not fit under the sticky as it discussed other services such as amazon, xbox live as well

April 19 2011 Glados Goes online

Amazon Cloud services go down for over 24 hours causing multiple high profile websites to go under with many being gaming services

The entire PSN is shut down by SONY headquarters after alarms are raised of a security breach

Investigators determine an external attack was committed against PSN stealing personal information

Numouras Gaming communities such as NEOGAF claim that a XBOXlive network error unbanning all permabanned consoles

Microsoft declares xbox live is under attack from scammers trying to steal information, users are warned to be careful

Nah, these kind of attacks happen often in the commercial world, we are hearing about these because the commercial entities that are being attacked relate to gaming.

It will be remembered like that. Not everyone will research on what started the situation with Sony but will automatically assume that Sony are to blame as its there consoles. Tabloids dont care how they report things either as long as they sell there news!! Do you remember The Sun article which i put up several weeks back which was proven false? Weird thing is ive shown people other articles showing that it was utter BS but they still believe the sun.

the fact that psn..a free and sloppy online service was hacked will be an impact on people but in a few months when uncharted 3 hype train starts up again it will be forgotten

but. the fear of ANY online server crashing like this and having identities in control wont be...

basically people will be more fearful of attacks, but will eventually forget this attack....well hardcore gamers

Why would you call them trigger happy mods? You seem to be trying to force gamespot to talk about something that has already been talked about til death. They must have canned some of your lame topics for you to say the mods are trigger happy. Can you explain this in further detail about the MODs being trigger happy?

No its not there fault, but Sony should have given warnings as soon as they thought our accounts were at risk. Instead they wait six days to tell us and all it takes is one day for a hacker to get your personal information and credit card details. The fact of the matter is that Sony dropped the ball big time and if you try to defend Sony after all of this then it is clear that you are a 12 year old who doesn't get how serious this is because itsMom or Pops credit card at risk.

Sorry, but..

If you're on a network that gets hacked. You should be fully aware that you could be at risk. Sony's not your mommy. They shouldn't HAVE to tell you something like that. They haven't said everyone's at risk, anyway. They just suggested that everyone should change their passwords JUST IN CASE. Boo hoo. They got hacked and people got info stolen. It's not like this stuff doesn't happen almost everyday out of the year everywhere else.

Of course I'm 12, you're pretty wise my friend...

Having said that Sony put down the PSN as soon as they realized about the intrusion. After this point no hacker would've been able to get more users info. Whatever they got before the PSN was down is what they have right now, so even if it took Sony 6 days to realize CC info could've been compromised, there was no harm to it. Bad luck to those whose info was stole (if there was any) but there's no point on blaming sony for announcing this after 6 days.

Oh but I forgot I'm 12 y.o. and don't know much about it.... you big manly man probably know a good way to get that info even if the PSN is down, right?? You're sooooooooooo wise and smart that I think I wanna be just like you when I grow up.

Coolyfett why arent you speaking normally or abnormally!! whichever way you look at it lol. Problem is that competitive companies will throw anything around to get more sales. You think MS wont throw comments out soon enough saying "If you want to be safe online then buy a 360 and not the PS3 as you'll get hacked" and that kinda stuff. Tabloids also can affect the views of punters as it has been a big case here in the UK with every news channel reporting on this adding to fire against Sony. Then you have the consumer, Will he or wont he put his faith and money into products which are lacking in key areas?! Sony will be in business after this fiasco but in what shape is the bigger question but thats anyones guesse,

Sony asked for my info when I signed up so therefore they have to take care of it. Of course they should warn me that my account may be in danger.

I don't think there has been any proper damage to any CC accounts yet. So until then we can just assume that it's not as big as people are making it out to be.

It is their fault though. They had incredibly poor practices when it came to storing information, like that of credit cards. They skipped out on encryption where it was absolutely required. It could very well be that such attacks were tried against Nintendo or Microsoft, but we never found out, because their security was good enough to stop them. Good security is security you never hear about. This was a collosal failure on Sony's part. You are always supposed to prepare for the worst, its going to cost them SO much more now to fix all of this then it would have for them to have implemented everything correctly in the first place. As well they waited a full day to tell anyone.

I think it'll be remembered not just by the gaming community but as a business accountability lesson, companies like this (and it's not just limited to game companies) collect our private personal and financial data and Sony did a particularly poor job keeping it secure, so are they going to be held accountable for it, where we go from here I think will be remembered not just by gamers but by everybody, do we want legislation in place making businesses protect personal data, will people be looking for greater guarantees when it comes to who they disclose their personal information to... sure this whole lemming kicking hermits thing will be forgotten but the lesson from it will probably be around for a while, I mean 77 million peoples account info was compromised and Sony waited a week to tell people, how Sony is held accountable I think will shape how future business is doen
