Crazyguy105
Well, not exactly a Origional IP, but Paradox is Making Crusader Kings 2, CK1 came out back in 1999 i think, or was it 2001?
Solid and varied enough for me.
Resistance 3, Uncharted 3, Killzone 3, Mass Effect 3, Gears Of War 3, Forza 4, Infamous 2, Little Big Planet 2, Twisted Metal reboot, another Ghost Recon, another elder scrolls, Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3, Socom 4, Motorstorm 4 (apocalypse). Now for the new IPs.. The Last Guardian and Homefront. Anyone else bothered by this? Dont get me wrong, all the games i mentioned above will be amazing and i will probably buy most if not ALL of them. BUT it has to be worrisome that there are only 2 NEW original IPs coming this year.HelghastXtremeNo. New IP's this year will be lost in the sea of sequels and will get little to no attention.

Two? Check your math, you're just a little off.
No. New IP's this year will be lost in the sea of sequels and will get little to no attention.Zero_epyon
Don't be surprised if LA Noire is one of the top sellers this year, if Red Dead is any indication. Obviously a different group of guys, and a different type of game, but Rockstar can put games out there in a big way. If it's good, it won't go unnoticed.
Magicka came out this yera, brand new IP that out sold DeadSpace 2 of steam since its launch (and is still in 2nd place, while DS2 is off the list). And it can be bought of GamersGate as well (still needs steam though).
Solid and varied enough for me.
That's a good list right there. I think we'll do just fine this year.[QUOTE="HelghastXtreme"]Resistance 3, Uncharted 3, Killzone 3, Mass Effect 3, Gears Of War 3, Forza 4, Infamous 2, Little Big Planet 2, Twisted Metal reboot, another Ghost Recon, another elder scrolls, Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3, Socom 4, Motorstorm 4 (apocalypse). LA Noire, Brink, Rage, Homefront and the Last Guardian will get plenty of attention.
The Last Guardian isn't new IP. It is based in the same universe as ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. It is different to those games like Yoshi's Island is different to Super Mario World.

Even if this were true, that has nothing to do with originality, you can have an old franchise and still be original.
Unless you show me a list of all games coming out this year and a similar one for past years, all I can say is that it is the same as past years. Sequels are apparently always the majority. Also there are way more than just 2, hopefuly good, new IP's coming out this year.
I can only really blame the consumers for readily throwing their money at the big budget sequels and for being impatient, addicted to graphics (what I mean is, demanding better graphics and ignore the cost/sacrifices such as content for its sake), and fickle.AncientDozerYou can only buy so many games per year. Who's to blame someone for sticking with what they know they like, or favoring established franchises which get all the publisher funding and babysitting that smaller games don't (leading to more polish, usually). If a new IP is handled right, it will stand out among sequels and it will sell, but if it doesn't sell you can't automatically blame whoever chose not to buy it.
Throw in Ghost Trick to start the year. And the innevitable XBLA/PSN stuff, or PC indie stuff. Yeah there will be plenty of new IPs. You just gotta know where to look.
- The Last Guardian
- L.A Noire
- Shadows of the Damned
- Brink
- Catherine
- RAGE
- HomeFront
- The Last Story
- Bulletstorm

Lets not forget Rift, and lets be Honest. TES V: Skyrim will have as much incommen with Oblivion as it had with Morrowind. Theonly similaritiesis its the same world, same gods, and same playable races.

By all rights, Psychonauts was an amazing game. Critics loved it, the gamers who actually tried it loved it (I know I did). It should've sold exceptionally well but it didn't. I'm not saying people are terrible because they stick to the familiar; I'm pointing out it's kind of, well, ironic that people fuss and moan about originality and new Ips and Sequels when really they are the cause. There's no one else to blame. You can only really blame a developer or company for making BAD games or rushing a product. Yeah, I suppose you can fault them for poor advertisement but I've seen plenty of games do well with little to no advertisement.
It's not only about advertising (though that is very important, and publishers are absolutely to blame for not doing it right). Some developers find success when they wouldn't otherwise just by choosing the right platform and price. In the past few years there are tons of small original games doing well on Steam and XBLA that would never have had the same level of attention outside of those venues.
It's easy to say that the COD-playing masses are unfairly ignoring games like Psychonauts, but people who aren't immersed in the games industry like we are can't be expected to even know some of them exist, much less rush out and buy them over a game they're sure to like. The fact that Tim Shafer or Suda 51 or Shinji Mikami created whatever game means nothing to a large section of the market. Which isn't always because they're dullards and only play shooter sequels, but just because they don't have the context that would make them think "Oh, Tim Shafer makes funny and unique games, I'll give this a shot" instead of "This looks like a dumb shovelware platformer for kids" (both totally valid responses). The things that make the game interesting have to be put right in front of them, and that's the responsibility of the companies, because they can't expect everyone to be a gaming nerd and keep up with every new game.

If you make mad money off of rehashing the same thing over and over, are you going to risk making something new? Of course not. You're going to milk it dry. Like all the rock bands or Call of Duty or the Mario Franchise. These days it's damn near impractical now NOT to make a trilogy. Producers make what consumers want and they react to what consumers want/tolerate. Unfortunately consumers appear to have lowered standards as they're willing to shell out big bucks for three maps, horse armor, or paying a lot of money for a alternate colored mount (the sparkly WoW pony, I believe). Infinity Ward/ Treyarch has gotten away with producing what is essentially the same damn game over and over because the people don't care. It's not the worst thing but it's not exactly ideal, either. I agree with a lot of what is said in this post(not the Pyschonauts part. I thought it was rather decent at best). It's just as much what the market(consumer) demands as it is the devs/publishers.
It's incredibly contradicting to say you want something new, and then not support something new when it comes out.jg4xchampMust everything new be supported by everyone, though? Each person has their own definition or expectation of what "something new" should be.
