Sony has pledged that the PS3 will last 10 years, but will it?
My opinion? No. The technology will get so old 4 years by now that it will simply become like the PS2: a cheaper alternative to the PS4, or a cheap Blu-ray player.

I don't think there is room for a PS4 or Xbox 3 unless they think of some idea people will buy, If it's just gonna be another entertainment box, then we have quite some time ahead of us still.Koalakommander
There will be another box and it will sell. No earlier then 2010 for the new XBOX though.

Just whipping out another "Computer Entertainment Massive Win Machine Deluxe-in-a-box Center Station" would be a repeat of the same thing that happened this gen. While personally, I enjoy having a CEMWMDCS, I'll be disappointed if MS/Sony aim towards the Wii-style of gaming next time. Surprisingly, the Wii's momentum has not slowed one bit. It's kinda scary. :|

It will be supported by Sony for 10 years. Keep in mind, they still have support for the PS2. It does not mean they will not release another system sometime near the end of the PS3's 10 year life-span.Sony has pledged that the PS3 will last 10 years, but will it?

I think all 3 consoles will last 7-8 years, no point in rushing in a new console when all 3 are doing well. I don't expect the new consoles to come before Q4, 2012.Nintendo_Man
PS4 in 2012 but Microsoft will want another headstart most likely so 2011 for them.
No... it'll probably last 15 years.
Developers just touched the tip of the ice berg... with GT5 and GoW3 and KZ2 coming, the best days are still ahead of it.
The 360 hit its peak already... the PS3 will probably peak in a year or two then plateau for a long time.
Of course the PS3 will last 10 years, because Pioneer only a few days ago announced that they have released a PS3 compatible 400gb BLuray Disc. In theory they could make a game 8 times more realistic than MGS4(it used up 50GB) Also Pioneer are working on a 1TB disc now that is what i call INSANEG-T-A---M-A-D
Dude no dev is going to make game with 400gb of data. Stop dreaming.

You're probably right there but devs will make a 100-200gb game.[QUOTE="G-T-A---M-A-D"]Of course the PS3 will last 10 years, because Pioneer only a few days ago announced that they have released a PS3 compatible 400gb BLuray Disc. probably in 1995 you also thought that games wouldnt need 8+ GB of data but look what happened technology moved forward and games did too... you cannot be 100% sure that one day we wont be playing games which take over 200GB of data/storage..

Not yet. Remember when games used to fit on floppy disks? Or when we were amazed at the 32mbit SNES cartridges? A 6GB game was unthinkable back then.Sony has pledged that the PS3 will last 10 years, but will it?

That depends what you mean by lasting 10 years, do you mean until it's succesor gets released (PS4) or until thy actually stop manufacturing on the system? Cause bare in mind that the PS2 was released 8 years ago and is still going quite strong (or until they finally make PS3 models properly backward compatible again) and even the PS1 lasted a bit after the PS2's release and believe i heard somewhere that the last PS1 game got released in 2005 (10 years later).

I can see it aswell, Nintendo re-cycled their Powerglove idea for the Wii, and now their next game system will be a re-cycled idea from the Virtual Boy....

8 times more realistic than MGS4? More marketing fluff anyone? Your forgetting the aged hardware that has to be able to power this game that is 8 times more realistic than MGS4. With the lousy components under the PS3's hood, thats not happening.
....Well in light of the 16,000 job cuts Sony just announced, maybe they're trying to drop you a hint with the Platstation 3 lasting 10 years thing...Ilikemyname420Yes. All those cuts happened solely in Sony's gaming division.

All those cuts happened solely in Sony's gaming division. ...sigh...they also mentioned they were cutting back investment of new electronics....which would mean the next console. They are in a bad spot, and they probably aren't planning to blow millions on R&D on a new console anytime soon.
I believe so. It's happening now with PS2. It happened with PS1.
Few things that will be driving it are:
