I have a general question. How many people only own a PS3 after their first, second, third, or whatever Xbox360 broke? I only ask because had my 2nd 360 not broken down on me, I probably would have never bought a PS3, so I'm wondering how much damage MS has really done to themselves with these errors.

I readopted once Jasper was released, but now with E74, I'm back to being afraid to turn it on again.

This is a fanboy area, so expect many bashers to come in here...

Anyways, Here's my story :

I have had the 360 since 2005 launch. At Xmas 2006, I got RROD. Xmas 2007, RROD. Xmas 2008 RROD.

I have had RROD 3 times, and E74 once.

In fact, I had a massive thread on E74, and fanboys were coming in and claiming I was making it up, that they never heard of it, etc.

Funny thing, looking back. :)

I have had Two 60gig PS3's since launch (One in the bedroom for Blu-Rays, I have HDTV's only in my house.). No problems ever.

-------------------------------------------------

HISTORY IN THE MAKING!

SYSTEM WARS FIRST E74 thread, look at all the replies! Look at all the doubters, and the others learning! Yay!

Oh yea my 360 broke 2,501 times. It had the RROD, E74 and C-3PO. It was horrible and when I called MS they were so rude and came over to my house and took a wiz on my lawn. J/K These are the kind of exaggerations you will get in SW, so try not to use this as your statistical control.

I'll have to say that my experience with MS products inspired me not to purchase a 360 before my PS3 and I still haven't purchased a 360 because of their poor hardware. Anyone who has used MS hardware (keyboard, mouse etc) can tell you that their hardware is usually a disaster.

Back when my first one broke, MS hadn't extended the warranty and I was just over a year. They were going to charge me $130 bucks to fix it, so I set it at the bottom of my closet as a future project and went out and bought a core system from Best Buy with the warranty. When MS extended the warranty, I fixed the original, sold it (at a loss of course) minus the HDD, and when my new one broke, I used the BB giftcard from the warranty to get the PS3.

Honestly, if that 2nd one had never broke, I would have never felt the need for a PS3. MGS does nothing for me, and the FPSers from the PS3 are beyond generic IMHO. When it works, I feel the 360 is the superior system, but the problem is after 2 failures the new arcade system I bought gets next to no play because I'm afraid to turn it on and play it for extended periods of time. I only just recently hooked up Live again, and I only did that so I could watch streaming NetFlix. I only own 2 games for the 360 vs around 10 for the PS3.

MS really screwed the pooch with this gen IMO on QC and has made me wary of buying their next console.

I can tell you that I bought a PS3 to watch blurays with the added bonus of a few games I like for it.

I can also tell you that the biggest reason I do not have a 360 is because they break and I like to play my consoles for decades not just three years.

I play games in shifts, and I rarely jump around playing different titles. I'm playing SF4 heavily right now, so if my system breaks I'm playing nothing. I buy multiplats on PS3 because of this, even if they are not as good.

i have 3 buddies with 360s. all 3 of them have gotten RRoD 2 times each. one of them just baught an elite 2 months ago only to have it RRoD.

Me and 3 other friends have ps3 since launch. a couple 60 gigs a 20 gig and a later purchased 80 gig. zero problems with any of them.

PS3 is just way more reliable and better built. multilplats are looking the same. in some cases we're now getting the better versions, although late. like NGS2 and a JRPG i don't remember the name of.

plus PS3 is getting a HUGE list of exclusives this year. 360 has quite a few but nobody ever says anything about anything other the halo ODST

The way I look at it, is when I buy electronics, I hope to have them for a decade, but I guess it's different in SW when 3 years is the end all be all warranty for a product known to go bad (I have had 3 RROD's myself, and one E74, I would KNOW!!!).I wish they made reliable NES's, I wish RCA made better TV's, and Windows wasn't so hacker friendly, but I guess lesson's have been learned.Yeah, lessons.

Kia gives a great warranty if you buy a new car from them...no thanks. Sometimes the important "WHY" needs to be scrutinized. But I guess SW is different.

The new announcement does not make the 360 any more reliable. My point? People that can't stand unreliable hardware will not get a 360 now just becaus the warrany now covers something that should have been covered since day one.

Okay, I only payed once, but I didn't have too. I decided after my 2nd RROD, I would go back to the store and upgrade for an ELITE, since it had the new Falcon, etc. I paid a price difference, since i didn't want to deal with it (That didn't work, obviously.) I wasn't compensated for my time, the transportation, the gas, or the inconvience.

Calling Customer support is a nightmare also, you have to explain everything to somebody else on the phone, sometimes they don't even understand you because their service is based in the middle east, or whatever.

You are right, the fee isn't an issue, so much as the inconvience of having to wait. I guess I have not had a 360 about 3-4 months due to these errors, and that's time that was taken from me. That blows. I would much rather have a reliable electronic device, than buy something that incoviences me here and there.

