According to vgchartz.com, Nintendo has sold 6.75 million Wiis worldwide; Microsoft sits on top right now with 9.78 million. Nexgenwars.com also indicates a very close race with the Wii selling 6.9 million and 360 selling 10.66 million. I know these things aren't always reliable, but with numbers this close they seem to be accurate. Nintendo and Microsoft's statements regarding console sales also seems to go along with these numbers, as do Famitsu's weekly Japanese sales reports (Wii sold 102,000 units with 360 selling 3,162 units). Will Wii catch the 360 in worldwide sales BEFORE the holiday season? If it does, this is going to be a very crazy holiday season...actually, it's going to be crazy no matter what the sales numbers are. Clearly, Japan has played a key role in Nintendo's chase towards the 360. The Wii and DS are absolutely owning in Japan right now. Nintendo is supposedly releasing all of their "big" guns this year with Metroid, Smash Bros., and Super Mario Galaxy. The 360 has an equally amazing lineup with Halo 3, Mass Effect, and Bishock. One thing is for sure...I can't wait for all of these amazing games as these 2 fight for first place!
I was predicting that the Wii would catch up to the 360 by August. It's quite possible for the Wii to catch up to the 360 before the holidays, but it might be a little tougher maintaining that lead when Halo 3 and GTA IV comes out. However, despite the 360 surge, the Wii will surpass the 360 once more after the holidays and take the lead for good. *lovingly rubs his crystal ball*
