I just went to vgchartz for the first time in a couple years and if it's accurate then I'm very impressed Sony managed to catch up to the 360 despite the year's head start and cheaper price tag. It makes me wonder, does MS stand a chance if both companies' next consoles release side by side, and Sony's has Bluray + free online? Could it be as easy as PS2 vs Xbox? What do you think MS needs to do in that case?

MS needs more exclusives. Exclusives that use full potential of given platform is what sells it.

That's a lot of assumptions. The next gen Xbox won't be the same as the next gen PS3. They will both be different.

They won't release side by side, Sony took a big hit this gen. BothMS and Sony need this gen to last for a while but more so for sony.

Yeah, Sony does want to prolong this gen as long as possible but if M$ decides to release the next xbox there isn't much choice left for Sony but to upgrade.

MS being MS will probably go 100% cheap casual next gen to try and feed off of Nintendo's success.

If Sony makes it easier to develop games for Playstation 4, especially PC to console ports, they will easily overtake the hardcore console gaming community.

I don't think SONY is in any real hurry for PS4. I know I won't buy the next XBOX out of the gate, I will wait for the first price drop. I in all honestly think Nintendo will be the first to strike as far as releasing a new console. Nintendo has lost much of its momentum and I would not be shocked to hear something about a new Nintendo console at E3 this year.

Considering the strength of the Playstation brand and their dominance in the previous two gens, I'm surprised its taken them this long.

1. Your first mistake was going to vgchartz for accuracy..

2. No one should be surprised that Sony has caught up to the xbox considering Sony's name/brand recognition. Their previous consoles sold over 100 million apiece. You should be more surprised that M$ was able to take a lot of the Sony marketshare.

3. Next gen is up in the air right now because of the Nintendo wii. We don't know if either company will go the casual route to ensure they snag a 70-90 million userbase. As of right now their are too many variables.

Its not about sales anymore. its the brand name. everyone and their mother had a ps2. thats the reason why its still in the market the name, the ps2 was the perfect follow up to a console that change gaming. the ps3 is not going to have that same image. sony got cocky and got hit in the back by their own door. thats why its still gonna be a lost for sony even if they past xbox 360 in sales

I believe the PS3 will overtake the 360 this year, but he stills makes a good point. After a five year generation the PS3 is still in 3rd place. They've basically lost this gen no matter how you slice it.

why? is not like people care about graphics, just look at the Wii. Beside, being old has its advantages like lower development cost so we'll see even more games being developed for the console and through updates they can create whatever pheripherals they want to try and make the experience different like with the MOVE. The PS3 already can do 3D too so an upgrade would add what? better texture, higher resolution and frame-rate? not worth it unless the console's price tag is less than 400 bucks.

ps3 is only close due to japan sales. In NA the 360 has almost doubled the ps3 in sales for the last 5 months. It has even surpassed the wii in sales on a monthly basis.

Tehe, yeppers and also, I don't know why the TC thinks it's a big deal that Sony launched a year later and has must'turd rather then katched'up  and passed 360 a long time ago like "N's" Wii for instance.

I doubt either side is going casual, cost effective is likely though, but even $300 systems if they start designing them now will be a substantial upgrade so we definitly aren't goign to be seeing game cube to wii like upgrades, the systems will easily double/triple in power and still be cost effective.

360 is only still (barely) ahead because of US sales. In Japan, the PS3 has gotten like 10x the 360 monthly sales for like... forever. It has even surpassed the wii in sales on a monthly basis lately.

Please stop using the year head start as a crutch. The Wii was released a year after the 360 and had no problem catching and passing the 360. The only reason the PS3 is in 3rd place for now is Sony's arrogance and greed at the beginning of this generation. They shot themselves in the foot with the $600 price tag and no games.

Most of that catching up that has occurred has been since the Slim's release and the corresponding $299 price point.

You're impressed that the once leader--the company in which dominated before--in the market has still been in last place for four and half years, and was only capable of catching up to the Xbox 360 via a snail-like rate?

Seriously. Are we the only ones that saw Sony make a sixaxis controller when the Wii was getting all the press before launch, or Move and Kevin Butler trying to make fun of Kinect not using buttons. Sony will do what others do, they always do. All of them will try to balance casual/traditional gaming.

OhSnapitz

I've never understood this bashing of VG chartz. Are they 100% accurate? Of course not, but they present a pretty good picture of how well or bad something is doing against the competition. VG chartz hardware sales are almost exactly the numbers given in the press releases that the companies reecently gave out, but they have put in January sales numbers. 360 is 3 million ahead of the PS3 and on VG charts the 360 is 3 million ahead of the PS3. I fail to see how VG chartz isn't being accurate.

NA has been carrying 360 for months now. PS3 is blasting 360 in Japan and has been the leader in other territories for a while. 360 sales in NA have been through the roof, likely due to Kinect.

I think Microsoft will go casual for next gen. The Kinect has caught on, and most of their major game studios have gone multiplatform. Bioware took Mass Effect to the PS3. Bungie and Epic are now making multiplatform games instead of Halo and Gears. That leaves 360 with Forza, Fable, a variety of AA titles, and Kinect. They still have yet to announce any major titles after Gears 3. Everything coming out of Microsoft these days says casual focus. I think Sony will end up taking back the more hardcore fans. Sony takes more chances with games, and most of them have panned out. They own most of their top IPs and developers. They have continued to stress hardcore titles. Rather than go casual with the Move, they are treating it as more of a hardcore gamer accessory. They have been turning a profit even after their backs were against the wall. Things are rolling well for Sony right now. I don't see them backing off all that to try to piggy back on the casual bandwagon.

MS needs more exclusives. Exclusives that use full potential of given platform is what sells it.

Not really, just compare MS's exclusives sales to Sony's, in most cases, MS's exclusives have sold better.

HALO GEARS and Fable are the only great sellers that they have. HALO carries majority of the weight.

I don't see them backing off all that to try to piggy back on the casual bandwagon.-ArchAngeL-777-

Microsoft cannot afford to go casual. Casuals dont really buy games in droves. If they go casual only next gen i think they will fail. They need to be able to strike a balance between Hardcore and Casual to be sucessful. Thats what nintendo did with the Wii
