You can now put away the torches and pitch forks.

Seems like the right move to me. :P

Thoughts?

The Story.

Microsoft finally lifts Windows Store 18-rated games ban

Windows 8 maker "expanding commitment" to gaming.

Microsoft has finally lifted its ban on 18-rated games such as Dishonored, Mass Effect 3 and Assassin's Creed 3 within the Windows Store.

The Windows 8 maker announced its controversial decision to not sell PEGI 18-rated titles back in October, but soon announced it had rethought the matter.

In a blog entitled "expanding our commitment to Windows Store games", Microsoft has now set out its new policy welcoming 18-rated content.

"Windows has long been a favourite platform for games of all types, and age rating support for PEGI 18 is another step forward in a rich tradition of supporting gaming on Windows," wrote Windows Store exec Ted Dworkin.

"In welcoming PEGI 18 games into the Store, we again reinforce two principles - flexibility and confidence - fundamental to the Windows Store. We recognise that people have come to expect and appreciate rich gaming experiences on Windows and this includes games rated PEGI 18."

1

He's happy.

Upcoming 18-rated launches will include The Witcher and Grand Theft Auto 4, Microsoft said.

"Your app must not contain adult content, and metadata must be appropriate for everyone," the company originally stated. "Apps with a rating over PEGI 16, ESRB Mature, or that contain content that would warrant such a rating, are not allowed," the Windows Store app rules stipulated back in October.

"Windows Store apps are appropriate for a global audience."

The decision initially concerned those uneasy at Microsoft's attempts to make Windows 8's Store the de facto method of purchasing content on the new operating system.

Steam boss Gabe Newell previously labelled Windows 8 a "disaster", which lead Eurogamer to investigate whether his fears were well founded.

Makes sense. Gamers seems to be upgrading to Windows 8 many times faster than the rest of the market.

Microsoft has said numerous times that they wanted to support PC gaming, they were singing the same tune when Fable III released and look how that turned out...Microsoft hasn't updated Games For Windows Live in ages and with the Windows Store I doubt they will support that **** service at all. Any promise of Microsoft support computer gaming will just be hot air until they actually do something worthwhile.

So let me get this straight, they banned the games from the store but now they're suddenly the saviors of gamers again because they got some hate? All that hate is now gone, never to be seen again because they reversed something that should have never have been done in the first place. "Windows has long been a favourite platform for games of all types" - And yet you went and banned some of the best games available. Something tells me this store won't be the huge success it wants to be.

That's what I've been doing lately... it's the best of both worlds. Luckily my study where my PC is located is adjacent to my living room, so I just run a long HDMI cable out to the TV and keep it under the baseboards, and it's been tremendous. With Steam's recent addition of Big Picture, it seems like this trend is catching on. I also ran a 30 foot USB cable extension too for a keyboard and mouse which can be eaasily hidden under the entertainment center. Now I just need some wireless headphones with a mic and it will be the perfect setup.

This doesn't say much that MS is commited to PC gaming again.

As it stands Sony publishes more games for Windows than Microsoft, and thats pretty disgraceful if you ask me.

windows 8's app store approved a super nintendo emulator based on snes9x.

http://apps.microsoft.com/windows/en-US/app/snes8x/d0c894c3-67a3-47e0-95df-405fb8eb9e25

a bit strange to see this stuff being welcomed with more opening arms than the rediculous witch hunts that have taken place in the past.

maybe 360 emulation is on the way?

Win 8 is a def no buy for me. Take out basic navigation features and try to sell them back to us when they were in there to begin with? Plus the 100 other reasons why Win 8 is horrible like worse performance in games compared to Win 7.. I'll never upgrade to Win 8, even if they start giving away free games. I'm not paying for a start button, win media player etc that comes free with all older OS's.

Wat?

I've not seen any charges for adding services like that. Especially when it's so easy to add the Start button and interface.

Steam is bassicaly closed off ecosystem and it would be absolute diseaster if it would ever dominate the whole market. Especially since Valve has been really screwing up devs and gamers lately.

Yeah, and not to mention win 7 / win 8 game preformance is virtually the same. And in lots of places win 8 preformance is actually an improvement, but whatever he doesn't want so its his loss

Then you're not following Steam developments closely enough. First was the whole EULA debacle, where Steam blackmailed it's whole European population by threatening to take away all games they've bought so far. Then came the whole Greenlight nonsense, where Valve got so lazy they moved most of their submission process for smaller devs to this terribly inefficent process, even devs who already have games on Steam.

I guess we have differing opinions. I wouldn't have called the EULA change a debacle or screwing over gamers.

Greenlight is something else entirely that I can't be bothered going into but there's been what 1 or 2 already established developers that had to take their next game through greenlight. That could have happened before Greenlight aswell.

Though I got to agree with you in a sense. How can something like WarZ get approved when lots of other great games that don't try and fvck you over as a customer not get approved. I do think Valve need to exhibit some quality control.

They havent offloaded all the greenlighting stuff to the community as games are still appearing on the Store front that aren't in the Green Light program.

The old name for Xbox is DirectX box. Wintel PC *is* the original DirectX box.

It's about time Microsoft use it's A-game platfrom and use it against Google and Apple.

With Intel Haswell's GT3 IGP,

Skyrim @1080p http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uohmFVIAASU

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 @1080p http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXgF_e1iJYE

Microsoft's Xbox 720 and Sony's PS4's AMD APU would need atleast Radeon HD 7770 level GPU to remain relevant in the gaming market.

Look at it realistically. Xbox 720 is almost out. Supporting Windows gaming now just doesn't make sense if Microsoft wants to sell a new console.

It's just "Please buy Windows 8. We will support PC gaming. Eventually."

That, and Windows 8 App Store is just total and utter crap.

I don't really see the point of upgrading to Win8 when Win7 works just fine. Even if I had a monitor that allowed touch control, I still wouldn't want it anyway because I don't like fingerprints on my monitor. Tablets and phones can have Win8, I will stick to Win7 for my desktop until there is an OS that is actually worth upgrading to.

It's a bit tempting to switch from Windows 7 to 8.

I didn't like the Metro UI till someone showed how you can customized the pins.

Screenshot.38608.1000000.jpg

you can literally make Windows 8 turn into The Steam OS.

They havent offloaded all the greenlighting stuff to the community as games are still appearing on the Store front that aren't in the Green Light program.clyde46
They have for smaller games. It was supposed to exclude devs that already have other games on Steam, but this turned out to be a lie.

Valve has proven they're every bit as "bad" as all the other big companies. People who think they're any different are just naive.
