World of Warcraft has been around since 2004, and one expansion pack later, the games popularity has grown even bigger - which is shocking. With most MMORPG's, the fan-base slowly becomes smaller and smaller until only the most hard of the hardcore fill the games servers. This isn't the case with World of Warcraft. The fan-base is getting bigger by the hour, and people still log on daily.

Thanks to a boatload of patches and tweaks released every so often, the game has been polished to a mirror sheen ten times over. The games interface and small design choices are subtle, but make the overall experience that much better. Going on a huge raid, plundering a cave with friends, completing that long quest - thats' a kind of feeling that just isn't translated in other games. Not to mention other MMORPG's/RPG's. The game just plays well, you constantly feel rewarded and are entertained with everything and all that you do in this world - it's actually kind of inspiring.

Sure, the graphics are starting to show their rough edges, but the games lighting and art is still a wonder to look at. Walking through one of the hundreds of beautiful vistas still fills you with that feeling of "Oh my god, I'm in a different place here". For a game with such age, it's pretty amazing that it is able to do that.

I am positive that many rabid RPG fans will strongly disagree, but I wanted to give a shout-out to one of best MMORPG's around nonetheless.

Agreed. WoW is pretty close to timeless and it wouldn't surprise me if Blizzard did a graphical overhaul down the road.

Couldn't agree with you more, and couldn't have said it better. There's a reason why so many people are playing it, it's probably the best game to come out this decade, by a long shot. One of the biggest reasons it's so successful is it's community features, which are just unmatched in any game to date. You always feel like you're part of something, and finding people to play is never a problem. This is Blizzard after all, one of the best developers to grace the earth.

It was my most anticipated game last year, but to be honest, it was released far too early. They are just finally patching in things that should have been in game for launch. It's a shame, they should have launched this game this Halloween, not last. Either way, I still played through the game's storyline, although crashed so many times I lost track. It was a real heart breaker to be honest, and haven't played it in a couple of months. I built a new rig over the Holidays and didn't bother reinstalling it, I figure I'm going to wait a bit until they keep patching it up.

I was really surprised, along with just about everyone else at how Flagship, the Diablo guys for crying out loud, could have released this game in this fashion. Apparently at GDC, they were supposed to talk about what went wrong, but I'm not sure if they canceled or not. I would say, in a few months, when the game gets a few more updates and fixes, you could give it a try, but I would ask around first, but than again, WoW is really all ya need :P

I understand that I just do not see the appeal of MMORPGS, I can see why other people might like them though.

Altough its been alittle while since mmo's got popular(EQ), the genre is very much still in infancy and has alot of headroom to offer new things in the future. I just hope WoW's huge success doesnt cripple the genre's ability to evolve.

What I hope is that the money blizzards making from this game does not make them forget about their other fans an stop them from expanding on their other universes, but the coming release of SC2 has decreased my worry of this.

I've played WoW since launch, most people say the game isn't for them without trying are silly. I have seen many people get hooked people who said the game looked boring and bland when I was playing it.... the addiction is never that bad, for the most part.. there will always be exceptions in everything.. most players aren't really addicted and have lives.... well maybe they are addicted as in not being able to quit.. but not enough so that it affects thier life. I've quit WoW for some time now but it's definitely a very good game.

Very true and I agree. Most of the haters and naysayers have never played it and just go along with the usual mantra of "Wow is sucking people's lives away" BS. It's not hard to control yourself, it's a game where you get to hang out with thousands of people at any given time, so naturally it's a very social interaction. It's social aspect of the game is what really seperates it from the crowd, not only giving you a quality Blizzard RPG, but mixed in with an absolute massive and very supportive community.

I'm fairly new to WoW, even after all these years, and I can't beleive I never jumped on board before. It's just an excellent game.

Doubtfull, that would be at least a 4GB DL, they would have to almost rewrite the entire game.

honestly, I still think Starcraft, Warcraft, and Diablo still compete with games sold today, the battlechest versions of these can be found in any store that sells games even today...when Starcraft 2 was announced, it actually boosted the Starcraft sales all the way to the PC charts.
