As stated on Wiibreak.com many third party developers consider the Wii as something that will eventually fade away. Sure its fun for the first few hours, but after that what do you have ?

A controller that requires you to swing your arms like a lunatic instead of the classic gamepad and overall a console that isn't really all that great. The graphics and GPU engine is hardly an advancement from the gamecube and probably the main reason why its not being treated as a proper next gen console, its using old technology and the only thing really new about it is the controller.

Many complain that the PS3 is not worth the money, but look at how much your paying for year old technology when you buy the Wii and its poor selection of games (a bunch of mediocre tittles with hardly any must-have games)

Personally I think the Wii isn't a next gen console, and it will never be treated as one. Unless Nintendo puts some hard work into their next product I doubt many will even consider buying it. I mean, c'mon how many times can you play Mario?

Wii = next-gen.
And no matter how much you pathetic fanboys will try to claim otherwise, it just is.

Personally I'm having a blast with the console, and I think Sony has really screwed themselves over this generation.
PS3 is a complete failure compared to Wii right now.

considering it's older technology in a high tech industry and it's one of he only consoles thats never really took a significant leap forward commen knowledge and history would tell us that wii will fade but it very well migh continue to sell if it has alot of dev supports. however i will say this wii's life cycle will definetly be shorter than 360 or PS3

All the signs are there so yes but Nintendo knew this going in and will milk the consumer for all their worth then try a new gimmick.

The more things change the more they stay the same.

Sure in about 7 years ;)

Oh and I just got my Wii. I picked up Zelda and it doesn't require me to "swing my arms like a lunatic". It controls really, really well.

The only reason its next gen, is because it was released at the same time as the competitors. Hardware wise its still behind the original xbox.

As far as the life-cycle goes, im certain it will be shorter. Simply because 3party developers dont want to risk developing a game for a console that only serves to the casuals instead of all types of players like the 360 or PS3.

In short : Its only a next gen console because it was released the same time as the competition.

saying the wii isnt current gen is like saying the 360 is last gen. b/c of no motion sensing or wifi, and because of rrod, scratching discs, and b/c pcs are way ahead of consoles, to a pc a console is last gen b/c they vhad most if not all of the technology we currently see in consoles

Will the DS fade away? Many similar arguments could be made about the DS going up against the PSP, but yet the DS has compleately dominated. What is the Wii doing? The exact same thing in it's weight class: Consoles.

It will fade away like most other consoles will fade away: With the introduction of the next wave of consoles.

How can u compare the DS to the Wii? The competition it's facing on the handheld market is non existant (PSP) and there's loads of good games available right here right now. The only thing they have in common is that they both are overpriced.

I find it hard to believe it'll fade away solely because Nintendo can afford to sell it cheaper as the profit margin is pretty healthy.

Actually, it are cows that are still bragging about PS2 sales, even now.
I enjoyed the games on my Xbox and GameCube a lot more then on my PS2, does that mean the PS2 didn'twon last gen?

Sales determine if a console wins, it's always been like that.
More sales = more developers producing games for that console.
So please go and damage control somewhere else.

I can somehow agree with this though.
The Wii is some kind of experiment and a small taste of what Nintendo is going to give us in the future.
Still, as it is now you can't say it won't last long at all. I do believe it will have a slightly shorter lifespan then the 360 and PS3.

It might, who knows? But eventually it will fade away... every console does. Nonetheless, the console is receiving3rd party games that I would never have expected on a console like the gamecube.

One of the reasons of me liking the Wii is that for the time being it has proved us all wrong... at least in a way and it actually shows just how young the video game industry really is and the many roads it can take to grow or expand the market.

I think that most gamers have to get off there high horses and or lower their gaming "standards" for the industry to grow indiversified directions and actually use theirbrain to actuallyrealize that in a business, different markets and or strategiescan coexist with each other, without becoming a nuisance to a specific group. After knowing people that have never gamed in their lives (and I would never expect them to) to touch a game on the Wii or games like DDR, singstar or Guitar Hero it all becomes obvious.

