Of all systems

Im pretty sure this one is going to break records

it pulls in 10 million subscriptions per month and sells at retail for full price of 50 dollars

can any game on 360 ps3 or wii even compete?

not even casual wii sports can compare to the money wow rakes in a single 6 months

is it over for ps3/360? are they finished and has pc finally broken down who is the real king?

oh and can i say cinematic king because yeah that cinematic blew every other cgi ive seen outa the water including movies like avatar

i'm a fan, i don't want to play anymore but still, it was a great game.

stomping all over the alliance in wintergasp bg was some of the most fun times i ever had in any game.

one of the most consistently popular? Sure

but most profitable? I dont know...Blizzard actually earns their subscriptino costs by providing really good support 24/7...they release constant and free updates, often with free content such as dungeons; over the years, we have have received enough content to justify an expansion or two (if this were Everquest). What I am saying is that it seems Blizzard reinvests a lot of the money they make in WoW, so I am not sure how much they actually profit from it.

A lot, I am sure...but as much as we suspect? Problably no where close.

It must make insane money I'm sure. I wonder if its a permanent type success though. Will it fall off eventually? Who knows.

My gf and I play wow and easily have time to do other things, like playing our Wii, PS3, 360, other computer games, and plenty of time after that to do heroic bedroom quests.

So to all the haters, WoW can easily be enjoyed without inhibiting your life and is a very well made, enjoyable game. Fin.

70% of activision's income comes "non-console games" which more or less is saying that almost all of it comes from WoW.

Just playing the game and playing it competitively are two different things entirely. I quit because it is literally impossible to play it at a high level with a full time job, a wife to keep happy and other hobbies that involve leaving the house.

"Highest level raids" is again completely different from playing the game competitively, anyone can log on once a week and do a mindless 10 man for an hour. Did you push content and compete with other guilds for server firsts? Did you ever get a decent arena title?

I didn't realize you were identifying yourself in the top .01 percent of everyone that plays and enjoys wow. I'm sorry that that is the only way you played wow because there is lot to have fun with and not spend insane amounts of time playing.

I don't find grinding mobs and quests or logging onto a crap character occasionally to be fun, let alone worth $15 a month.

Then wow is definitely not for you and nearly all other games I'm sure for you are not fun because having fun in a game to you is apparently playing for 18 hours straight just to be on top of a leaderboard. Doesn't sound like a happy gamer to me.

This would be true for multiplayer games if they required as much time as WoW to be competitive, but I don't find that many do, not by a longshot.

My whole point in all these posts are basically that just because you factor yourself into the higher echelon of competitive players doesn't mean that Cataclysm or WoW as a whole is not one of the most well crafted MMO/RPG's around and deserving of praise.

I completly agree that it is, I was just making the point that when you say you play the game and still have time for a million other things, that is probably because you are not taking the game seriously at all. Some people don't enjoy playing like that, so they can't fit the game into their lives.

I'm not new to the MMORPG genre; aside from EVE every MMO is too similar to another and WoW is just the best class based MMO out there. We need more skill based MMOs like SWG pre-NGE

Not rpg king, not even close.

The trailer for Cataclysm is nice but it's not even the best in it's genre, the two old republic trailers easily beat it.

It might break PC records, but it won't sell as much as Mario games or Grand theft Auto games.

You could call it Money Maker King though, if anyone even cares.

Bit hard to include a game in here that so many people are addicted to. It becomes more a NEED than a want, and the only reason that might prevent them from camping out overnight to get a copy is that they might be away from the game too long.

No doubt it'll sell a boatload, but not as much as some other franchises. Not sales King. In fact, I'd bet it sells less than Lich King, which iirc sold less than Burning Crusade, which naturally sold less than WoW.

RPG King? Matter of preference, the majority of gamers both inside and outside of SW would disagree. A stronger argument could be made for MMO king (sales), but enjoyment-wise it's still gonna depend on the gamer.

Money maker King? You're getting warmer there, of course you'd be talking about the GAME World of Warcraft and not just the EXPANSION Cataclysm. The SW "List" might refer to expansions as games, but come on now, we know better. They have to be making a ton off those subscriptions though. I know half are Chinese and Blizzard only makes a fraction of what it does elsewhere, but it's still a mountain of cash. Like Scrooge McDuck Money!

Why even bother with WoW if you feel this way? You missed the boat son, you should've been playing Everquest.

It's going to make so much money. My only question is will there be another expansion? Like who is left to kill in the Warcraft Universe anymore? They pretty much cleaned up every essential character that survived TFT.

Shoaka

It actually might have beaten GTA in sales.

12 million active subs is not TOTAL subs.

As for the trailer=Visually (graphical realism)-It blows TOR trailers out of water.

The level of details is just incredibly high while in the TOR trailers, cloth have been better, human models could have had better details, the backgrounds look like low-budget films.

Cataclysm, Sc2 cinematics, Lich King Cinematic might be shorter and have less action than TOR trailers but their animations are much more complex and their graphics are on a higher level of details.

Ask any CG artists in any CG forums.

PS: Unlike Games, In CG trailers, GRAPHICS ARE MORE IMPORTANT than DIRECTION, ACTIONS.

WoW is possibly the only amazing RPG I will ever pass up simply because I know it will absorb my life completely. So yes it may be the king. But to me the king of RPG's will always be held by the Shin Megami games, and Shining Force.

WoW has actually been designed to where it doesn't take that much time out of your day. You can literally play the game by joining a guild, signing in during scheduled weekly raids ( you can only do a raid dungeon once per week), sign in once per day to do a quick daily dungeon and some daily quests (maybe 3 hours if you're doing everything you can do in a day), and then you're finished. As far as leveling....some people have it down to a single week long grind, some people can do it in much less. What's frustrating about all this, for me at least, is that means you're really limited in the amount of progress you can run through in a day/week, and it makes a game that could take a few weeks/months last through seasons and if you let it, years. What you have to do is play the game but avoid getting rolled up in trade chat debates, farming .01% droprate mounts, and grinding 8 toons to level 80. Just pick a toon, level it to 80, and focus on raid content. What I found to be especially fun was to explore all the old world raids, because you can get them all done in a week. There's a lot of fun stuff to do in the game as long as you're not a rabid loser. There are literally dozens of 10-25 man raids, dozens of 5 man dungeons (most with heroic modes), and dozens of huge zones, probably thousands of quests to complete. The game is massive, has a huge amount of content, and mounds upon mounds of lore to drill through. To experience the real value of the game, you don't have to log on more than maybe 10 hours a week, total.

lol, did you play in a BG after patch 4.0 hit? If that wasn't the most imbalanced thing ....I'm not sure Season 9 can hold a candle to that. There were huge bugs, big balance issues that caused Blizzard to release hotfixes that week, nothing was really designed for Wrath gear and stat levels, and Blizzard admitted as much. And if you want to see complaining threads, go head over to the Warrior class forums and see if you can find the patch 4.0 backlog. Pages and pages of it.
