This have got to be the most linear and scripted open world game I've played this year. Why can't your AI partner just talk about the mission details while traveling on horseback to the destination, instead we first have to trigger a 5 minute cutscene with multiple decision makings about the mission then ride the horseback in complete silence with a GPS over your head. How about copy RDR like instead of triggering a cutscene talking about hearding the farm animals, how about just actually take the player out to the field and let them play hands on while guiding them in hearding the animals. Or GTA 5 where random events pop up as a screen flash and a dot on the map and you just jump right into it without having to sit through a five minute cutscene for a Damm side mission and side characters who you'll probably never see again.

They need to add some life to this game, even though it's open it feels so scripted. make the main characters feel living and breathing, it's like there's a GPS arrow over your head at all times. And pressing X doesn't just skip the cutscene, you'll have to make multiple decisions and skip multiple cutscenes before you can even play, it's like a GTA bank robbery heist in every Damm mission and side mission

1. You can disable the HUD for a completely HUDless experience through the in game options.

2. There aren't even that many cutscenes.

Also: "Boo hoo, I don't want to make decisions. I just want to be hand held."

It sounds like you have no idea what an RPG is. RDR is not an RPG. Let's just get that fact straight from the get-go.

Cutscene and GPS simulators are a thing now ?

I always thought walking simulator was such an unimaginative name...

Shiity games have been receiving underserved praise for a long time. Why start complaining now?

If Witcher 3 is a cutscene simulator, then most other games would be menu simulators, since you spend about the same percentage of time in the main menus of those games compared to how much time you spend in Witcher 3's cutscenes.

And who's to say when a game's praise is "undeserved"?

Someone on Neogaf said it pretty eloquently: "The Witcher 3 is not an open world RPG, it's an RPG set in an open world."

There's a large distinction between the two. If you're expecting the former then you're going to be disappointed.

*placeholder* Simulator.

This term? Fucking stupid. People need to stop using it as if it's a legitimate criticism.

Also, you seem upset that you have to do actual role-playing in an RPG. Sorry about your luck I guess?

Disabling the HUD/GPS doesn't make the game better. I've been trying this with open world RPGs since Morrowind and Shenmue 2 (both of those games have fantastic navigations without GPS).

The fact is, the game is designed with objective markers in mind. Quest givers don't give you much indication of where you have to go: they'll say something vague about a location and that's about it.

It's one of the only things I dislike about the Witcher 3, but it's a problem with modern open-world gaming as a whole. If the Witcher 3 had great combat and revolutionary navigation, the game would essentially be flawless.

Never thought I'd see the day someone put "Neogaf" and "eloquence" in the same sentence.

Hats off to you, my friend.

If the production values are slick enough, people will let a lot through.

The trilogy has always been dialogue heavy. It gets away with it because the dialogue and characters are really really interesting - and just as entertaining as the rest of the content in the game.

@Planeforger: I mean you can still have interesting character without making the player sit through constant five minute dialogues, it starts to get old. I'd take a Rockstar approach and give the player control while the AI talk so you're not constantly trapped in a cutscene making decisions

The witcher 3 actually is designed to be played without markers and gps, the characters give plenty direction to the general area of your objectives

You must be joking? The Witcher 3 is an RPG first and foremost. It's is mostly a story driven experience.

I think it has great combat. It's fluid, albeit a bit buggy, but still fun as hell. More fun combat than any other RPG I can think of, sans Dark Souls games(and Lords of the Fallen, but that's a 1:1 copy, so I don't count it).

@morf-muziks: I find it odd for someone to complain about a game being "too linear" and also complain about having to make so many choices in the same post.