So in a way the Wii might fade away, but whatis behind it, what is pushing it may actually hold the industry longer than most of you would have liked. As for the controler I'm all for it, I really can't imagine 4 generations from now having to still hold a freaking classic gamepad in my hand.

There is nothing wrong in reaching the next level ofinteraction in games and the Wii is starting that, the graphics went from 2d to 3d and I see nothing wrong in the evolution of a tech that takes you away from a classic gamepadto actually make you interact with a 3d world in ways that may simulate the interaction on our own. Do I think this is the real evolution of control of2d to 3d that graphics have already went through? Yes I do.From where I'm coming from, in this specific road I see a path that leads nowhere but up.

Yeah, I think that playing games for the past 22-23 years with astandard controller has been so much fun compared to using the wii remote where you actually swing and thrust and whip and twist. yeah, the wii remote hasnt really improved anything, but has made things more boring....Yeah, good point....

And the games not being that much better than the GC, sure, since it has only been out for 11 months now, N and the other devs have bucked the console trend of takign atleast 2-3 years to get much or most of the graphicla potential and shoudl be able to prodice stellar games in just 11 months...Another good point...Shame on N for not doing better, and shame on N for not thinking that the standard controller is just the way to go.

I think it's been about six months - more to come over the next six months as the the purchasers continue to find their new Wii system collecting dust wasn't worth the 400.00 ( controllers for multi play ) admission fee.

Well that's funny, becuse we already know (specs wise) that the Wii is indeed more powerful then the original X-Box, so where do you get your information? And if your saying it's graphics are worse, then you are arguing with the wrong people, because we all know that graphics do NOT determine a "generation" of gaming. Just lookup the definition of the word generation and you will see what I'm talking about. it's completely determined by release time, and only release time.

Secondly, you say the Wii ONLY servers casuals? really? Then who the heck are they making SMG. SSBB, Fire Emblem, Mario Kart, Zack & Wiki, the new Tales Game, Trauma Center, and Batillion Wars 2 for? Sure as heck not for casuals. If you can show me the casual that loved either of the past Fire Emblem games, or Tales of Symphonia I will be amazed.

And as for those that keep saying it's going to fade away, you do realize that the big N can STILL drop it's prices if sales start to slide (which they haven't) and probably still make profit on the system. Fact is, that as long as development costs for the Wii are much cheaper then those of the 360 and PS3, the Wii will continue to get games. Plus, the huge customer base doesn't hurt at all either.

I don't see any problem in asking if the Wii will fade away... but I hate it when people say you have to swing your arms like a lunatic playing only minigames. What if someone said, "You have to twiddle your thumbs all day playing only shooters on 360?" Both are generalizations, and show little knowledge of the console in question.

I'm not going to play sales. I'm just going to say that Wii will not go the way of the Dreamcast anytime soon.

In short : Its only a next gen console because it was released the same time as the competition.

The gamecube was on par with the original xbox. The Wii is superior to both. In a interview with Ubisoft, they were asked what is the Wii hardware like and they responded:

"Although i cannot give you exact numbers at this time i can give you a rough idea about the power of the machine. I would compare the graphics chip to somewhere inbetween the ATI Radeon X1400 and the Radeon X1600, and the CPU to between the AthlonXP 2400+ and the AthlonXP 3000+."

"I cannot say how much memory the Wii has, but its running at 650mhz."

Games like Rogue Squadron 3 and Resident Evil 4 shows that the gamecube was on par with the original Xbox. Comparing both of them is like comparing painter to photoshop, it was a matter of how effective the developer was at programming on them. If the Wii is 2x-3x a Gamecube then its that much more powerful than the original Xbox as well.

No, it's not going to fade away. It is here to stay. It resonates extremely well with casual and non-gamers, and that is a huge market. It's also the most family-friendly console of the three. It's not going anywhere because it's targeting a totally different market segment, a segment that Sony and Microsoft could never in their wildest dreams hope to capture.

Sony and Microsoft are battling it out for the traditional market; Nintendo is venturing into new ones. Therein lies the big difference.

Nah, simply put, the Wii is as viable a console as the 360 and PS3. It's not going to fade away like people think. Maybe at the end of this gen it'll start to fade away, but not before then.