I payed Premium dollars for my entertainment center, my house, my car, and HDTV's because reliability is an issue with me. I want no headaches, no fuss, no phone calls, nothing.

I will pay more money to not suffer through any of that.

my 360 has broke once since launch, and it didn't make me want to sell it at all. I also bought a ps3 in late 2008, so i don't think the 360 breaking had any impact on me buying or not buying a ps3.

I'm sure it's done some damage to MS but overall people are dumb in the end. They **** and moan how the PS3 is expensive but are willing to upgrade to Elite without thinking of it. They never ask if they should replace their broken X360, they just drive to the store and buy another one without thinking of it. A good example, my boss is on his 3rd X360........when I asked why he didn't get a PS3 he said it cost too much. I honestly thought of slapping him.

Wasnt an issue for me, heard about RROD so waited after first of consoles, got the pro a year later, then swapped out the pro for an elite a year or so later, then ps3 a year after that, no issues with the elite as of yet, Knock on wood.

Never thought of it that way, my friend wonders why i have a ps3 when i already have a 360, i tell him the games, and he's like i'll never pay 400+ for a new system. Funny thing is he got his pro for 300 had to send it in for a repair that wasnt covered by the 3 year warranty, he had a problem with the disc tray popping open while playing sometimes. He used to duct tape the door shut but got tired and bit the bullet and sent it in for repairs. 300 bucks plus the cost of the repair, i think he said it was like 75 bucks, not sure exactly since it happened almost a year ago, is almost to the price point of a ps3. It's a good thing that they cover the two major problems now, but if their willing to extend the warranty for these two issues why not extend it for the others.

I had one pretty roughly used 360,with the COD face plat and a broken distray.Anyway though with around 1 year of extensive use it never RROD on me.But since i had to try MGS4 and Uncharted i exchanged it.The new owner tells me that he had disc reading issues, but no rrods.

I think it all depends on your luck.In my frends circle and a few shops i visit, roughly out of 4 360 owners 2 usually end up getting RRODed.And even 3 sometimes. But the ones which dont get it,never had any issues.People are still using launch 360s.

PS3 on the other hand is entirely different story. If i do the math, out of around 20 PS3s none of my frends EVER got a single problem, including one who dropped his 21" TV on his PS3 :D.And also including one who had the vents covered from a cloth and he called me up to ask why was it making so much noise ! :D After the cloth was removed, around 10 mins rest was given to the PS3 and it was back to normal.

Ive only had one fail, but it was a launch system so no free repair for me. I certainly wont replace it, but thats not to say i wont consider a 720, unless you still have to pay for online MP.

i had one 360 conk out (it wasn't RROD, but some sort of strange disc read error). i exchanged it at best buy (still under warranty). my 2nd unit has been fine 2+ years now. strangely enough, my PS3 did actually break on me. it was something to do with the power connection. at any rate, Sony was very fast and courteous, and fixed it for free.

honestly, it just doesn't make much sense to me to trade in a console to get another one. i mean, let's say you've had a bunch of RROD and E74 problems with 360s. the bottom line is, you will get a terrible return on your investment totrade it in. its better to just save for the PS3, and keep utilizing the 360 warranty, IMO.

thats pretty insane with the tv thing if its true, Never had a noise issue with either system, only time the Elite would get loud it seems is when i use the plug and play kit other than that pretty quiet.

I complete lack of customer support in my country is what's keeping me from buying a 360 to begin with. That doesn't stop me from feeling sorry for the victims of RROD though.

I did buy a PS3, but it had nothing to do with hardware failure on my 360. In fact, I love my 360. I had one RROD in June '07 and no problems since. I know only one other person that has had an RROD, and most of my friends have 360s. The problem with console switching is that by the time you decide to do it, you have way too much money tied up in games and accessories for the other system. I imagine that most people would simply have their console repaired for this reason. I bought the PS3 because it's a decent blu-ray player and because there were a few games that I wanted that I couldn't play on the 360.

p.s. I'm normally very gentle with electronics, but I'm hard on my 360. I move the system from room to room. Since I live on a church campus, it's even been moved from building to building. It's been dropped by me (on accident) from a table three feet high, messed with by my two year old, and generally used hard. It's held up well.

Majordutch201

thats pretty insane with the tv thing if its true, Never had a noise issue with either system, only time the Elite would get loud it seems is when i use the plug and play kit other than that pretty quiet.

Yea the Tv incident is pretty much true, thoughit didnt fall right on the PS3.Half of it went on my frends foot.Anyway,it did leave a big scratch on the cover plate of his 60 gig PS3. The loudness issue was with my frends 40 gig PS3 when he accidentally covered the top air intake vent with cloth.Which resulted in less air intake and caused the fan to go to max speed.

