I love violence in video games, movies, books, any kind of entertainment. I can watch a kung foo movie with no plot, just cause the fighting is great. I like video games for the same escapism that most people play for. There has been a couple times, however, that the violence, for a brief second, became too much.

The most lingering occurrence of this was playing Gears of War online. i was running through a crowded, tight area and was killed by a shotgun. Lots of other people around me died from the same shotgun. i was around the first to get killed so the camera did the thing were it stayed locked on my body for a second. in this view, i saw my own body be blown to pieces, along with many other bodies being ripped apart (as in chunks) in a big bloody mess, followed by the guy running through it all, scattering the pieces as he went. watching this i got this awkward feeling. i felt a little disgusted with the scene. it felt almost perverted.

It reminds of the feeling i got watching the horrible Rob Zombie movie House of a Thousand Corpses. It felt like an extremely immature version of extreme violence. I'm not saying that extreme violence can't be humorous (GTA); it just felt demented.

I loved playing Gears of War- don't think i'm saying the game is immature (or the guy who killed me for that matter). it just didn't rest easy with me.

has anyone else here felt that before? i guess its a good thing i'm not completely desensitized to violence.

Nope but I know some people who think the videos of NG2 are a little.....sick.

But Geow never.

Gore never bothers mostly because I grew up with it. My parents introduced blood and gore b4 any other kind of mature content mostly because they didn't want me to be squeamish.

Yes. When they get to reality levels where you see it as you might see in a movie, you know.. :|

I know what you mean...Gears of War especially gives me that feeling from time to time because there really is no humor behind it. Games like RE4 can be funny, but it can get too extreme. Think of it as like in ten years if full on pornographic sex scenes were in games for no reason. It follows that trend.

yes, with animations gettign more realistic there will come a time where it will be too much for most. there are allready alot of prople that think Manhunt is a step too far. Gore doesn't matter. it's the believability of pain or agony.

If you ask me, there ISN'T ENOUGH violence in video games. We need to see more genital-mutilation, more torture minigames, even gorier swaths of people ran over by cars, more forensic investigations for seamen in mutilated corpses, nastier beatings of women, more extreme blood-gargling screams of people being stabbed, more visceral and detailed organ removal, more walls fully painted with the chunky entrails of human beings, child pedestrians in Grand Theft Auto, crispier electrocutions, and a kitchen sink dropped on someone's head for good measure. And I think those are essential to give gaming a wider appeal. :)

Video games: The Coliseum of the 21st century.

It's the only place where human beings can express the darkest, most brutal sides of their nature nowadays.

I'm pretty much desensitized to almost all kinds of violence and I like to see in it video games. The only type of violence I don't want to see in video games (or anywhere else) is rape besides that all other kinds are welcome.

If it gets to the point of bones shattering and internal organs splattering, that would probably be too extreme.

I'm a fairly desensitized person (although I'm not sure "desensitized" is the right word) so I don't think I'll ever have problems, but sooner or later graphics will hit the point where the majority of people probably won't be able to handle extreme gore. It's one thing to watch a gore-porn movie, but to actually be in control will not only be disturbing physically, but mentally as well.

the thing about realism is that movies like the new Rambo don't have that effect on me (best action ever imo), yet the gore in that is more intense and actually real looking then most movies i've seen. it's all in the way its presented psychologically. i think it also has to do with how ingrossed you are at the time. if it never connects with real-life, it doesn't matter how much gore there is; you fully understand that its fake. at the same time though, this feeling also reminds me of what i might experience if they had kid pedestrians in gta. there is a line on what is fun, and what is shameful.

Haha Manhunt 2 didn't feature most of that and it wasn't released in it's original form. His dream of the most brutal game ever won't be coming anytime soon if ever.

one thing i can't stand, is the videos of real life violence. the terrorists videos showing people being torn apart by trucks, or the those suicide tapes. i have friends that have watched those and are ashamed. i could never watch it.

the things that i could never watch is kid violence. nothing, no matter if it was approached with the maturity of Saving Private Ryan could i play a game were you kill kids.

I feel that way man. I've started realizing... when GTA will look really, really real - I dont think I'll enjoy it much anymore. I could be wrong, but movies like Hostel and the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel really turned me off with all thier "gore for shock". It's not entertainment, it's just violence for shock, and it's disgusting.

I just think once the game doesnt look like a game anymore, the violence will be too much to watch.

haha great topic i just did a 10 page research paper on video game violence...and.... Its actully good for kids to play video games after a 5 year study from two doctors from havard med. they said its better for kids to play video games it actully keeps them out of trouble. Video game playing in the teen community has been going up and teen crime has drouped. the study stated its better for kids to play video games and gives them cofidance in real life and makes friendships. it also lets them screw up in a video game and not make bad mistakes in rl. the book is call "Grand theft childhood"

Last sentence is so true, it's not that the person just had his guts cut out, it's the fact he is clutching his stomach, writhing in agony and screaming that is disturbing me.

