Not really, but the competition has been nothing but good for gamers.
What condition would PSN be if it wasn't competing with Xbox live for example?
And one console dominating isn't good for publishers and developers. How many great games got lost on the PS1 and 2 because of how saturated their market was. There is such a thing as too many games. This leads to losses of good small developers. Plus competition keeps royalties down and deals up for developers and publishers. Devs and Publishers would rather release their games over multiple systems than one.
No competition leads to a 'my way or the highway' attitude from a company, which is good for no one. How many times has Sony or Nintendo (when they were in that position) been able to say 'well if you don't want to do that or pay this'.
The popularity of the 360 has been a great thing for gaming this gen. The fact that Playstation has to fight neck and neck is great for gaming.
Right now, you're seeing a Sony who has lost its arrogance which is great for PS fans and 360 fans. PS fans get more attention and better and better deals from Sony (in terms of content, games and quality and whatnot) and 360 fans get more because MS are constantly on their toes.
