First, I've put more time (and many people) in oblivion than ANY jrpg...
Second, bioshock is not an rpg.
The difference with wrpgs and jrpgs is that you might have a shorter main quest in wrpgs (not always the case), but you have a lot more extra stuff to do if you so wish.
JRPG = 5 hours gameplay, 10 hours cutscenes, 30 hours grinding.Wartzay

WRPG's let the player decide. if you just want the bare story you can rush through in 10-20 hours. if you want more you can take up side quests which add to the plot and story. that takes the game to 50+ hours.
If by long and epic you mean runs out of gas twelve totwentyhours in when you realize how boring and stale it is then yeah.
Most of the JRPGs I have played recently have been incredibly boring after a short period of time and they have virtually no side content or additional gameplay.
FF12 is winnar though.
WRPGs are about more than the "main quest".
I've put over 55 hours into Oblivion as of now and I've barely touched the main storyline.
I enjoy the flexibility in WRPGs, which allow for far less linearity than the typical JRPG.
You could say that... but a lot of JRPG's are just grinding as that one guy mentioned. rolo107A lot of WRPG are just quests, go there do that, come back claim prize... See what I did here?
They are both great lines both lines are memorable...
In the end I think we are fortunate to have both... For one though some WRPG's may seem shorter then a JRPG, they also alot of way more replay value..
Prime examples of these would have to be Baldur's Gate series, Planescape Torment, KOTOR, and Vampire the Masqueardes..
I honestly wouldn't use Oblivion as a example, because its a de-evolution of gameplay imo.. Where numerous materials have been dumbed down.. Where the "claimed" customization isn't really customizable.. You get a decision between heavy armor and light armor.. guess what they are the exact same thing in the end.. Same when it comes to blades and blunts etc etc..
Oblivion is one of the longest games ever made. Don't try and cop out with the "main story" crap, the game is huge and epic. I pumped an easy 60 hrs into it and didn't even complete the main quest. The guild quest lines are amazing, and exploring Tamriel is great fun. Oblivion is huge, calling it a short game is just wrong, no matter how you try and spin it.
JRPGs are mostly cutscenes and conversations, which extends the length a ton. Don't get me wrong, I love both genres equally, but a generalization like WRPGs are short and JRPGs are long is just plain wrong.
The Japanese are the creators of the most in depth games of our times. If it wasn't for the Japanese gaming would be pointless.300pound_Ninja
In depth as in defined by long pointless and boring cutscenes in every part of the game.
Honostly, why does everyone rate a JRPG by how long it takes to watch the cutscenes and do every meaningless side quest and then rate every WRPG by how long it takes to complete the main quest alone.
In Oblivion, I'm working on building up in both the assassins and fighters guildes, becoming the Arena Grand Champion and then I'll start working on the main quest followed by Shivering Islands. I guerentee it will take longer to complete then most of the JRPG's I've played...

How can you ever argue about the godliness of Final Fantasy? Next you'll tell me MGS is all a bunch of movie clips.

I agree with your general points, but Oblivion did feel that it was lacking in content, compared to other free-roaming RPGs.
I've spent almost twice as long with a single character in Morrowind (over 150 hours) than I have with all of my characters in Oblivion (80-90 hours).
It also lacks in replay value, since there's only really one way to do most quests.
Mass Effect is 12 hours?
I've played for slightly over 6 and I am in the very beginning. I have to go to Feros and Noveria, right now im lookin for Matriach Benezia's sister, or whoever you have to find. I've been doing side quests and exploring for the most part.

It took me about 21 hours to complete the game and I didn't even visit all the planets or do all the sidequests.. I can't see clearing this game in 14 hours..

I love it when people argue about genres when comparing them when in reality they've hardly even played one of the two.

Except that what they said is pretty much true.

It'll probably take me a good 40 hours to complete the game. I just love exploring and doing all that stuff. People complain about replay value and length of games, yet they do speed runs in every game. I'm not in a rush to beat the game, I already saw the ending (I didn't think I would play through Mass Effect because I kind of hated the combat, so I was curious to see how the game ended) but then after awhile I got used it.
