Microsoft releases a beta version in between real versions for a quick cash in. Nothing new, Windows 8 will be a beta version with the price tag of a finished version. Windows 9 will be the complete version.

I downloaded the developer preview, and it's not too bad, but it's just not a significant change. I think releasing a hybrid of touchscreen and kb/mouse is a mistake.

I'm no expert on the system, but it seems like the new features don't really add much to the Windows experience.

I have mixed feelings about changing the explorer to be the ribbon style, the Metro UI is absolutely useless for me, and I don't care about the Windows Store.

I do like the shorter boot times and the improved optimization.

But I can see Windows 8 being a hard sell. It's just not that different from Windows 7.

Everyone flocked to Windows 7 because Vista was an abomination and everyone who invested in Vista wanted out as soon as possible.

But Windows 8? I'm not so sure.

Do you guys even know what you are talking about

90% of the problems with vista weren't problems with the OS, it was the changes that people didn't understand like UAC... prefetching which purposly utilized more ram to speed up stability... and **** drivers from all the companies that made hardware....

then vista had power management issues... didn't wake properly... and that was its biggest issue

But don't let my defense of vista fool you, windows 8 is going to be crap... the mixing of hte metro GUI and desktop gui so far is a complete crapfest, tyring to use it on a tablet is difficult everytime you need to access the desktop for certain thingss... and well being on a desktop with the metro gui that pops up is stupid.

windows 7 is pretty much vista with a new UI, it was slow when it was released because PC companies released insufficient hardware for vista with it preinstalled... but windos 8 does have some huge optimizations especially with boot speed...

Who cares?

Most people download every new Windows OS for free, and install it on a different partition for dual booting.

If it sucks, you can always go back to 7.

Likely.

The in between Windows OS tends to only be an upgrade of the previous one, with little significant improvements

Microsoft then hypes the new OS the second coming,

even though its just old1.25.

People don't buy/buy and are angry and switch back.

Apple tends to get a similar level of minor improvement, but does less hyping, and treats it more as an upgrade(thus avoid the hype bubble bust)

Sort of odd for current Apple though

Probably another vista.

Anyone know whether new versions of direct x are going to be tied to it?

Or are they going to let them run on win7?

I expect it to be a lot worst than Vista

For one it has no longer XNA support, then the Risk CPU support will probably make it the most unstable OS they have made by far

The interface is also too much and useless, the store idea is a joke in PC environment of course

Your statement is a LOL.

A cut-down Windows already runs on ARM i.e. Windows CE.

Modern X86 CPUs are internally RISC processors and Windows NT 4.0 was released on RISC CPUs like PowerPC, MIPS and Alpha.

Windows 8's Metro's tile UI is not much different to the current Valve Steam's tile UI.

Valve's Steam UI can integrate well in Windows 8's Metro UI.

What if Valve's Steam was ported to Metro UI

They are clearly aiming at touch based devices with this new version of Windows. I don't think that's very smart because those kind of PCs only account for a small fraction.

I don't see the advantages for people with desktop PCs/laptops. Who are the majority.

This will flop as hard as vista.

Win8 is the tablet os many were waiting for. Tablets right now are just toys and only cover a really really small marketshare because of that.

A computer that acts like a real PC in home with kb/m and x86 software then undock it and use it as a tablet when you go outside is the future and MS did the right choice in making win8 hybrid.

Not really no. When Vista released the Pentium 4 was the norm. There was a lot of weak hardware around. When win7 launche the dual core was the norm so it felt more light. I bought a new PC when Vista came out and had no problems whatsoever with it. As long as your hardware was not ancient Vista was fine, much better than XP.

The only thing i like about Windows 8 is the enhanced memory management. The "Security Features" are just competition lock-outs and is enabled by default, it's up to mobo manufacturers to add a disabler for this feature which is extra money and testing and 90% will not want this added burden. MS are going back to their roots of deviant tactics with a plausible excuse.

In my personal experience, it's way worse. File management is really bad. It takes 5-10 minutes to delete/copy a 5 kb file in the dev preview. On top of that, they scrapped the start menu entirely. Metro should supplement, not replace the start menu. Simple commands have become a chore.

Doubt it. THe reasons Vista sucked were lack of drivers. W8 uses the same drivers Win7 used, so there won't be any compatibility problems. In desktop mode it looks like simply and upgrade of W7, so there's no reason to believe it will suck.

Metro mode is different beast, but what's in beta already is much better than Windows7 ever was on tablets.

So overall it looks like a pretty great relese and definitely will be the most versalite OS ever made. Whether it will succeed on tablets is whole different matter, but this has little to do with it's quality.

Windows 8 is solid and will be a big hit. It is the operating system that will be the basis of their strategy to create a cohesive ecosystem between the phone, Xbox "720", PC's and Tablets. The biggest question is where to use Metro and where to allow the user to change to a traditional windows. But the important engineering issues seem to be ironed out because the OS is very stable this early on.

Personally, I love Windows 8. I have a developer preview build running on one of my machines. It'll be just as good, if not better than Windows 7. It's the culmination of this multi-year ecosystem effort Microsoft has been doing. Microsoft is going to have an ecosystem that rivals Apple when this is released.