Violence in general is wrong obviously but rape is the only type of violence I have a problem with in video games. Thats just my view on it you don't have to agree.

I actually want more dismemberments or amputations with the target still being alive and fighting back. Like if you shoot someones arm off he might have more difficulty shooting and would faint from blood loss in a minute or so.

I wouldn't mind if they get more gory. I'm used to gory games now. But just like someone else said, I wouldn't want to see someone being raped in a game. That just crosses the line.

But playing too much violent video games at the same time will make me insane.

Well you could tell the where they used the CG for the killing in Rambo but I think the MG bit where he's blowing off poeples legs was pretty realistic, although bodies are not carried on by bullets, they usually just slink down. I know one guy doing all that in that fashion is ridiculous but there have been real solidiers with the type of kill ratio Rambo has.

What was unsettling though was my relatives live in a village abit like that(more developed though, but not much)in the north of Thailand pretty close the the Burmese border and since they used thai extras it felt creepy to me watching that village get obliterated.

when it gets over the top then yeah, but realistic gore is good, especially in war games cuz you see what they went through.

cool that you did a research paper on it. just to clear up if some of you got this impression- i do not advocate additional censorship of video games.

oh and to referring to rambo being realistic, i generally meant the style of gore on display. then again, i haven't ever actually seen someone ripped apart by a 50 cal in real life so i guess i can't be too sure.

i myself think violence is useful to convey a message ( best example i could think of would be Saving Private Ryan), but i also like a good action movie- even if it isn't meaningful.

i understand if you don't find enjoyment in playing violent video games, but within the confines of fantasy, it isn't shameful to enjoy violent media (including games). I myself am a proud Christian. I am not overly violent in my life, yet i enjoy fantasies that are violent. honestly, i don't have a reasoning for why,but i do. Speaking of how my Christian walk comes into this- i do not believe that it is wrong to indulge in fantasy. Entertainment is what it is. Not to replace Godly joy, but to enjoy my leisure time when I'm not busy.

I don't ever think violence in video games can reach the level found in movies only because the esrb will just slap an ao rating on it forceing the dev to tone it down. Personally violence doesnt affect me, and in some games its completly welcomed(NG,Condemned,Gow). Condemned 2 has some pretty brutal stuff but it didnt bother me and just added to the atmosphere.

I agree with you, though I have not played Manhunt I think it falls in the same vein. I know I too did not like House of a 1000 corpses, seemed he tried to make a stupid version of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Personally I feel that's the problem with the Jackass movies, they really are not funny you just watch to wince at how they really are Jackasses.

i want violence in a realistic game to be ultra realistic.

I'm talking simulated organ, bone, tissue and blood physics.:D

I'm serious btw.

I'm ok with violence as long as it compliments the gameplay. Violence for violence's sake is not necessary.

Yes I think it could easily get too intense for most people if everything looked real. One positive thing to come out of it could be developers feeling the need to come up with new ideas for games. You would still have games where enemies have to be killed, but maybe not as much focus on close and personal killings.

I don't ever think violence in video games can reach the level found in movies only because the esrb will just slap an ao rating on it forceing the dev to tone it down. Personally violence doesnt affect me, and in some games its completly welcomed(NG,Condemned,Gow). Condemned 2 has some pretty brutal stuff but it didnt bother me and just added to the atmosphere.Lemmywinks_360
We can't rally blame the ESRB for doing that(not saying you are), because what if some kid gets there hands on that?

for me, the point where video game violence will reach the point of "too instense" is when we achieve total photo-realism with full body VR immersion with realistic weapon feedback and the ability to actually feel when you touch something, and it all needs to be extremely convincing. why? this is the point where you can no longer tell reality from virtual reality.

It already has been. The unrated version of Manhunt 2 was too violent for an M rating so it had to be tuned down. I heard that you were able to put puppies in microwaves and you could castrate a man with pliers. Stuff like that crosses the line, imo.

In a sense, gaming is how a lot of people express their darkest most brutal desires and thoughts. I mean let's be honest, human beings are pathetically bloodthirsty creatures. Despite that though, I still think that there will come a time when it becomes too much. I don't think a person being chainsawed to bits is horrific, but that's because it's fictional and rather comical. It's when gaming becomes so realistic that the deaths look real and the gore becomes lifelike that I believe it will become a real issue.
