So what is a MMO.. is it just abunch of people going around fighting each other and levling up with a lot of people in the same match or something?[QUOTE="Helghastextreme"] So what is a MMO.. is it just abunch of people going around fighting each other and levling up with a lot of people in the same match or something?Mograine
Uhhhh...there are no matches in MMOs, the world is always online.
Wow, TC. MMO understanding fail. How are you gonna come in here and say, "So what if it IS an MMO?" and then NOT know what makes an MMO an MMO.
MMO = Massive Multiplayer Online. As mentioned, persistent worlds and PvP (peer vs. peer or player vs. player) are the big draw, as well as looting, leveling up, and the ever-present social networking aspect. This is the reason games like World Of Warcraft and Everquest did so well. The world, much like the one in which we live, is constantly alive and evolving. The world goes on, whether you play or not. It's this aspect that sucks people in.
As you can imagine, maintaining the number of servers to keep a persistent world in which thousands of people can play at the same time is probably pretty costly. This is where the subscription fees come in. IIRC, WoW costs about $15 per month.
$15 DOES sound high for DC Universe though. I personally think $7-10 would've been more reasonable. For SOE's sake, here's to hoping that the game is good enough to warrant the price of admission. Right now though I don't think that's going to be the case.
You think just because you game on PS3 you should get some sort of discount?
People these days...
JangoWuzHere
I lol'd at that.
TC, there's basically two different types of monetization methods for MMOs.
Subscriptions, and/or micro-transactions.
It just happens that this is a subscription model. There should be no surprises when it comes to MMOs.
[QUOTE="Dahaka-UK"]
$15 a month for a MMORPG is the normal ammount expected.
Mograine
True, but SOE is trying to make a subscription based game on a platform that is all new to it and on another that already has WoW.
It's extremely risky.
Turbine was incredibly successful by changing LotRO free-to-play with micro-transactions.
I read their profits increased 5 fold (which could mean little depending on how much they made before), and their subscription base jumped over two million extra subscribers.
$15 is just too steep given the competition out there, but it is what it is. They gotta get enough money to maintain the servers.

Then I assume they want to keep the servers always low on load :P
lol what did you gutys expect it to be free? any MMO thats new has a subs of around $15:00...... people want mmos......CoolSkAGuy
Yes, and we all know how most new MMOs end.
If people wants an MMO, the biggest titan ever seen in gaming is still there for all to play, and is about to receive a gargantuan overhaul.
Thats reasonable for an MMO. If its worth it depends ofc on whether DCU is actually good.

Indeed.
Well, if you wanna play a MMO on a console, this is about your only choice right now until FF 14 comes out. Not sure if FF 11 is still going on on 360.Really, if they can justify the price with content and the game running great, I dont mind.

I have to dissagre. There is no difference in the information that gets passed down from mag servers and MMO servers. Both are not peer to peer and cost money to the developers to maintain. There is really no excuse to have to pay monthly fees that high now a days specially since hardware is getting really cheap and really fast. Which means it cost less money to maintain the same population with each passing year. That is of course if the code is maximized to allow the least stress to the servers. This is one of the first mmos on a console. While $15 is a pretty standard price for a lot of mmos on PC, I don't think it will work as well on consoles. I don't know why, but I feel like I would be getting more value for my money if I got this on the PC. ycole11
no its not. monster hunter frontier was release for the 360 in japan not to long ago. and the 360 also had ff11 I think(and maybe for the ps2 too). maybe on the ps3, sure but consoles in general, i dont think so
Here, since TC seems unable to provide one (and seemingly unaware of what an MMO is).Link? If it it is $15 a month what did you expect it's a MMORPG.
jasonharris48
And yeh, seems pretty standard for an MMO.
The above mentioned Monster Hunter Frontier Online is ¥1400 per month, and requires Live Gold.
Champions Online, which is somewhat analogous, but without the appeal of the DC Comics license, is also $15 a month I believe.
They seem to be putting a reasonable amount of effort into making DCUO, but even the comic book geek in me can't justify paying $15 a month. Although I'm sure there are people out there who will.

Tell that to APB please :PI think this whole omg its $15 thing is caused by the fact that when people hear Free2Play they believe it. The truth is that a f2p game based on microtransaction ie cash shop can actually cost you more than a standard mmo. Yeah there are people that can play a f2p without buying anything buts thats just making the game harder for yourself than its meant to be. Allods a nice f2p game is murder in the later levels if you do not buy cash shop items.

I cant comment on DC Universe, but the fee for WoW pays for servers, community features, 24 hour support and content updates. Which is pretty reasonable imo.

Yeah and the major reason for the fee are updates and patches. I think console gamers will need to adjust very quickly to the number of patches that an mmo gets. They will also need to learn what downtime and server maintance is.

Well thats what They want youto beleive and you doing as they want to , just like that..
I assure you , servers maintances , bandwidth expenses , personel payments for server maintenances AND support ( including GMs etc ) IS NOT , ( i got a friend that working with BIG companies servers build ups and maintenance in my country ) I assure you IS NOT more than 200.000$$ per month. Now want to add each BIG ( not minor bug fixes ) patch as a work of entire team with monthly fees another 50.000 per patch? Do you want 100.000?!!! Ill add 100k!! So we got a number of 300k dollars MAX. Want more ? 400k!! Want even more? 500k!!!!!!! per patch!
Thats a FREAKIN big gap between 300.000$$//500.000$$ dollars VS 180millions per month!!!!!!!!!!
ALSO , where the @#$ do youknow what server maintainence is , how much it costs and even what server is to be so sure each subs 15$ goes for that?!
Did BLIZZ ever gave its monthly expenses in public for servers maintenance , programmers/personel expenses etc etc etc?...
No , never did never will. Because if they ever will they will take down the myth of "huge server expenses" excuse for their VERY HIGH 15$ fee each sub per month and their 180M per month , each month for more than 2 years now?...!! So before you EVER ever , comment , excuse others greed , learn a thing or 2 of what you talking about and if you dont know at all how things works at least make your statements valid with an official statement about Blizz expenses , a company that makes Billions of revenues each year from a single gameand you think its ...reasonable!!!!
Wake up...
