Why am I not surprised Smash is in second place?
I would say Naruto. I think they serve their purpose well for fans of the show looking for a flashy, stylish game that emulates the visuals of the anime but from my experience with some of the games, they aren't competitive or deep.
From what I've played, it's probably Mortal Kombat 10 and Killer Instinct.

- Stupid block button than "back", which would make more sense
- Super moves last far too long in animations
- Mistakes "convoluted" with depth
- God awful PC port
- Terrible business practice
- Seems to be pretty imbalanced
- Zoning can't properly be dealt with like Street Fighter (superior game)
- Other things not made up yet

Killer Instincts problem is pretty simple, auto-combos turn it into a QTE that gets old after an hour. Apparently they patched it in for accessibility, and basically ruined their own game. MVC: I and DBZF auto-combo system is far better as it's accessible but not overpowered. Here, they add it in without even the option to turn it off in MP.
The mechanic itself is mostly just annoying, rather play the game without it, it actually has some pretty cool character mechanics, which you can't really explore because ULTRA COMBO, becomes the end of all ends. A game I wanted to like, but couldn't, because they smeared shit all over it.

They couldn't even (or understand) the juxtaposition of Mileena having miss-world body/face-features set against knee-jerk bestial shock value to confuse the players weener. They even ruined that because the artists behind it are apparently as dumb as a rock, not comprehending what made the character interesting in the face place.

The only one that I’ve never played from that list is Narotu so I have no knowledge of those games. The only Dragon Ball game that I’ve played is Dragon Ball FighterZ which I love but have no history with the rest.
The rest though I have played pretty much all of the games in their franchises. While I do pretty much enjoy them all I would say that the Virtua Fighter games are probably my least favourite. That lack of any real storyline in it along with characters that I largely find uninteresting are the biggest factors for me in not spending as much time with them as I do with other fighters.

Though I think Naruto for example is worse, I agree with your complaints about MKX and KI. MKX really sucks compared to 9. Some character designs were horrible. I feel the same way about KI too. Seems like an awesome fighting game, but auto combos made me get a bad taste after playing it. Autocombos in online games completely ruins the online.

I'd put FighterZ ahead of anything from SC or Tekken if that was the only DBZ fighting game, but there is a lot of junk in the series.

Have to agree here. Sure, the female characters had big tits, but their faces were a bit too man-ish. Injustice 2 is the first game Netherrealm has made with chicks that actually look like chicks.

I voted MK, but it's really just NRS games in general, IJ has all of the same issues.
That team still can't nail simple core tried and true concepts that were worked out back in the mid 90s. Forget the FG specific stuff, surface level action game concepts that have been providing satisfying game feel for decades are still lost on them. Simple things like proper hitstop and hitspark range from weak to completely absent. Animations are limp, poor at communicating proper tells to the player, and are just unexciting to watch. The visual language is all over the place, but the animations are especially bad for fighting games.
It's funny, because it's actually similar to the Shaq Fu issue in which the animations aren't (usually) bad, but in the context of an action based game, a fighting game no less, they completely miss the mark. Animation should be there to serve the action, serve the combat engines design, serve as an intuitive communicator to the player. Instead, it seems like the combat system designers and animators at NRS have never spoken to each other. Like two separate teams working in a vacuum. The animators are just creating what looks cool to them (and even then, still lulz, as simple ease-in/fast-out, a very basic animation concept, is still poorly implemented).
Sound design is in the same boat as the animation, but not in the mood to ramble on further.
And again, most of that is very much surface level, gets much worse under the hood.
It's a shame as I derive no pleasure from bashing these games. I wish I could enjoy them. I have strong nostalgia for the series. Always loved the character designs, the stages, the over the top violence gimmick, and just the grittier audio visual style of MK in general. I just wish the series could be handled by better game designers. I think the Killer Instinct devs could really nail a MK game.

I really like DOA for having a good counter system. Countering usually has some meter that limits it's use, or requires timing too accurate for mere mortals like myself to use effectively (Street Fighter 3, I'm looking at you). ^ ^ I agree with this not because I like boobs but because it's true. Part of the awesomeness of Mileena came from the fact she had a sexy body but her face was nightmarish.
By getting rid of that they diminished the character.

@uninspiredcup: Yup, it's not even close. MKX, while it's the best animating neatherrealms game to date can't even remotely come close to Capcom fighters. SFV looks AMAZING in motion, fantastic animations, great art style, great character design, etc. MKX (and all MK games really) have such a stiff and almost painful anation style to them.
Never got into King of fighters. Always thought it was a poor mans street fighter.
Originally it was. But the team aspect where you are essentially selecting a unchangeable deck of cards, and SNKs ridiculously good 2D work make it more a competitor to SF than the other 2D fighters.
The jump to 3D was unfortunate, it looks mediocre compared to past titles, but it's still absolutely a rock solid game, that had a far better launch than SFV with a huge roster and more modes. Obviously with SFV: AE that's a different case now.
