Last generation, on Xbox 360, we had a lot of quality strategy games, be it exclusive - Halo Wars, Viva Pinata 1 & 2 (actually only the sequel managed to end up being exclusive) - or games shared with PC like Battlestations Midway and Pacific, Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth, Tropico series and several others. This gen, so far, there has been almost none, apart from Zoo Tycoon, which wasn't a major release. There is Screamride in the making, made by the devs of the Tycoon and Elite series, but it's a hybrid of a Tycoon game with an unusual spin, but also it isn't a major release.

Now, Phil Spencer has said numerous times that he'd love to have a sequel to Halo Wars and that there hasn't been any proper strategy games on the Xbone but the potential is there.

Personally, an RTS title is what I'd want the most now, and I really don't mind playing RTS games on consoles, I've greatly enjoyed Halo Wars, I've also quite liked Command and Conquer games. With Kinect (although not mandatory anymore), I think they could really work. I think a hybrid of a streamlined strategy and an action game just like Battlestations games could easily translate into a successful console strategy game. Either that or an improved Halo Wars formula.

What do you think about the future of the genre on consoles?

I just don't think RTS convert to consoles very well. The controls almost be for a mouse and keyboard.

I would love to see more RTS games on my ONE. Of course Halo Wars 2 and another Command & Conquer. I would also love to see Stronghold: Crusader or the next installment of that series too.

I never played a RTS that controled any good on a consol, you need a mouse and a keyboard to make those type of game any enjoyable. But I think the Nintendo Wii U controler would be interesting in this case. You could have some of the menu on the controler screen and just touch what you want to make, which would make it rater interesting or you could have your troops controler there.

Console RTS games are a joke. They are either terrible or on training wheels and hugely simplified. So no you won't get a real RTS on consoles.

People who says RTS on consoles is a joke never play Halo Wars. HW was done right for a RTS on Xbox 360 and I got to say, it did Well and that series has what it takes to be a future RTS on consoles.

People who think Halo Wars is a good RTS have never played a real RTS game in their life. Halo Wars is the epitome of "RTS on training wheels".

Don't think so . They may get Halo RTS or some new kind of genre like "Action RTS" and stuff but not traditional RTS like Total War or Starcraft etc .

They might. But I hope they never will.

RTS controls and micromanaging aren't possible with a controller.

The thing is, console =!= controller. Both consoles can support keyboard and mouse controlls if MS/Sony allow it.

Problem is, MS/Sony don't want to break the imagine of relaxed, casual living room controller gaming. Ense the lack of K/M support in multiplatform games, much less for exclusives

Couple of issues. First basically 100% of real-time strategy fans own PCs as that's where the vast majority of strategy games have existed throughout history. At this point a strategy game on the console would just be opening up to a new audience as the market exists solely on the PC. Games like RUSE, Tom Clancy's End War, Battle For Middle Earth 1 and 2, and Halo Wars did little to persuade people to play RTSs on the console as all but one of those was also on the PC and that brings me to my next point.

Current RTS formula does not work well with a controller. RTSs are all about micromanagment and the controller lacks the ability to quickly and efficiently select and sort through groups of units. RUSE and Tom Clancy's End War addressed this with various control schemes, dynamic UI elements depending on zoom level, and even working voice controls. However the experiences ended up still feeling clunky on the consoles. The games themselves were also not the greatest which didn't help.

Halo Wars worked well on a console because it was exclusive on a console. However the gameplay itself suffered. Due to the poor grouping controls, the balance came down to amassing groups of higher level soldiers and just charging forward. That's how I beat the campaign. I actually think their controls worked pretty well once you got used to them and they could have implemented a better grouping system if they would have gotten smarter with context sensitive UI commands. The RTS itself was just bland. This could have been due to the controls limiting the ability to micromanage or just because Ensemble created a game for non-strategy fans and they had to really simplify the unit structure for people to easily pick up and play it.

Strategy games on the console need a different approach. The games back in the 6th gen called Full Spectrum Warrior did just that and were decent' because of it. Developers need to think of a different approach to RTS for a controller. It can be done but the games cannot just be lighter versions of traditional, PC focused RTSs.

I'm tired of the RTS genre, but know plenty of people that love them.

TBS games play just fine for the most part and I'd rather see an XCOM2 than another C&C game on consoles.

I would I'd love it if Sony and MS released a first party k/m setup, but will it ever happen?

I am not sure why nobody is making Full Spectrum Warrior 2 in an era where people just buy anything with American soldiers in Middle East.

And it's perfect for consoles too! We seriously need this game, expand upon the concept of the original, add in more things to control like tanks and whatnot, add in semi-interesting urah marine story, next-gen graphics, explosions.... voila, you have a game that will do well because it kinda looks like modern military shooter on the cover and is on consoles.

f2p mmos rts coming to consoles

think one was KUF2 so yeah there you go and its take on it looks sick

Loading Video...

The game combine Action RPG and RTS into one. PVE, Co-op, or PVP. You control one unique character guessing a general, and can "zoom" in or out to control your troops. Think Dynasty Warriors except this time you will be able to control the AI. Moreover, I think every time you encounter a boss, you must both fight the boss with your character and position troops accordingly in order to succeed. So you can't like pew pew boss by yourself and win as shown in the 3 Cop-op gameplay video above. Its free to play so we'll try it out, but not gunna invest much time into it. It's made by Koreans enough said. I would if it was subscription only though.

Big Budget RTS? why does it have to be big budget, are other strategy games lesser games because they do not have millions thrown at them, seriuosly why even add Big Budget into the title/.

RTS games do not need to be big budget, the true measure of an RTS comes from its game systems and mechanics and how they work together not about how many $ they can throw at it,totally the wrong mind set for the wrong genre.

That's because consolites have this concept of games where if they don't have big budgets they are indie garbage not worth playing.

They love numbers, that includes resolution, budgets, sales and scores (well except when the scores don't validate their purchase)

Console gamers can't get into difficult games like that. Its just too hard for them.

Stick to button mashers.

@Salt_The_Fries: Viva Pinata wasn't an RTS and also the "sequel" was more of a GOTY version of the first Viva game. I have the full gamerscore for both.

They tried pretty hard last gen and failed badly. Now the costs of making console games and most of all promoting them are even higher, so I wouldn't expect much movement on this side.It doesn't help that there aren't many candidates to porting. Early last gen there were plenty of simplier RTS with big production values to port. These days most of RTS es on PC are either niche or very hardcore, neither of which makes them a good candidate for porting.

So no, propably we won't see many RTS-es on consoles this gen. At best we can hope for is that during the next gen publishers will make another try.

It depends. Halo Wars plays very well with a controller!

On topic, i hope so. I would buy Starcraft 2 or a Heroes of Might and Magic (not RTS though) game for my PS4.

Explain "old outdated RTS" . And how those games are different than today's RTS games .? Even Sc2 had exact same mechanics as Sc1 . That makes no sense , but then again it's just Cranler's fake account made for trolling .
