Yes Skyrim mood has hit me and it got me thinking. It would be awesome to have a huge game like this but set in the lord of the rings lore. Its a type of game that badly needs to be created and done right. Its a huge task yeah but if it was done right the people who made it would get huge praise i think.

I'm not big into RPGs but I watched 2 of the LOTR films again he other week and there is massive potential there.

Joint collaboration between Rocksteady and (old)Bioware would be brilliant.

As long as it wasn't an MMO, I'd be happy.

LOTRO was basically that, although I guess something done in the style of an Elder Scrolls game might be even better.

There's a mod that aims to do this, it's hopefully going to be released for Skyrim once the modding kit releases.

Definitely not an MMO. Those have no atmosphere and are very flat most of the time.

I've never liked the idea of an MMO full stop.

I prefer having a focused narrative and actual characters that are fleshed out and unique, rather than one you could create yourself with pink hair and a mini-skirt, or whatever.

LOTR is, like, sooolast decade but I'd still buy it.:P

it would depend I personally wouldn't want to play one during the saurun 1st or second war would be kind of boring I guess before leading up to the 1st war but not the second since most of the elves then are reclusive elitist jack asses at that time unlike the first war.

But yeah id get one.

Yes. I was so excited when The White Council was being developed(basically an Oblivion-esque LOTR game) but when EA canned it due to management problems I lost all hope.

No. I am done with LOTR since the movies, and skyrim gave a deathblow.
Maybe in a few years.
My elf/orc fantasy has reached maximum capacity.
Hopefully I will be able to still enjoy Zelda SS (which is not completely standard fantasy I suppose).

It would be nice to have Lotr game that plays like Skyrim, but what would be even better is a Game Of Thrones game that plays like Skyrim /drool. Going through some of the snowy areas in Skyrim SCREAM Game Of Thrones

A high quality, well made one i would definitely buy just as long as you don't play as any of the characters in the movies as that would ruin the fun but the amount of enemies and vaired locations would definitely be great to play about in, i'd like to kill a Balrog.

Well, reviews have specifically said that Skyrim somehow manages to not fit that mold. This is coming from someone that doesn't care for open-world/sandbox games. I'm debating picking up Skyrim after watching Giantbombs review.

That's basically why I said it. Cos a lot of Skyrim is lifted almost from LOTR. Whiterun even has a horse symbol on it. Also Riverwood=rivendell (Not a place of elves just the name) There are huge similarities

LOTRO?dramaybaz

I know that exists but let's face it, it sucks. I want a focused story driven LOTR game based around the mythology of middle earth. Not a copy of the movies. A story around the silmarillion or something like that. Like william said. A different part of the lore. MMO's are disjointed and just a pile of stupid sidequests with no thread of connection.

I think you got it wrong, as JRR draws a LOT of inspiration from mythology.

MMORPGs are a different beast compared to single player games, you're looking at it wrong. Think about having a sense of progression once you play a good one. Don't think the quests/story are the main aspect, the thing with these games is playing with friends (including friends that you make in-game), joining a guild, maybe start your own guild later on, etc. Making a ladder of progression, goals, for your self to achieve in these games is part of the entertainment factor.

Anyone here remember that huge LOTR total conversion that was in development for Morrowind? That thing was ready to be released to the public before Tolkien Enterprises sent them a cease & desist. It was call (something) Middle Earth or Middle Earth (something). Can't remember.

No. ES is a better gaming series. LOTOR was a great series for books/movies but doesn't translate that well to games.

I'd like to see a well crafted Middle-Earth RPG (sorry, but 'Lord of the Rings Online' doesn't cut it for me, don't care from MMOs), but the War of the Ring-era is a bit played out. They should go with a period that's barely, if at all, touched. Maybe even something set during the Second Age (which Tolkien himself barely touched upon).

How does Middle-Earth not translate well into games? Pretty much all fantasy created in the past 50 or 60 years, be it books, movies, games, whatnot, takes from Tolkien.

No, the LOTR universe would translate better because its not just the ring era the lore is absolutely huge. Its just been done horribly in games so far. It translates bad because devs don't know how to translate it to a game or what jind of a game they want to do. We've had RPGs, Hack n' slashers, MMOs etc. and they're always all over the place. They need to really dig deep into the lore and produce something "similar" to Elder Scrolls which if done better would beat it IMO

This. ES wouldn't exist without Tolkeins influence. We wouldn't have orcs and elves and dwarves etc. in the same sense of what they are today. It's not just a coincidence that all elves in games now are good at archery and dwarves all good at smithing. Most of it takes from JRR

We need a First Age mod for Skyrim. I know it would probably take even longer than the Black Mesa Source project, but it would be amazing.
