Will the PS3 ever live up to legacy of the PS2? Or PS1?

I loved my PS2, used to play it every day and when sony announced the PS3 at E3 2005 i was looking forward to the "The Next PS2". The playstation 3 is a great system, with SOME phenominal games, but i still think the PS2 legacy crushes it. Although the PS3 has only bin out for a couple years, do you think it will be as legendairy as the PS2 was? The PS1 annihilated the N64. The PS2 ****kicked the Xbox, now will the PS3 pwn all?

Personally, i think it wont. The PS2 was a phenom in gaming, that brought console gaming from meh to a beast and the PS3 just wont live up to its legacy. The PS2 had TONS!!!!! of phenominal games, i remember it flooding electronic stores and every game i saw was a classic, great game. The PS3 dose have the the power, but i dont see it skyrocketing from "meh" to thee sytem in gaming (which ps2 n ps1 were).

So like i said, do you think it will live up to the PS1/PS2 legacy?

its no easy task to live up to the legacy that PS1/PS2 had... (keeping in mind PS2 can pretty much be still considered a current-gen console, since its still selling and getting games)

PS3 is struggling, but its a great console and its getting quality titles.... can't wait for LBP & Resistance2 :)

Wii has much better exclusives and it doesn't have a 14 year old controller. But yeah, overall it's probably worse

In terms of games, hardware, Sony being a media cross over giant, etc. Then yes it will surpass the PS1 and PS2

In terms of sales, I don;t think anay console will take that away from the PS1 and PS2. Not even the Wii.

meh, technology and things advance and I think the PS3 is gonna be around alot longer then people expect. Plus im having alot of fun with my PS3 atm more then I did my PS2 or PS1

It'll have quite the legacy, just not the sort that Sony had envisioned.

Yah but there in the gutter with money, the havent profitted from the PS3 and with a price drop now, i dont think it will happen. Like someone said, its much harder to develope for, the PS2 was pretty simple to lots of developers and games were on that, i HOPE the PS3 dose live up to the legacy, or atleast gets alot of good games cuz when i think of PS1, PS2, PS3 i think "meh" but when i think of PS1, PS2 i think "******* awesome!"

Agreed.

For the simple reason that Sony can't rely on 3rd party exclusives anymore.

The amount of 3rd party exclusive AA/AAA titles the PS2 had was insane.The PS3 will have a fraction of that amount.

Yes. The PS3 has the cell and blu ray and a 10 year life cycle and free online. It will surpass the PS2 and PS1.

Objectively, it's hard to say. Overall, it is a much better system than the PS2, based on the hardware quality and features (wireless internet, hard drive, wireless USB controllers, blu-ray). In the end, the quality of games will be the determining factor. I'd say it has potential. It had a slow start, mainly due to the 360's price and head start, and the early library of titles, and the extremely high price, but it is really starting to come around, at least in the court of public opinion, and isn't that what determines "legacy" in the end?

Now, my personal bias kicks in, and I have to say that it has already well surpassed the PS2 (noted that I'm probably in the minority). To me, the PS2 just seemed cheap compared to the XBox, and I loved the Xbox exclusives. The fact that I own a PS3 is saying something. Based on the PS2, I had absolutely zero intentions of buying a PS3. I disliked the PS2 that much. I also largely disliked the PS1. I have always liked Sony's products, but never liked their gaming consoles. The PS3, for me, is an awesome piece of machinery and I am all too glad to own it. It has a place of honor alongside my 360 and Wii.

You do realize that the PS2 sold 127 million units, right. The PS3 has well over 100 million still to go to catch the PS2, it will never happen. The PS2 is, was, and always will be the most dominant and successful console ever, period.

Actually, they have passed the 150million mark, according to Sony, and This Holiday season will be nice for the ol'PS2.

When you have a 100,000,000 over both of your competitors, you can throw your weight around and pretty much get any exclusive you want.

The PS3 will never be able to do that. It is and will remain a great console, but it wont reach PS2 status. I dont think PS2 status can be reached by anyone this gen.

The PS3 is a massive flop that is losing support every day. Do you really think that the failed blu-ray player is going to stick around?

Oh no, the hardware is poorly made!!!

At least it has more than one good exclusive unlike the failstation 3. Don't worry, there's plenty of downsized 360 ports for you to enjoy as well
