With HD-DVD victory imminent, what does the future hold for the PS3? Will Blu-Ray eventually become just a PS3 format? How will it affect PS3 sales?zazoo4455With a HD-DVD victory, yes Blu-ray would become a PS3 only format. The only effect it would have on sales is that the people that would be buying it just for movies would not buy it anymore.
With HD-DVD victory imminent, what does the future hold for the PS3? Will Blu-Ray eventually become just a PS3 format? How will it affect PS3 sales?zazoo4455Wow they just started, is the blue ray disc already in trouble?
Sony deservers all thats comming to them for all their dirty business practices. If blu-ray fails, it's almost a sure doom for the PS3 because the publicity that is going to come will be very negative. It will be labled as the console with the "obsolete" High Def dvd-player etc by the know-nothing journalists in the big media publications. Sony will HAVE TO take the blu-ray function out of the PS3 if it has any dreams of selling it to the public after blu-ray has failed.QFT.
Sony simply gambled WAY too much on this new format and integrating it into the PS3, they should have made it an add-on which would have made it much cheaper.. but then again... SONY is GREEDY and they wanted to force blu-ray into your home... typical.

If someone does not like something then it automatically becomes a failure well before it has been released.

Wow that must have some really good stuff where you live, because you must be on something for you to say it is imminent that HD-DVD has won or will win..........please give me your source or your supplier!!

It won't. People buying PS3's mainly want games, not movies.Israfel856exactly. the average joe that doesn't care about games isn't going to buy a ps3 for the blu ray player

They will not let other companies make third party wireless accessories because of their proprietary wireless technology they use on the Xbox 360. MICROSOFT IS GREEDY!

[QUOTE="bigmark64"][QUOTE="kyosukeugc"]dude, nothing is known for sure yet. please refer to the 4654987 threads on this subject.... Nothign is known f or sure on anything. And if BD does lose, well it'll still be a godo media storage format and work for the games...gmastersexayyea thats what SEGA thought with the GD-Rom. Sega's demise had nothing to do with the GD-Rom format.
Sure not directly related, but it added to development and manufacturing costs because the rest of the world was moving to DVD's.
I too think it's a bit early to give the trophy to HD-DVD. There are a lot of companies making hybrid players that may keep both formats viable. Sony's really just starting to get Blu Ray out there and it is a superior format so we'll see what happens...
However, you do have to keep Beta Max in mind when talking about this, so assuming Sony does lose the format war, those Blu Ray discs may end up being too expensive to keep producing. And with most cross-platform games most likely never exceeding the 360's DVD 9 capacity, I think Sony may abandon the format and switch to producing DVD 9 games, which the PS3 is still capable of using. The bad thing about all of this is that whether they switch to DVD 9 or not, Sony will have to keep putting the Blu Ray drives in all of the PS3's since there are games now that use it. This will keep the system's cost high and therefore, the price probably won't drop anytime soon. That's gonna put the 360 on a pretty level playing field with the PS3, and it would certainly make things interesting.
Bottom line, it wasn't a good move on Sony's part...a little too risky for my taste. But who knows, it may pay off in the end.

You’re right I never thought of that. Sony will be in a really bad situation if Blu-ray fails. The only logical thing to do would be to take out the function on it’s future PS3s to decrease the cost… but dam..you’re right, those new ones will not be able to play the blu-ray games that are out now. They would have to put some sort of disclaimer on the new PS3s stating they cannot play blu-ray games. Messy messy messy, I doubt the consumer’s are going to even try to attempt to deal with that.
P.s. Does anybody know how much how much the blu-ray function adds to the PS3s price?
HD-DVD is far from winning. in fact the winner still looks more likely to be Blu-Ray.PS3OwnsYouwow, you dont read do you? HD DVD is outselling blu ray by a large margin. there are more titles to choose from on HD DVD. more studio support for blu ray, but the studio's like disney said they wont make any movies for blu ray until they know who will win the format war, so they back it, but wont use it yet. makes a lot of sense eh? HDVD HAS more movies to choose from, cheaper price, selling more players than BLU RAY.
Here's a quick rundown based off of Boxofficemojo, naming the studios of the top 20 highest grossing movies this year, and which formats those movies will be going to.
1. Disney (Multiplat)
2. Disney (Multiplat)
3. Fox (Bluray)
4. Sony (Bluray)
5. WB (Multiplat)
6. Fox (Bluray)
7. Paramount Dreamworks (Multiplat)
8. Sony (Bluray)
9. WB (Multiplat)
10. Sony/Columbia (Bluray)
Stop here for a second. In the top ten movies this year, HD-DVD only gets no exclusives, Bluray gets five. Moving on.
11. Paramount (Multiplat)
12. Sony (Blu-ray)
13. Fox (Bluray)
14. Fox (Bluray)
15. Universal (HD-DVD)
16. WB (Multiplat)
17. Weinstein (HD-DVD)
18. Paramount (Multiplat)
19. Universal (HD-DVD)
20. Sony (Bluray)

Even in the last half, Bluray, STILL has more exclusives. Just as the console wars go, the format wars follow the same rules. You cannot determine a winner within the first year. In the next 6 months, or so, HD-DVD's only going to have 3 exclusive top 20 movies. While Blu-ray gets 9.
Not to mention the games that are also coming out on Blu-ray that HD-DVD doesn't even have a gaming format to compete with. Tell me, how do Blu-ray software sales look when compared to HD-DVD, and including both movies AND games? And how will they look next fall?
Again, this thing hasn't even begun.

MICROSOFT IS GREEDY! gmastersexay
Please. Casino Royale and Spider Man 3? your idea of Truely brilliant films is jaded.
HD-DVD has (just to name 2 films that are better) Goodfellas and V for Vendetta (although i haven;t seen Spider Man 3, i assume V is better as its a better film than the other spider man films)x037leox
Also HD-DVD players play DVD also, and Blu-Ray players DO NOT. This is a HUGE BLOW to Blu-Ray players.
HD-DVD victory is imminent.
