I personally don't think so. We've seen a few 10s since its release but how many of those 10s are still remembered as fondly as OoT was? Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, for instance, is entirely forgotten. Every time a 'Best game ever' thread is brought up, often at least a 40% of the responses will have OoT as number 1.

When OoT was released, it might have had haters (e.g. people who solely owned PSX's) but those who actually played the game loved it. It was exceedingly rare that you'd find a "legitimate" hater who had played the game and disliked it, or thought it was undeserving of a 10. Look at recent 10s like MGS4 and GTA4; many people (including myself) think that both games are extremely overrated. Ten years down the line, will anybody care about these two games? People probably will about MGS4 seeings as its part of quite an epic tale, but GTA4 will most likely be remembered as "just another GTA game." No disrespect to it, it's a great game, but many GTAs will follow and it will just be an outdated iteration of the franchise. Contrast this with OoT which, despite being released before many other Zelda games, is STILL remembered as the best and an absolute c l a s s i c. More than ten years down the line, and I still feel like picking it up and playing it. This will never happen with a game like GTA4 and most other 10 games on GS (although might occur with MGS4).

It's my favourite game of all time hands down. It was one of only two games (along side Zelda - Link's Awakening) where I actually felt sad after beating it, knowing that the tale had come to an end. Zelda OoT is epic and is highly unlikely to ever be beaten. Of course, as a gamer, I hope it is so that I can enjoy another game even more.

Remember too, that Nostalgia plays a powerful role in our decision making regarding these cIassics.

----------

It's also near impossible for games today to get 10's as there are far more reviewers, and taste has opened up a lot. Back then, 12 reviews was a lot, today 50-100 reviews is a lot. You factor in that many reviews, you are bound to get the occasional 8's or lower, which knocks the overall score.

It was a great game, but my favorite Zelda was Link to the Past. I love that game, They even ported it years later to the GBA, but I'm talking SNES oldschool.:P

Honestly, it's not nostalgia I'm talking about here. I'm talking more so about the experience I had when I was actually playing through the game. Like I said, there were only two games that ever made me sad after beating them because I was actually upset they were over.

As good? I'm sure there are games better. As revolutionary and as loved and before its time? Nah probably not. But there shouldn't be any mistake, I'm sure there are games as good as if not better than OoT regardless of what Zelda fanboys will tell you.

Its not that games are not as good as Ocarina of Time. Its just that the atmostphere and play style and mainly for me the music and audio were so unique, no good great or even amazing game has been able to replicate that kind of memory. There have been games that are as good and better, but rarely any that are so memorable.

Well seeing as to me Gears of War 1 is the best game I have ever played and enjoyed I will go with that. I also think CoD 2 and the Halo series is better than any Zelda game. So I guess so.

Maybe. After the new ViDoc for Halo: Reach it looks like it could be one of the greatest games ever, but its still way too early to tell. Other than that I don't think there will be. Games are getting more and more complicated and large which is going to make it harder for designers to make a really good game because there will be sooo much to work on. OoT had the perfect balance between large game and simplicity. Now because everything is so much bigger its too hard to reach that balance. Anyone could have played OoT but now there are no games that are for everyone.

Part of OoT's appeal is in it's timing: at a time when 3D was beginning to emerge on consoles, it came forth and revolutionized 3D adventure gaming. No innovation of that level has taken place in many years. When we have another technological leap, then you will see games that will match OoT in terms of timeless quality.

On that note, innovations have taken place in other genres, especially on the PC. Half-Life, Starcraft, and even WoW (to an extent), have made enormous waves in gaming on that platform. Starcraft is still being played today, and WoW is a PC game for the masses to the scale of which we have never seen before.

Uncharted 2 and Super Mario Galaxy came really damn close from this gen, and Halo: CE is right up there with it, IMO. Bad Company 2, God of War 3, Halo: Reach, and Zelda Wii are the next contenders for "best game ever". The Halo: Reach ViDoc is orgasmic to watch, Zelda Wii is freaking Zelda, Bad Company 2 has the best demo of all time (with just one map too), and God of War 3 is like the other God of War's, but imroved and hella' prettier. I haven't played ME2 either, but it could certainly be as good as OOT.

To me there have been many games released since OoT that have given me that same "wow" factor. Final Fantasy X, Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime, Battlefield 2, Halo, No More Heroes, Morrowind, Civilization III, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare-to name a few.

^ this

and not only did it revolutionize graphics, it revolutionized gameplay, audio, storytelling, and puzzle design... as well as giving us a vast 3D world with which the likes that we have never seen... It gave us Z targeting (lock on targeting) which was later a standard in video games... the gameplay is still pin point accurate, and still, even to this day holds up very well. The story was probably the best and most classic in all of video games, sure this is just an opinion, but who could deny the classical appeal of saving the world from an evil ruler and rescuing the princess? Puzzle design... aka dungeon design, at the time this was one of the most revolutionary aspects of OOT. people had never seen it before, solving multi level puzzles in huge 3D dungeons... take it from me, it was mind blowing. the audio was one of MY personal favorites about this game.... what else can i say about the audio other than listen to it....

