With so many good online games being released on multiple platforms these day, (call of duty 4, gta4 and Grid for example) why cant they be played cross console online? Wouldnt it be cool to play call of duty 4 on your ps3 against your friend on his 360? You could have huge ps3 vs 360 online battles. How cool would that be?

I know its an unrealistic thing to hope for but whats to stop them? Are there any limitations that prevents this? I mean they are the same games with the same maps/tracks so why not. The only difference as far as I can see are the servers they use.

I'd love it. It would be funny if for Call of Duty 5, PC, 360, PS3 and Wii owners could fight5 each other. Then the Joystickers would get owned by the PC guys and, to a lesser extent, Wii owners.

No, it undermines the value of Xbox Live, so Microsoft will NEVER allow it.

Strangely, we kind of did it, with the help of the PC though.

The Wii players wouldn't even get toplay with the big kids, since they don't have the graphical capabilities to even render what theother three render.

Then theres the horrible friend codes, the lack of HDD, No headset support, and the constant freezing/booting found on Wii.

They wouldn't make it to the Deathmatch lobby.

PC, would own everyone though.

If it were done for FPS, 360 owners would destroy PS3 owners since 360 is a shooter console.

I know the "Why's", but the TC asked if we will ever see it. We already have, but don't expect to see much of it in the future other than situations like that.

In shooters likely not. Differing operating systems wouldnt allow the games to communicate as seamlessly as it would need to be. You would have to play through a cross-platform virtual emulator basically.

PS3 owners would just get slaughter though in any team based game that involves communication adn they will definately get destroyed in all FPS. Even though I hate the PS3 d-pad people say it is best for fighting games so 360 owners would lose in fighting games.

Everything else though should be dead even.

I think I saw something about Sony trying to this with a PC game sometime last year but M$ will never allow something like this to happen because it would undermine there milkage of LIVE from there consumer.

As if in a public game anyone says anything useful.

In a public game, having a mic doesn't matter because everyone acts individually anyway.

In an arranged team match, I doubt an organized team will skimp out on mics.

In some public games, not all. In my experience playing online games, the majority of the games I play, when I'm not with my friends, I communicate and strategize with my teammates. Hell, even something as trivial as "I've got two coming on the left side" or "They got me at Rocket spawn" is helpful and the type of things I hear on a consistent basis.

Quite honestly, those who have anything relevant and helpful to say are in the minority, and I'd rather not have to mute ninety-nine out of one-hundred people just so I can hear that one person who wants to contribute.

I know what I'm getting myself into when I go into a public game, and if I want to communicate and have real teamwork, that's what I have a contact list for.

Going into a public game and expecting cooperation leads only to frustration.

Like I said, maybe one person in a game will have something useful to say now and again, but I'd rather fend for myself than either have to listen to the complaining or small talk of everyone else.

you could do it with wii, PS3 and PC. But not 360 cos live sucks.

It could be done. I think its the parent companies that stop it.

IF it ever happens, it'll be from a third-party developer. Take GHIII for example, you don't directly compete with other consoles, but the high scores list are from the three consoles. So, I'd say sooner rather than later, you might start seeing cross console games.

I would like for it to happen, but I'm doubtful. MS like a closed system and I don't think they'd be willing to share as this would put it at risk, and they have built up a lot of publicity on having a premium online service and having this, would put PSN, a free system, on par with Xbox Live, a premium system.

It could be done, it happened between the PC and Dreamcast with Quake 3, and it also happened with PC and 360 for Shadowrun (I think that is what it is called I forget) So if the companies can agree how to do it it can work.

I'm talking about compared to xbox live live using the xbox things are different. You can basically set it up so you can play with certain type of people. Tha is what the rep is for and the reason why you chose hardcore, recreational and so on for your gamertag.

a few good reasons:

1) the controllers are different, its unfair

2) the 360 comes with headsets as standard. sony NEEDS to do this the jabra headset with warhawk is not good enough

3) all matches would become 360 Vs ps3 matches. Plus if a team was all 36 and there was one ps3 owner. i could imagine 360 owners killing that person, even if that counts as a team kill, its the same if it were the other way round.

The PS3 controller has some really nice advantages if there used in a manor that there intended to be used. And the thing is if I happen to be in a on-line game I may never talk at any time, instead I listen to what everyone is saying and using the information there talking about to an advantage in the game. Many times people that talk a lot can give you some real good information of where and how they get to a certain point in the game in which all it takes is getting into a position to ambush this person in the game. If and when I have something to say is only when it's needed to warn a team mate about an attack from a blind area.

No way, this is a forum, we don't share opinions here, we share facts. Duh.

On another note, it is possible I think, and the MS, etc. may not like it, and it would make it harder to get a lag-free experience and a pain to program. So I doubt we will see it.
