Curiousity has gotten to me after I read that article about DMC4 requiring a mandatory 5GB installation on the PS3. Well my question is if games can be made to have a mandatory installation on the PS3 doesn't that bascially diminish the need or usage of Blu-Ray?

PC's don't need Blu-Ray because they have HDD's that they can put the game disc information on. PS3's are all equiped with standard HDD's (unlike 360's) and can by all means achieve the same kind of game installation that the PC is capable of.

Now with DMC4 having a "MANDATORY" installation, an installation similar to PC games doesn't that defeat the purpose of the Blu-Ray disc? (for gaming that is)

If need be why not just use the HDD to install games similar to how a PC does? Its not like a lot of games are going to need these kind of installations and what not. Hell DMC4 on 360 doesn't need one (makes me wonder why the PS3 needs one though but I guess someone who knows more about tech could explain that one)

So I guess the big question is, if PS3's can install games similar to how a PC installs games then what's with all the Blu-Ray is needed for gaming ect.

PC's can live without it. PS3 can install like PC's can. Is there something I'm missing here?

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing when I sat through 10 minutes of installation/updating when my friend booted up assassins creed on his ps3 for the first time.

that along with reports that the extra space on the bluray disc is used to hold redundant copies for faster loading makes me think bluray isn't the best format for games.

I would think developers would have better insight into this rather than a bunch of fanboys claiming it isn't and others claiming it is. Especially 99.9999% have never developed a game.

Blu_Ray is a home movie format. Sony put it on the PS3 in order to get an install base for it. Gaming on BR was an afterthought.

Honsetly, I would have been much more inclined to buy a PS3 at launch had it included a monster hard drive and a standard DVD drive.

Sounds right to me. Sony is also a movie studio, so they wanted the DRM capabilities of BR. All divisions of Sony had their hands on this product in one way or another.

As for how PCs work for gaming, it would give a better gaming experience when it comes with a HD disk.

BluRay being put in PS3 by Sony had NOTHING todo with gaming- it was all about getting several million relatively cheap BluRay players onto the market in order to beat HD-DVD. & its worked- although the war isnt over yet- ask anybody & they'll tell you that BluRay is clearly winning & HD-DVD is dying a death.

PS3 could easily use DVD9 like Xbox360- BluRay is not needed- ive said this from the start.

seeing assome 360s dont have an HDD a manditory load would be stupid on their part. i think Bluray is good for one thing, uncompressed sound so things sound much better. hmm, i guess lems are willing to get up and switch discs while cows just have to wait a little longer to load. we both win and lose get over it.

HD DVD and Blu-Ray are the same as DVD. They are also the same as a memory stick, a floppy disk, or a game cartridge. It is merely a medium that holds digital info in the form of 1's and 0's. HD information can be put on anything that holds digital info. But thanks for buying into Sony's marketing ploys.

I dont know. You have good points, but it's hard to deny that you can just fit a whole lot more on bluray disc then on a dvd. People always bring up compression, but is there a reason you can't do compression on a bluray disc for even MORE space? And, although there will always be installs and such, no console but the ps3 has the ability to install, which could have been the 360's saving grace, but whatever. All that space isn't needed for any game out today, but that might change by the end of the gen. Mark my words---THE PS3 WILL HAVE THE BEST GAMES OF THIS GEN, JUST LIKE THE N64 HAD.

In the far future, I imagine that not only will the quantity of information required for games increase exponentially, but also that bluray players will read the discs better than they are doing now.

Why did games move to dvd discs from cds huh? Then answer is space, and sooner or later dvd will be buckling

Why bother posting if you can't contribute to either end of a thread? I'm no tech genius. I'm asking why? Maybe you would do better to explain rather then rant angerly?

First I can post anything I want to anywhere I want to and that was my point. And maybe you should not accuse people of something you do not know. Why would I be angry with people I have no reason to be concerned about?

My whole point is that the developers are the ones that know the true advantages to blu-ray not games. Some like Naughty Dog used the blu-ray for storing uncompressed data and used the hdd for a buffer so that the game can stream data from the blu-ray to the HDD in the background. Others like Motorstorm used the disc for uncompressed data but used it totally and the long load screens are the reason for that.

Again my point was the developers have the choice to use the technology or not and then to optimize it to make it even better but that is their choice. SO to say what is or not needed from a non-developer perspective is pointless unless there are developers in the forums that are current working with this.