360 Elite 2 red rings one magically fixed itself, launch 60gb PS3 overheated once after a 8 hour gaming marathon one summer, other than that no PS3 problems, controller keeps disconecting on 360 though =(

I bought a 360 at the end of 2006 and it RROD'd on me in mid 2008. I modded the system back in 2007 to play some of the JRPG's that weren't being released in the EU for a while and I voided the warranty on the system. Now I'm stuck with it. I plan to buy an arcade unit soon and put in the hdd from my old 360. Still have a lot of games to still play on the 360, like L4D.

I bought a PS3 at launch and still haven't had any problems.

You're the biggest ******* in denial.

In denial of what, exactly? What am I denying?

To be honest, you aren't making sense.

So you must be one of the bashers I mentioned in the first sentence of my post? I don't know why you called me a name, and said I'm in denial, but I would appreciate some sort of explanation. I explained my story, it's an old one that everyone here has heard.

Actually, SolidTy is one of the more objective posters at SW. and it certainly is true that the 360 is not reknowned for its reliability.

Doesn't mean the ps3 is invincible though, i appreciate MS finally covering their asses with their errors

I've had my 360 die of E74 AND DRE, but my gf's dad's ps3 also died and he had to pay for his (not that DRE is covered but I still got a new one free)

I remember waiting for the HDMI to launch before I bought one just to ensure it wasn't a leftover defect and it broke down of 2 diff errors.. don't get me wrong, it's faulty crap

but when I was sending my wii back through UPS, they actually told me they see a lot of ps3s going to sony, and this was like 2-3 months into the launch

Ah, thanks Clone! :) I am still trying to figure out what I am Denying! :)

No electronics device is perfect, but the problems this gen are lame. The 360 is a great gaming machine, but the issues with either RROD or E74, or Disc Scratching/Disc Errors is just outlandish.

I love the machine, but if they made a 360 Premium Umbreakable model, I would pay extra and buy it in a heartbeat.

I play games to get away from stress, I don't need to come home and deal with this once a year.

(Yes, I'm aware that a small amount of Wii's have a GPU issue, and the PS3's too, it's expected on a small scale):)

and i certainly agree with that. heck, i had a PS3 die and me that i had to send to Sony to get fixed. however, i do think there is some truth to the E74 error.

I agree that sometimes people feel the have invested too much to just give up on it........that's exactly what MS expected people to feel when they released the X360 too early. No matter how bad the product is people don't want to just give it up. It reminds me of my old house where I did everything in my power to stay in it even though it was a money pit. It becomes an honor thing I guess where we just don't want to admit we were wrong. That's exactly how you can have a product die on someone 5 times yet they still go back for more. As I said in my earlier post, we are just dumb......MS knows this. What scares me is if people are willing to put with such a piss poor product now, what incentive does MS have to make sure thier next machine works on par with Sony? IF people are willing to buy broken **** there is no reason to spend the money to make sure it works near flawlessly if they don't care about it.

The PS3 is not invincible, and no one here has said that.

Also, your story of some random UPS guy is hearsay, it's just anecdotal evidence.

I can give you the same kind of testimonial, I was a higher up and worked for a BIG BOX retailer, HUGE, I won't say what company, but they are considered to be the BEST at what they do. Anyways, the amount of PS3's and Wii's that came in for repairs were so MINIMAL. The amount of 360 was crazy, in fact, MY PREVIOUS COMPANY actually stopped selling warranties for the 360 DUE to it's defect rate.

That beats any UPS guy story, and it's true. I also have a few buddies that are District Managers of Gamestop, and I could tell you some crazy stories.

None of that matters, you see, the Wii has GPU issues that are all over the place, and it's so minor, that it's accepted. You see, a small amount of ANY ELECTRONICS break down, it's a sad fact of life.

YOU WAITED for a better 360, and that didn't work, that should tell you something.

As far as any product being invincible NO ONE SAID THAT, so let's be fair here. :)

My so-called Jasper xbox 360 broke within 3 months with RROD (got it Dec 08). One of my friend's 360 had one for about a year and it broke(rrod).

However, 1 of my other friends still has his 360 from launch and it's still living.

yeah, i'm not sure what the magic formula is. i've had very few problems with mine (after replacing the first one, of course), but i know others who have had a ton of issues.

You are neglecting the fact that because of the RROD, ANY errors will be magnified hugely. Also, can we see a link showing that it is Jasper's getting the E74 and not older units? If you want to be fair, let's look at this a little more objectively.

I had two xbox's break down on be before i bought a ps3 and recently after about year i decided i would try one last time. I bought an xbox 2 weeks ago since i got a free copy of gears 2. Still i'm getting my multiplat and exclusives for the ps3 now regardless of exclusive dlc. Should my system break on me again I'm done.