No, I don't think the Wii will fade away.

While both PS3 and XBOX 360 have the capability to grow the gaming industry and market by migrating the gamers from the last gen platform (PC, XBOX, PS2, GameCube, etc) to the new gen platform, their capability to create new gamers is limited, I think, because these consoles and the games are expensive and not suitable for all.

And that's where Wii comes in... the Wii has the capability to grow the market in certain sector. Wii is a great 1st console for amateurs and kids who are new to gaming, who may subsequently adopt XBOX 360 or PS3 as their next console. Many parents may be reluctant to buy PS3 or XBOX 360 for their 10 year old, and may settle for Wii. Wii is not trying to compete with PS3 or XBOX 360.

Lol, you dont swing your arms like a lunatic. You hold it in your lap and slightly move it while still having very good controll.

The graphics and GPU engine is hardly an advancement from the gamecube and probably the main reason why its not being treated as a proper next gen console, its using old technology and the only thing really new about it is the controller.

loky4000

Yes. Motion-sensors are VERY,VERY old technology. silly nintendo.

Many complain that the PS3 is not worth the money, but look at how much your paying for year old technology when you buy the Wii and its poor selection of games (a bunch of mediocre tittles with hardly any must-have games)

loky4000

lol. that is my new favorite word.

Poor selection of games? We might not have a brilliant library yet, but wait untill early '08 (SMG, Brawl, SC: Legends, FE: GoD) And now we have MP3, Paper Mario, and Wario Ware too hold us off.

"As stated on Wiibreak.com many third party developers consider the Wii as something that will eventually fade away. Sure its fun for the first few hours, but after that what do you have ? "

Every console will eventually fade away.

"A controller that requires you to swing your arms like a lunatic instead of the classic gamepad and overall a console that isn't really all that great."

Of all the games I've played on my Wii, not one has required me to "wave my arms around like a lunatic". But if I wanted last-gen controls (no waggle), I could just go buy a PS2, XBOX, or GCN. Why even buy a current console?

The only thing I'm not liking about WII right now is how they are milking Mario.

I mean how can a Italian plumber with the special skill of jumping over mushrooms be so versatile. Props for him though.

It's an easy comparasion. The PSP had the superior hardware, the superior brand-name support, riding on the success of the PS2, and was supposed to destroy Nintendo in the handheld market. Rewind the clock back to when the DS was just being launched and it was being laughed at much how the Wii is getting laughed at. Fast-forward to todayand the DS is ahead of the PSP by a 2 : 1 ratio. The weaker technology of the DS has certainly not caused it to be short-lived at all, nor did the gimmick touch-screen cause it a preamature death. A lot of similar things are happening with the Wii, perhaps not exactly the same, but many of the same elements.

Right now the Wii, 360, and PS3 stand at 2.3 : 2.3 : 1 ratio, with the Wii just increasing the lead it has. It's only been a year, and shows no signs of slowing down or fading away anytime soon. The hardware certainly isn't slowing the Wii down, and if the poor quality of games the Wii has in comparasion with the other consoles is any indication, then the success of the Wii lies elsewhere doesn't it? It's ease of use, it's that simple. K.I.S.S. Keep it simple stupid. The DS touch screen makes things simple. The Wiimote makes things simple. Simple sells.

How can u compare the DS to the Wii? The competition it's facing on the handheld market is non existant (PSP) and there's loads of good games available right here right now. The only thing they have in common is that they both are overpriced.

[QUOTE="RahnAetas"]

Will the DS fade away? Many similar arguments could be made about the DS going up against the PSP, but yet the DS has compleately dominated. What is the Wii doing? The exact same thing in it's weight class: Consoles.

It will fade away like most other consoles will fade away: With the introduction of the next wave of consoles.

no matter how much you want it to happen the Wii will never fade away, it`s already sold more then the Dreamcast did and just because the graphics aren't as good as the ps3 or 360 doesn't mean that it will just "fade away". We all thought the DS was just a fad and now it has sold over 50 million units world wide while the PSP has barley sold half of that.
