As the split up with these 2 becoming more and more public and dirty laundry coming out it is starting to get a little ugly.

Sony's damage control has already been shot down and debunked and their stock prices took a hit. Last Spider-man film made over a billion but the rest of their film division is really struggling.

I don't know about the rest of you but I found out Sony only has the Film rights (I thought the had everything except comics and merch) and it is not transferable. Therefore if Sony Films is ever sold to another corporation (with the way things are going, is not out of the realm) or if they stop making movies after so much time it goes back to Marvel.

Marvel owns Spiderman everywhere else. So if they say "OK Sony, since you want to be Arrogant Dicks there is nothing stopping us from making TV shows, Spiderman as a host of Sports Center (I would totally watch that), or pulling the PS exclusive video game rights and going to EA, Activision, Xbox studios etc. Which would be so easy to do, and will more than likely make them more $$$"

Don't think it could not happen? Marvel/Disney played pretty dirty when they acquired Fox. And you really don't want on this behemoth's bad side.

UPDATE-Rumors are swirling that a Deal has been reached and signed and will be announced on Saturday at Disney's big annual event and showcase.

It’s good that Sony stood up to Disney, the giant, greedy corp who seems to be overtaking everything. They wanted merch rights AND 50% movie profits which is ridiculous when Sony paid for movie rights fair and square 20 years ago.

I think the PS4 exclusive game was part of the Tom Holland movie deal, so if the relationship between Sony and Disney is no more than the game rights are kind of up in the air I’d think.

Disney will just make more twitter bots and dumb fans will storm Sony to bring back Spidey cause Tony Stark didn't die for this.

I would assume it impacts any game deal, unless a sequel was already under contract most likely that was part of the overall package with Spiderman. Bummer because I was really hoping for a sequel here.

However it also sounds like Sony was in the right. Considering Spiderman is their property and Disney was demanding 50% of profits. That is a ridiculous trade-off. Disney obviously wants to take control of the property.

Apparantly Stan Lee's family had some unkind words for Disney, which surprised me (considering the guy had a cameo and producer's credit in literally every Disney/Marvel film). But I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. That's what big corps do, don't expect them to respect the little guy or original creators.

Something needs to be understood about Spider-Man. Disney OWNS the IP of Spider-Man, not Sony. Sony only has the filmmaking rights to the character, and that does not include video game rights. Sony can get by with making Spider-Man games, not because they own the rights, but because no one else would make a Spider-Man game. Disney does not have a stake in the video game industry so it is not their interest to fight over the video games.

It must be understood what type of contractual obligations Sony has with the Spider-Man rights: They have to KEEP making Spider-Man movies in order for them to continue to produce them - and that includes making movies of anything within the Spider-Verse (i.e Venom). The moment Sony stops making Spidey films, the film rights go back to Disney.

With all the drama going on right now between Sony and Disney - I think Sony is making a bad call to "break up" with Disney. Spider-Man: Far From Home just made over a billion dollars at the box office, and that would not have been possible without the involvement in the MCU. It is by far one of the highest grossing films to date for Sony, and the MCU can be thanked for that. If they really sever ties with Marvel things are only going to go downhill. While Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was an incredible film, it completely flopped financially. That's the type of stuff we can expect with Spidey on his own and that could ultimately cost Sony their film rights. When they lose film rights, they will likely lose video game duties as well.

If I were Sony, I'd be playing ball with Disney, because ultimately Disney is going to absorb the IP when Sony runs out of resources to continue supporting it.

Disney is perfectly within their rights to ask for a different deal, just as Sony is within their rights to turn it down.

(Although J.C Lee has a different saying in the matter)

You can't be terribly mad at what's written in their contractual obligations. Sony can only have Spider-Man movie rights for as long as they keep milking the franchise. That's what people will be asking for if they really want Sony to keep the movie rights.

I know Disney is a big and powerful company, but you can't really be mad at them for being the ONLY company to give Marvel what they wanted in the first place. This entire time Marvel wanted to be its own film studio making shared-universe movies. They wanted this since way back in the 90's. No movie studio back then wanted to back Marvel on this one, and not even Sony. The only reason why Sony has (temporary) film rights to Spider-Man now, is because Marvel went through the desperate times of bankruptcy back then and they had to send off their IP's separately to different movie studios just to survive.

At the end of the day I think it is a bad choice on Sony's part to sever ties with Disney. It is proof Spider-Man is at its very best because of the MCU, and box office numbers prove it perfectly well just how much better off Spidey is with its parent house. To have Spider-Man no longer in the MCU, audiences will likely lose interest and it won't see the MCU success anymore, and Disney will just absorb it anyways.