OOT: the best game ever... yes

Ocarina of Time was amazing for its time no doubt. However, I've been getting a little bored with it in recent years. I sincerely hope that The Legend of Zelda Wii rekindles my love for this franchise and manages to top every Zelda game created both in terms of polish and in innovation.

What you just described is nostalgia. You are having fond memories about the experience you had. When replayed, you remember that experience and that fuels your love. But what makes OoT actually good, is if someone today can pick it up; after never playing it, and love it. I can't see that happening with OoT, but I can with other games.

I would like to know what your standards are for having a game as good or better than OoT.

Would it have to be the same genre as OoT and share the same elements as the game, or does it have to completely impress you overall? Does the art design have to be a certain style? Does the story have to be simple or complex? Do the music and songs have to be both original and extraordinary? Does it have to last X hours? Should it be nothing like OoT, but still hold the same first impression as OoT did?

I honestly feel that OoT had a "WOW" impression because of the time it was released. It's a solid game, but what game could share the same elements as OoT and not be called a complete rip-off at the same time?

I could say that there are better games than OoT, but if it is your favorite game then no amount of facts will challenge your preference.

I've gone through Majora's Mask a couple more times than I have OoT, in fact right now I'm on my fifth or sixth playthrough. I acknowledge that for its time OoT was revolutionary, though, and Majora's Mask, although more fun for me, was pretty much a direct sequel that didn't change much in terms of the 3D formula.

I dunno. Personally, OoT is my favorite game, to this day. I beat that thing 16 times, I kid you not.

There are a lot of games that are almost as good, though.

As for will something top it on Gamerankings? Unlikely.

KSU-Wildcat

Not just you. I didn't play Ocarina of Time until after a few others, so that probably factors into my decision. (Link's Awakening, Oracle of Time/Seasons, Wind Waker, but I suppose the 2D ones don't really count since they're quite a different experience) It's definitely good, but there are plenty of games that surpass it.

You know, this post brings up an interesting question about people's expectations of gaming: why do people always expect games to push the genre envelope? Am I the only game who can be happy with "more of the same" as long as its polished and well-executed? If it was a requisite that every game that is to be released pushed its genre's envelope, there would be two or three games released each year and we wouldn't have most of the games that we love so dearly.

Trust me, I don't. I'm a fan of FPS :P I kid, I kid I certainly don't care if the game doesn't push the genre as long as its hella fun, and for me, Majora's Mask was just that: FUN. And overall, that's what a video game needs to be in order to be good. It can revolutionize the industry or do something extremely innovative yes but that's mostly an "extra" if you will, and I think that's what most gamers forget Although I did notice MM has better graphics than OoT and is more refined and overall an improvement in gameplay, yet it's just that for a game to be as good as OoT it has to arguably be as groundbreaking as the game was in it's time

OOT is highly overrated. It is a great game, but it isn't the best game ever made. It isn't even the best Zelda game to me.

Personally,I never understood what´s the big deal about that game.It was an average experience to me and I was quite surprised to see all the praise around it.

Maybe everyone else is seeing something that I can´t?

Not the best game ever,no. Maybe the most overrated, yes?

I love OOT.... but people need to realize that by todays standards its not that amazing.... at the time, it was "da beez knees" (yes I just typed that)

but since, there have been plenty of games that came out that are as good/better than OOT. Are those games as amazing as OOT in their respective time? Maybe not.... but comparing the games directly, they easily beat out OOT.

Agreed. The game was fun but nothing amazing for me. Though I also wouldn't call it the most overrated.

That title goes to HL2.

Well i played zelda twlight princess not too long ago and thought it is a worthy successor to OOT,but to be honest it help a whole lot just like OOT,almost like a remake,it shares so many similarities with OOT id label it as the OOT for the GC/WII.Enjoyed all 50 hours i put into the game, although i got to admit Okami is better on the wii.

I already felt that Majora's Mask surpassed it in several ways. Original and well executed design, dark and mature tone, and more variety. So to answer your question, yes.

Not the same impact or wow factor. But better games yes.

Remember too, that Nostalgia plays a powerful role in our decision making regarding these cIassics.

Honestly, it's not nostalgia I'm talking about here. I'm talking more so about the experience I had when I was actually playing through the game. Like I said, there were only two games that ever made me sad after beating them because I was actually upset they were over.

What you just described is nostalgia. You are having fond memories about the experience you had. When replayed, you remember that experience and that fuels your love. But what makes OoT actually good, is if someone today can pick it up; after never playing it, and love it. I can't see that happening with OoT, but I can with other games.

It's not nostalgia. I'm not talking about how I feel when I play the game now, I'm talking about how I specifically felt when I was actually playing it back in '99. Nostalgia may distort these kind of memories, but I know for a fact that when I had I reached the end and the credits were rolling, I had such a strong feeling of melancholy then and there - only felt before OoT when I had completed Link's Awakening for the Gameboy. These are the only two games that hold this claim from me.
