Rightfully so. By the time it lands it just doesn't make sense to include the function.

no, the Wii uses a proprietary format that's basically just like a DVD but not, so they'd don't have to pay royalties for the disc drive and such, just like with the Wii U they'll basically have a the equivalent of a blu-ray drive and the games will be on basically br-discs but it won't play blu-ray movies

Well, except for the licensing fees required, and the fact that it wears out the disc-reader faster than just playing games would, both of which are pretty valid excuses.

Both the Wii and the 3DS can play movies since they both support Netflix. There is a good chance the Wii U will also support Netflix as well.

So, that means there are two Nintendo platforms that support Movies and its likely a third will be added once the Wii U arrives.

Outside of having an all in one media device that everyone seems to like? There's the whole competition offering it angle or the fact iwata has gone on record saying Wii u will be expensive. As a consumer I want Nintendo to deliver tons of features at a great price.

and as a consumer id much prefer ninty to spend every last cent of R&D and manufacturing on making the wiiu the very best gaming machine they can for the price. the very last thing i want is a disaster of a machine like a PS3...a compromised gaming machine and a dreadful media center. no thanks. tick box features are just pointless bloat. of course in this age of connected devices ninty can have their cake and eat it. deliver a gaming machine out of the box and have people pay for the extra bloat they want.

I agree the all in one is a nice thing. But really by the time the Wii came out who did not already own a DVD player. I am sure Nintendo did not lose many sales due to the lack of a DVD player. Now they might have lost sales due to the lack of a Blu Ray player which many people picked up a PS3 for. Then again that would have made the Wii cost more which in turn would have lost them sales.

If by movies, you mean DVD's? No. Nintendo is a GAME company that wants to MAINLY focus on GAMES. Hence the term a GAME CONSOLE! Why does a console need something like that in order to be good?

So you want another underpowered device like wii and 3ds? Because nintendo does not partake in the graphics arms race anymore. They're about maximizing profits by selling dated tech at a premium and not investing into their online space. Single touch resistive touchscreens on the wii-u pad anyone? They're also slow when it comes to investing into their online infrastructure. No user accounts for 3ds(ties everything to the device it self) and just now getting messaging( welcome to 2005 nintendo).

I still can't even purchase retail titles in the e shop and god forbid if i want to demo a game before buying. Netflix is fine but how about new titles? MS and Sony are both offering movie rental and music services yet once again you have nintendo keeping all of that wii money instead of investing. With all the money they're not spending you would think a steady stream of software would release for wii and 3ds yet it was a barren wasteland this year.

lol. Why would I need a DVD player in a console? I don't even use the blu-ray player in my PS3, so I don't think i'll be using a DVD player in the Wii U. It's just one of those unnecessary accessories which basically add nothing of value. I have a multi-media hub anyway, it's called a PC.

The Wii can play movies without modifications from an SD card on the Photo channel, they just have to be converted to the right format first.

I doubt it does, but I really don't care. The last DVDs I bought were from my 2010 San Francisco Giants World Series box set, and even before that I had moved on to Netflix.

They need features that have been offered in consoles for 10 years now if nintendo is serious about selling wii-u at a premium price point This includes dvd and blu-ray playback.

They're using 25GB high capacity discs. Most likely a similar situation as wii's DVDs.

Nintendo stated that it is using 25GB discs which basically implies that it's bluray which also means it will also have dual layer support aswell.

besides. one key note to mention nintendo has never really focused on playing video disks outside of gaming. the past 3 gens when it was popular, nintendo has skipped out, now that its losing steam i highly doubt that they would change their minds at this point. it woud seem pointless. adding a feature into their console that would cost more money but not many people really want.
