Every CoD has had an awful story. Borderlands was really bad too. Crysis 2 was a sorry excuse for a story. Sniper Ghost Warrior was laughably bad, and so was GTA4. DA2 was supposed to be bad, but I never bothered to play the whole thing.

No way Mw2. I thought the story in Mw2 is stronger than many other fps. Yeah the bar has been set really low :p Yeah, Mw2 dosen't have the best story but then again most fps's are pretty lacking in a good campaign. Take battlefield bad company 2's campaign, or farcry2.i think zelda or mario once you hit the end we all know it's gannon or bowser.all CoD,dark sector.RE4-5
Ha, I remember that, it was a decent Murder Mystery and intrigued me, but as soon as Lucas started beating up cops and doing backflips......Worst story in a game that actually attempted a story...I'd give it to Indigo Prophecy from what I've played. It went from interesting murder mystery to pants-on-head retarded festival of kung-fu and Tron aliens.

Open your mind a little. It went crazy, but at least it was semi-interesting! Take battlefield bad company 2's campaign, or farcry2. I'm not really the biggest fan of the Halo series, but Halo 3, ODST and Reach are MUCH better than MW2 in terms of story. Bioshock had a good story as well, with System Shock 2 being one of the best. Dude, don't just look at military shooters. There are tons of other FPSes in the market.
modern warfare 2, apparently theres characters in this series that people care about, i didn't even know mw1 and 2 had a connected story.

[QUOTE="Mr_Cumberdale"]Well for one that tried, Half-life. The story-telling was awesome but the story was dull.jtm33A bit unfair, see it in context. It was an FPS game released in 1998. It kinda was a big deal. I agree that it's story as it stands today is poor though.
HL2 is the best story in an FPS game today. There are so many things involved it's insane. It's not finished yet though, so who knows what's in store for it.

why do people hate on MW2's story? its entertaining, it doesnt drag its feet, and it has some good voice actors (not all). it does its job. what are you expecting story-wise out of a game that is essentially the video game equivalent to a popcorn movie?
Because most popcorn movies blow, in fact almost everything that's come out of Hollywood in the last 5 years has been pure crap. Also, this: http://www.gamesradar.com/modern-warfare-2s-glaring-plot-holes-exposed/why do people hate on MW2's story? its entertaining, it doesnt drag its feet, and it has some good voice actors (not all). it does its job. what are you expecting story-wise out of a game that is essentially the video game equivalent to a popcorn movie?

I don't think people hate the story, but saying that it has the best story as a shooter is laughable. There are tons of other fps with better stories. I know, I'm just... saiyan. :P But Half Life is tied into HL2, so it's not like it can't be counted as one.[QUOTE="arbitor365"]I don't think people hate the story, but saying that it has the best story as a shooter is laughable. Haven't played the Darkness, so I can't make a judgement. I never said it has one of the best storylines. that was someone else.
and actually I think halo reach had one of the worst storylines of any big-name FPS this gen. especially if you compare it to the book. the characters of the spartans are completely dull and emotionless. there are countless plotholes, especially surrounding the circumstances of each character's death (ruining what little impact they could have had).
the thing that really gets me about halo reach is that it could have had a great story that fleshed out the halo universe and it just didnt. and also its "bad" in a boring way. which is the worst way for me. I can forgive a sloppy story in an FPS game as long as it at least attempts to entertain me.
In no particular order:
Final Fantasy XIII (the half hearted, atrocious story is actually a bigger sin than the linearity)
MW2 (I didn't mind the story in MW1, but this was just nonsensical, disjointed garbage)
MGS4 (most embarrassing dialogue ever written and the worst MGS plot by a mile)
Bayonetta (even though I loved the game)
Gears of War 2 (Dom crying after a wife we never learn anything about. The tunnels created by the Locust's best friend the giant worm. A deadly serious tone. Horrid...)
Dark Sector (simply awful)
How come everytime somebody makes a "worst of" thread, people almost never pick the actual worst ones? Have you guys heard of Borderlands? Hell, I'm sure there's even games out there that make Borderland's story look good.

None of those are even close to being the worst.
I think a lot of people are mentioning games that seem to try and have a good story. If I remember borderlands didn't really focus on the story, it was just there to give you a reason to do things. How come everytime somebody makes a "worst of" thread, people almost never pick the actual worst ones? Because it barely even tried. I personally wouldnt list it despite it being awful. I think the bigger offenders -should- be the games that make a good effort at delivering a plot and has a foundation that relies on a narrative; because it's something substantial to the product that's worth a 'critique'.How come everytime somebody makes a "worst of" thread, people almost never pick the actual worst ones? That's not how I define worst. Worst would be a story that gets absolutely nothing right. Borderlands was the only game this gen I played where there was literally no saving grace to the story. Everything about it was god awful. GTA4, Gears 2, MGS4, MW2, and whatever other game most people mentioned, those stories did some things right, like for example, actually make a little bit of sense.

TC should have been more specific then if that's what he/she meant. When somebody asks me what's the worst, I think of the absolute, bottom of the garbage pile, WORST.
