Would Skyrim win GOTY if it came out this year?

As most of us already know, Skyrim won GOTY 2011 here. That decision did not come without criticism by users who said there were more deserving games elsewhere, and that Skyrim wasn't even worthy of winning the best of its genre, beating the likes of Dark Souls and TWII. However, it won, and that's history.

2012 has also taken a beating around here for being a terrible year of gaming. Despite a new console being released and some blockbuster games coming out and breaking records, this year may be the year of the downloadable game. The Walking Dead is a clear frontrunner with Journey tagging along for the awards circuit, certainly getting some gamers riled up who do not consider downloadable games as a part of a system's library.

So all in all, would Skyrim be able to contend with the year of 2012? Is it a bad game against a good year? Is it a good game against a bad year? What's your opinon?

Easily since there were really no stand out games this year.

Wouldn't no. Didn't play. But I'll probably end up arguing that Skyrim shouldn't have even won last year. And last year was a pretty damn good year, even if some high profile sequels did struggle to live up to high expectations(Uncharted 3/Gears of War 3)

2012 was not a terrible year. And probably, yeah. 2011 was much stronger than this year, so Skyrim would have won much more easily.

A beta should never win GOTY. That's why last year's awards were a joke to me.

In a year filled with world-class, high scoring games like Forza Horizon, Halo 4, The Witcher 2 (again), Spelunky, Trials Evolution, The Walking Dead, Far Cry 3, Borderlands 2, and Journey?

No way in hell.

Dunno. I don't even know what GameSpot's Game of the Year is yet, so I don't even know what its "toughest competition" is yet.

I personally enjoy Guild Wars 2 much MUCH more than I did Skyrim, but that's just me.

God, I hope not.

But considering the industry's enormous hard-on for Bethesda games, probably.

It shouldn't have won last year, to be honest.

It gets annoying, the Skyrim hate. I've seen so much hate I wonder if it actually is a good game because I've heard NOTHING good about the game from ANYONE at this point. It's like a constant SNIPER attack left and right; bashing one game praising another. Surprisingly, though, in instances like these I always tend to hate the loved games and tend to love the hated games.

Ex: Metro.

Anyways, how's Max Payne?

I don't just hate Skyrim, though. I hate all Bethesda games. Equally. :D Pretty damn awesome. A little dated, but still very playable.

Put less stock into SW posts, and try the game yourself. Because as you just pointed out that's how you end up disliking good games, because all you heard was "Oh man that game is so good I orgasmed harder than meg ryan did in when harry met sally". And end up loving a poorly executed game because all you heard was "that game gave my mother maleria".

Just saying. From what I gathered it's that it carries a lot of similar issues Oblivion had and Elder Scrolls has always had on a combat front and dungeon design front. As a toy box or environment to explore it's always fun, and if you enjoyed Oblivion you will love your time with Skyrim.

Pretty much this. If you like The Elder Scrolls (especially Obivion, because it is miles better than Oblivion), you'll love Skyrim. But I just really hate the way Bethesda designs games, and I have yet to play a Bethesda game that hasn't bored me to tears.

I guess, I just have this weird problem and mentality of "following the leader." I've really got to fix this because it's probably destroying my enjoyment of so many games. It's probably one of the reasons why I have this weird mentality to like hold indie games on such high levels and mainstream games at garbage/trash level because people are just f@pping to them and making claims of them being better than the rest so I want to see if that is true so I raise expectations higher for indie and lower for mainstream even though it will be evident that I will like them.

That or maybe I should stop taking a guy on the interent who is king of a fourm page that (in the big picture) has absolutly no significance whatsoever to the gaming industry or anything else.

of course, with The Witcher 2, Dark Souls, Xenoblade Chronicles, GEOW 3, Batman Arkham city, last year was a rather strong year, Skyrim would have close to no competition this year, not saying there're no good games this year, but best games aren't as recognized, recognized games aren't as acclaimed.

That's just it, my taste I feel is now treding more towards the "bro gamer" (I guess) side of the gaming spectrum and...well...they aren't really the most well liked in the gaming community. I know I shouldn't care but gaming at the moment is just my side fun hobby and I enjoy going onto fourms and such...I don't know. When I see a comment like "Casuals are destroying the industry," or "Fvck casuals," it just makes me feel weird knowing my tastes.

As for games that I've been thinking about getting: Black Ops 2 (mostly for Zombie mode but I've been looking at the campaign and I hate to admit it looks pretty good), Fallout3/New Vegas, Hitman Absolution, Half-Life 1/2, Far Cry 3, Guld Wars 2, GTA IV, Crysis 2, and Dishonored off the top of my head.

Lot of glitches and lots of bugs. It started out almost unplayable on the PS3 from everything I read. It made me decide to wait til the game is $5 on steam.

I think so. There is no competition this year at all. Though I didn't agree with it winning last year. The game was just a buggy mess. I don't understand how it got the award. It's like a beta got GOTY. I believe Arkham City should have won.

Yes, easily. Skyrim is fantastic and anyone who doesn't agree can go back to playing Nintendo, sports games or Counter Strike knock-offs.

Most. Any less is stretching it. Especially since you find Bethesda games as dull as I do, which is what this is about. :P

Ridiculous I loved my no purchase of Skyrim. Best bethesda gaming experience of all time when measuring how my time and money was used on the game.

I love my no purchase of it as well. :o

PC gamers love to point out the flaws in Skyrim without pointing to any modern examples that do compete with it. No, do not compare just any RPG but one similar to Skyrim. They play it down so we think, "Gee, they must have so many better titles," but they don't. They never bring up any because they don't have any others with the production values, scale, or impressive host of activities. I don't like the game that much. I only played it for 30 hours (according to my save file, which may not include deaths), but it was a great game and doesn't deserve to be stomped on just because you guys had nothing left to do after 300 hours.

[QUOTE="Goyoshi12"] Oh, God, don't do that. Always put your taste first. What games are you thinking of?DarkLink77

Can't really go wrong with any of those. Save for Crysis 2. It's kind of disappointing.

Crysis 2 is still better than Black Ops 2. Black Ops was way better than Black Ops 2 and that's pretty sad that I can say that considering I hate the CoD games.

I trusted your's. You seem to know your $#!+ on games on what's good and what isn't...it's just that once I got some of the games that you disliked quite a lot and began to like them....well...I wondering about my taste in gaming.

Wow, ive read this whole exchange and goyoshi, this little community here is the place where we dishrag games left and right and pick on the smallest of issues and blow them up to be more than they are... I seriously think youd be hard pressed to find one in ten gamers that looks you in the eye and seriously tells you they hated skyrim... its not sexy to gush over a game like a bieber fan thus you get more critical comments than anything else... please for the love of god dont hold any one persons opinion higher than your own.... u can still respect opinions and people for their different tastes but dont put one of us yuckle heads over yourself. Game however you want...
