Assuming some improbable occurence like Sony going kaput doesn't happen, the PS3 will be around for ten years. Well, somewhere. some third world country will still be purchasing it, and maybe a developer or two might release something.

It won't last over 6 years before it's relegated as leftovers of the past for most people, though.

This 10 year lifecycle phrase is taken out of context.

It doesn't mean it will compete for two generations:

Next generation, Sony will release a PS4 to compete with the new MS and Nintendo machines. The PS3 will simply continue to be sold and receive a few games every now and again just like the PS2 does now.

so your saying that microsoft is already making a new xbox, while the last has been out for less than two years, and they havent turned a profit on it, yet they're putting another out, hoping to make a profit on that?

Of course they're making the next X-BOX. Development of new consoles usually begins near the release of the previous one.

There's a lot of work to release a console. You need to decide on an architecture, manufacture dev kits, provide enough time between the Dev Kit creation and launch for launch games to be developed, talk to third parties to negotiate deals, set up factories to mass produce the final product, and then build up an inventory of systems for launch.

It all involves a great deal of effort and time.

ok, but doesnt it seem a bit soon? I guess its good if they get released early jsut like witth the 360, which it seems they are abandoning for the new system.

Not at all. If they're aiming at a standard 5 year console lifecycle, they have to start a year ago.

If you wait at all between console generations to begin developing the next one, the competition will eat you alive.

Of course it will last 10 years, the first 7 years will be unopened in the box :)

The 10 yr mantra is just mindless pyschobabble to prop up morale over a horrible start to this generation for Sony. It is simply designed to justify:

A. a higher price point.... 'cause we put the super duper stuff in it that'll last forever, and

B.dismal starting sales...... 'cause this race will take forever to run and we are the turtle not the hare.

Very bad, very transparent Sony PR damage control. You can always tell damage control in any company....it is when a whole bunch of executives say the same thing over and over again in a short period of time using virtually exactly the same words. You can see the 'talking points' that have been developed by some communications officer to ensure that 'everyone is in step'. Translation: damage control.

And it is no different than MS executives talking 'in-sync' about failure rates. Same damage control.

It means nothing. The lifecycle of consumer products is decided by us the consumers...and we aren't waiting 10 years.

It will likely be late 2011, which roughly follows the standard 5 year console life cycle.

They are no longer behind enough to have to release late (original XBox), and they no longer have to shorten their lifecycle to release early and get a foothold in the market (360).