Don't forget what Marvel Comics did to the Fox owned properties. They killed off the most popular X-Men of all time-Wolverine before the movie Logan came out, They Killed Dead Pool, and they made everything Fantastic 4 disappear.

They have no qualms about taking a short term hit and playing dirty. They can more than afford to play the long game.

The video game deal could easily go bust, Marvel could easily open it up to the highest bidder, make it themselves or squash it completely. (get it? like a bug)

Spider-man needs MCU more than MCU needs Spider-man.

@davillain-: Disney has full plans to absorb the Spider-Man IP, possibly sooner than a lot of us expect. Just look at their theme parks. They're building a Spider-Man ride right now at Disneyland in California, and another one at one of their foreign parks. Disney is not stupid to be putting all the money into building permanent rides at their theme parks if they don't plan on having full ownership of it.

They were doing fine without Marvel, so getting a 50% deal is the worst.

Even Venom did great as far as money goes.

Disney needs to understand that Marvel sold the film rights to the character a long time ago and demanding that said film company needs give up half of the action on a franchise worth billions was going to naturally hit some resistance. Sony's within their right to go back to making garbage Spider-Man movies. Because even tired ones like Amazing Spider-Man 2 still grossed $700 million. Venom cleared nearly a billion.

That property will never go back to Disney unless Sony pictures completely dries up. They can keep making low-key Spidey universe related projects to keep the rights out of Disney's hands forever. Disney are the ones that need to re-negotiate for something less heavy-handed. They pulled the equivalent of giving someone a lottery ticket, and demanding the proceeds when it turns out to be a winner.

Disney seemed fine with the previous terms that left them 100% of the merchandise from the Spider-Man films, which is a good take all it's own. This is a power play to wrestle the franchise back. Especially since buying Fox has already taken a toll on Disney and they want to try to fill the holes anyway they can. Considering they're not used to running a movie studio who's output doesn't completely rely on superheroes, cartoons, and live action remakes of said cartoons like before the millennial Disney Era.

The Spider-Man video game is a Marvel licensing deal separate from the film deal. I doubt it will be affected. I'm sure Sony made sure that's covered for multiple games.

@Ant_17: I thought venom was better than the critics made it out to be. Definitely didn’t hate it. Sony and Disney will come to a compromise eventually but it won’t be a 50/50 split like Disney wants.

To be fair, Sony got the Spidey movie rights for real cheap back in 1998:

Why Sony Only Bought The Rights To Spider-Man From Marvel

Sony only paid $7 million for the Spidey movie rights. Furthermore, Marvel offered almost their entire line-up (including the Avengers, Iron Man, Thor, Black Panther, Ant-Man, etc.) to Sony for a measly $25 million. To which a Sony boss responded: "Nobody gives a shit about any of the other Marvel characters."

In hindsight, both Marvel and Sony are regretting their decisions.

From Marvel's perspective, back in 1998, Marvel was just a comic/cartoon company, not the box office behemoth they've now become. They couldn't anticipate just how huge they'd become, so they greatly under-valued their IPs, and sold their biggest character Spider-Man for only $7 million.

And from Sony's perspective, back in 1998, they didn't anticipate just how huge the Avengers, Iron-Man and other Marvel characters would become, so they didn't care about the other Marvel characters, which they could've brought for only $25 million.

That's partly why Marvel (and its owner Disney) and Sony have such an uneasy relationship, because both lost out on a missed opportunity back then. Especially Sony, which missed out on a huge opportunity to pretty much own the MCU.

But regardless of what happened back then, I agree it's about time other studios, including Sony, stand-up to Disney. They're far too greedy and monopolistic for their own good. Whenever a single company has a monopoly, that's never a good thing for any industry. There needs to be balanced competition, in order to keep an industry healthy.

How anyone takes Disney's side on this is beyond me. This is the company who once they couldn't get X-men rights decided to basically kill every worthy X-men. Then they wouldn't even allow Capcom to put them in a video game. They made the Fantastic 4 vanish because they didn't have the movie rights. They are the defenition of petty.

As for the game rights you can gurantee the Spiderman game was probably a 3 game contract so it's doubtful it will effect it anytime soon. Regardless Sony made the most successful Marvel game ever. But as Disney has proven if they can't leverage the character expect Spiderman to disappear in everything but movies because that's how Disney operates. Ideally I would like Sony to sell their entire movie division and buy more game studios. Possibly make a deal to make games off more Marvel properties.

@r-gamer: I personally don't like Disney has become and I sure as hell don't like'em for ruining my favorite all time fantasy, Star Wars. It's true Disney has been greedy but at the same time, if they didn't back up Marvel going with MCU, we would never ever gotten to where we are now with Endgame. Never thought in my life time I would see just about every Marvel characters for the final battle.
