this could pass for a current-gen budget title. this blows away any console games of that era, except maybe shenmue.
I guess PC was always ahead...what else was I missing back then

Outcast? Really?
If you want to brag about PC graphics in '99 pick something that doesn't suck. The detail and art in stuff like Icewind Dale and Planescape..... The textures and rendering speed in Quake 3..... The lighting in Unreal...
Outcast was bad tech with a freaking 50 ft. playable draw distance from your very low detail character. Also add in overlapping skyboxes and water effects with no physics, and a huge helping of crap gameplay.
This thread needs a quick abortion.

i'm strictly talking about graphics d!ckhead. this guy mentions planescape torment and its is one of the worst looking games i've ever seen. not to mention the gameplay was already outdated in '99 when it came out
it's barely PS2 looking.
HAZE-Unit
Yeah... I think TC may have exaggerated a bit.
Not bad for 1999 though.
I'm actually somewhat surprised by how good that looks.
Like someone else said, Shenmue blows this game away but I'm still impressed.
Outcast didnt age very well, it was much more impressive when it came out.
You missed a lot, thats for sure. But not only in terms of graphics development, in terms of gameplay too.
One of my favourite games of all time happens to be 1999 too.

Shenmue on the Dreamcast
Unreal Tournament, Quake 3, Tribes
These all took a dump on that game ( i know im missing more)
I'm actually somewhat surprised by how good that looks.

1999 was the year Dreamcast came out and it was indeed impressive, but as soon as in 2000 it was outmatched by PC graphics as devs got the grip to develop for then-cutting edge first GeForce GPU ever, the mighty GeForce 256 (that I happened to fry in my PC when I played Quake 3 Arena for like 15 hours straight with friends on LAN  )
If this doersn't look impressive to you, look at some candid footage of what PS1 was doing cause that's what many of us were playing at the time while waiting for Dreamcast to fail and PS2 to rise.
Fastforward 3 years... drool.jpg.
Bikouchu35
Yeah, this is how fast graphics developed back then. You had to buy new GPU like every other year if you wanted to enjoy new games. Those were the days.

 Peed my pants on how good it looked. I played Counterstrike and starcraft then I tried the demo for this. 8500 le and gf3 ti 500 nom.
Halo on PC and Mac in 1999 was still a tech demo whereas Outcast was on the shelf ready to buy. Big big difference.[QUOTE="walkingdream"]I think your being a bit optimistic The Halo on Mac demo looked better than that in 99-Unreal-
It was entirely in game and there was actual gameplay. Not such a big difference

Okay. Rewind back to when Outcast was in development and not on the shelf. Doesn't matter if Halo's was real-time, in-game. I'm well aware it was. The point is that you could go back to when Outcast was in development and have the same view as with Halo. That way you're going back even more, making it even more impressive.Halo on PC and Mac in 1999 was still a tech demo whereas Outcast was on the shelf ready to buy. Big big difference. Yeah i know that's why i stated it was a demo. Think he was being a bit optimistic that's all.[QUOTE="walkingdream"]I think your being a bit optimistic The Halo on Mac demo looked better than that in 99-Unreal-
The game used Voxels instead of polygons which means it could not be accelerated by 3d hardware....The game was in heavy development as 3d cards were coming out,by then it was too late to change so by the time the game was released it was outdated......still the best (maybe only?)open world game that didnt use 3d hardware and actually ran on old school 2d cards....
1999? If I recall correctly, I was still a Quakehead although burnout (with FPS games) was starting to seep in. I have two favorite games from that year: Dungeon Keeper 2 and World War 2 Fighters.
I thought the shell casings falling from the aircraft was pretty neat.
Outcast is an amazing action-adventure game and it was really impressive back in 1999, with lots of visual effects way ahead of it's time. But I have to disagree.
Now this 2002 game looks like it could pass as a recent one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKyRv84mFI0
How exactly are voxels different to polygons? And why aren't we seeing games using voxels? The game used Voxels instead of polygons which means it could not be accelerated by 3d hardware....The game was in heavy development as 3d cards were coming out,by then it was too late to change so by the time the game was released it was outdated......still the best (maybe only?)open world game that didnt use 3d hardware and actually ran on old school 2d cards....

And voxels are experiencing mini-reneissance thesed days with indie games, because they work well for games with deformable terrains.

This is more impressive.

LOL
any pc game where you cant enter a server ip address like call of duty matchmaking will never be capable of doing it.
battlefield 3 wont either because by the time it's playable on phones ea will have all the servers shut down and you cant host your own.
