Keep in mind that I am not even using any HD texture mods for RTCW, and there are HD texture mods available. Nail in the coffin for id Tech 5? I think so!!
It's the same issue that rage had.
Id tech 5 sucks ass when it comes to texture quality, I think Carmack really screwed up with that original design.
I play games for fun not to look at the ground and the bottom line is this game is fun
Who said it wasn't fun and what does that even have to do with this? I am not arguing the game isn't fun. Being a fun game doesn't excuse PS2 quality textures.
RTCW has crisp textures but they look cartoony now, like a childs drawing of a brick wall.
ID Tech 5 is a pile of shit though for sure, pretty certain the way textures are stored is what's causing all the PC issues too because if I try to downsample (which would use more VRAM) that's when I hit issues. It's probably the stupid megatextures, they're a nice idea but in practice they clearly don't work very well, even on top end current hardware.
@cfisher2833: Because I'm tired of this nit picky bullshit, look at this board and at all the resolution this textures that fps blah blah blah...seems like the enjoyment of games has been trumped by this nonsense

Nah, you're just in the wrong forum. People come here specifically to argue about anything they can find, and always have. The Games Discussion Forum might restore your faith in gamers a little.

How is releasing a fun game a nail in something's coffin? Minecraft looks like an N64 threw up on a set of Legos, but it is still making people rich enough to buy golden video game consoles.

Then play Shadow Warrior. Great gameplay and cool dude graphics to boot.

Wouldn't surprise me tbh. I know they're completely different engines, but I recently did a project in UDK involving a single massive mega texture, and while it sped up production and allowed some neat stuff to be done, it was a nightmare to optimise solely down to the texture. Wouldn't surprise me if it was a similar case here.

Minecraft was also developed by one guy in Java, not by a huge team with millions of dollars in resources using a supposed "next gen" engine.

This. People complaining about arguments in system wars need to pack up and leave if they're going to get annoyed so easily. Quite frankly the arguing is what makes this board so much more fun than any other.

It still looks like an N64 threw up on a set of Legos, and it still sold like hot cakes. The reason? It is a blast.
If a game is a blast and looks ugly, you buy it and have fun. If a game is no fun but looks pretty, you watch the cut scenes on youtube when you are too intoxicated to play games. Gameplay trumps the heck out of presentation.
Friend bought the game for the PC. Didn't like it so he borrowed me his Steam account...
Anyway, the game looks good, and it runs surprisingly well on 1080p Ultra settings on my PC. Yeah, it has some shitty textures, but it also has some "wow" moments. I'd give graphics an 8/10. And I honestly didn't pay much attention to ground textures. But I took some as an example. Keep in mind Gamespot lowers the image quality for some reason...
The upper image is the ground texture, while the image below is a "pretty" one.
Also, cool easter egg:
The game looks much better in motion.

From those screenshots it seems that some low res textures have been slapped on complex geometry, such a waste.

No, it really doesn't, because when it's in motion you get horrible aliasing crawling and texture pop-in. Even in those photos, you can clearly see the aliasing. The game does look good in some spots though, and the lighting in particular is very nice.

Well I didn't notice any issues with textures so far. The game looks fine to me in motion.
I see your point and it is annoying that it is 2014 and yet textures are still taking a back seat. I know there are various reasons for that but its still sad.
Well, you wanted shitty textures. Here's the shittiest one I found so far... Looks worse than Quake 3 lol
hahahahahaha! Yeah, I only noticed a texture that poor once so far, and it was underneath a cement outcropping in the tutorial area.
Sorry, but I'm not seeing how flat copy and pasted textures are better then natural somewhat low res textures.
Played a bit of it. Pretty fun so far but the beginning is crap. Looks fine to me especially in motion. One low res texture spot doesn't mean the entire game looks like that.
ID Tech 5 is a terrible engine, it looks like really early Unreal Engine 3 games like Medal of Honor Airborne or Frontlines: Fuel of War. Those probably had higher res textures actually. But instead of a 6 gig install its a 50 gig install and it runs way worse. Texture popin is constant especially in confined areas.

you are aware EVERY game has texture issues
