Yet it got praised alot for its brilliant graphics, voice acting and animations. I just recently finished Deadly Premonition and I have to say this is one of the best games I have ever played !! Brilliant story, THE BEST PROTAGONIST EVER !!!, Exceptional supporting characters, Very Fun Gameplay, Great humor, Originality unlike Uncharted 2 ( The Russians again YAWN !! ) and an overall great and light atmosphere. Yet Deadly Premonition which is a better game than Uncharted 2 got very bad review scores ??

But it's the 2nd best looking game out there besides Crysis. You read the 360 version, not the PC version review. I'd say Metro 2033 on 360 is below even Low on the PC version. I couldn't play the 360 version because it was just too dark (And really ugly.) Nothing even came close this year to matching this. I won't post the pictures because theres a lot of them. Please take a look.

Whilst I agree that the gaming press is too blinded by visuals, animations etc, I still feel Uncharted was a good game.

JUST a good game. Propped up by excellent visuals, animations and a tidy budget.

You haven't seen anything till you play it. :D Sadly it is the 360 version that held it back. I really wanted to send a letter into their editors to find out why Metro was ignored from recognition but I didn't know where to send it to. Its just like last year how Cryostasis was ignored everywhere even though it was the best looking game of last year.

To be fair, innovation and depth are meaningless without polish. A cool idea with a crap execution is a crap idea.

No but they aren't any good. they hold something like U2 automatically above titles setting out to achieve a different goal. While its not a bad thing for said games to be recognized, they do it in a very immature and unprofessional way. Then again, this never claim to be a fair and just industry so what do I expect?

I wouldn't really say that stuff doesn't matter. The importance of polish relies on the type of game you're making, and "navigable UIs, motion capture, voice acting" can add to the immersiveness and feel of the game and don't have to be tied down to a movie-like experience.

I wouldn't really say that stuff doesn't matter. The importance of polish relies on the type of game you're making, and "navigable UIs, motion capture, voice acting" can add to the immersiveness and feel of the game and don't have to be tied down to a movie-like experience.

In regards to the GT5 review, I can see why the reviewer might be annoyed. As superficial as it sounds, graphical inconsistency can be really jarring to the experience.

I can understand that. For instance, in the case of a horror game, a great deal of that material is important. In making a cinematic experience, most of that material is important in achieving that cinematic experience.

But the problem is that's not the only metric for determining the quality of a game, nor is it in any way critical to nailing solid gameplay mechanics. It just has to do with how the game looks and sounds. A game can have none of those things and still have gameplay mechanics so complete that they draw as much as 1,000 hours out of you, sometimes on a fraction of the development budget, with higher levels of consumer satisfaction.

It is completely unjustifiable to have so much focus on that aspect when this is not a cinematic discipline. Games should be primarily judged on their content, which is to say the amount of unique written or visual material and the quality and depth of the gameplay mechanics.

On the opposite end is the polished turd, which unfortunately garnishes far too much attention in this industry.

By the way, regarding GT5; not only is it superficial, it is ridiculous. I cannot fathom what would make a person say that the addition of 800 average looking cars ruins the experience of the 200 fantastic looking cars, particularly when none of the above affects the gameplay experience in any way. How does less than stellar looking content affect your enjoyment of stellar content? Would you prefer less content? It's this kind of mentality that is making this industry less about unique content and more about high repetition of a core of highly polished content. The result is an inferior gameplay experience...

I am with you 1000%, since i play RPGs and deep games myself

My best games are Alan Wake, Demons Souls, Fable 2-3, Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey, Fallout Vegas and yet those got low scores and Uncharted 2 that was a single day boring shooting, a totally mediocre and indifferent game by any standards, got all the praise

Well, gaming IS becoming casual, so it is expected, all complex and good games will have a ceiling at 8/10 in 2011, when a RPG gets 8/10, will be like 10/10 in reality and for real non casual gamers

Nice to see more feel this way, i though i was the last real gamer on the planet :)

Uncharted 2 got a bunch of praise because it's a very well done and excellently paced action-adventure. You act like an 8/10 is a bad score, whilst Demon's Souls and Mass Effect have recieved scores similar to UC2's.

These games that get lower scores aren't scored lower because they're too complex. They're that way because the reviewer feels that they have flaws in their design.
