I say that WRPG's blow JRPG's out of the water.Western Role Playing games have better character creation,Most JRpg's have no character creation.WRPG's have more depth you can be good, bad or in between, you can tell some one to kiss off,or sway a girl into liking you.Bastilla anyone?LOL!!! You can equip armor, rings, medallions, helmets, swords and more at the same time. You can build or make your own cool weapon or armor or items then enchant them and make em even better.

The story is also very good and you get to make choices that can affect the outcome beat that!

WRPGs, because they have characters you can relate to (sometimes), and a story tree you can effect on your own.

Japanese role playing games are the best JRPG's

Western role playing games are the best WRPG's

They're too different to ever be compared. I don't understand why people try to do it so often.

Keep in mind that these are generalizations and that there are exceptions:

JRPG strengths: Deeper stories, more emotional involvement, better soundtracks, more cinematic

WRPG strengths: better character customization, more open-ended choices, better skill trees/leveling

Whats the strenth and weakness?

WRPGs have free roam and more role playing elements to them, a more interactive combat system for the most part but the story is very player driven where your actions effect, if not shape, the world around you and you get to create your own char. Jrpgs have flashy well done cut scenes and better char. development and usually a more epic story turn based combat makes it less involved but can be more tactical WRPGs don't usually have cut scenes or much in the way of player directed conversations (people talking about you with your name and what not) due to the customize char., the story tend to be less epic and usually lack any epic boss battles JRPGs dont let you create your own char. they get stuck with a set progression of skills/spells, set restrictions to equipment. The tend to be linear and you cant free-roam you don't have any choice in the matter bearing what side you choose of a conflict(usually) and your impact on the world outside of the mandatory (main story) is minimal if there at all

Deeper?Emotional Involvement? KOTOR anyone! Nothing beats going to the star forge telling bastila that you care for her then giving her the bright side of the light saber. Then telling malak hes to weak , then killing him and reclaiming your sith empire.OR turning bastila back to the light, trying to trun malak back and saving the republic. Thats epic and emotional. NeverWinter Nights also has a lot of that stuff as does baldur's gate and more.

Thats a really good comparison.I could care less about the cut scenes and how do they have better character devopment.do you mean story wise? I still say that kotor and pretty much any bioware game is better at that. When you feel like your in it ,its better! The epic story in those JRPG's involves some far out planet destroying monster and they have used it so much its not that epic to me any more. However I am a big fan of final fantasy 4,7,12,Skies of arcadia, and chrono cross though.

Overall I prefer wrpg's over jrpg's. I can't stand the type of protagonist they tend to have in jrpg games and how the story tends to be similar with other jrpg games. I wish they had more jrpg games that had complex story such as Xenogears.

It depends. I would say older JRPGs are a lot better than most WRPGs, but the current day JRPGs are pretty bad. There's a few good ones, but most of them are just garbage. Honestly, I can't even tell if certain characters are men or women. I'm not saying Tales of Vesperia is a bad game, but everyone in it looks like a woman. Not to mention most current day JRPGs are full of cheesy, overly dramatic storylines and unbelievable Mary Sue like characters.

*facepalm* You're NOT suppose to have bearing over the story! I don't decide what to do the CHARACTER does the dev does, you play that role set before you. For the SOLE purpose of seeing the story to its predestined conclustion.

Think about it, an actor plays a "role" in a play, he can't just change lines, other wise he would be just improving not playing any role at all, just doing whatever the hell he wants.

In a role playing game you pick something you would like to be and its ben they way well before JRPG's came into the picture son.You also get to make choices that affect the story and WRPG's have that.

Oh god, I hated the Witcher. The main character sounded like a kid trying to pull off a deep voice. Even the gamespot article mentioned it.

There are definitely more crappy jrpg's than there are crappy wrpg's, but in terms of the quality titles that arrive here, I'd have to say they're pretty even. There are so many problems w/ the typical wrpg in terms of story it's not even funny. In this case, excessive freedom actually totally destroys role playing. In a lot of WRPG's, there are set stories that you have to go through, but at the same time, you can be black or white in terms of how jesus/satan like you are. Yet the story still plays out in largely the same manner?! One of the worst examples of this is Fallout 3. The story makes NO sense if you're an evil character. So what you're doing is just randomly interacting with the world in a ahole-ish manner and just plodding through the story because it's pretty nonsensical if you're evil.

The character customization from a gameplay standpoint is always sooooo superior in wrpgs, but from an rp standpoint? not exactly. You have a fair amount of freedom, but 99% of the time, even in great games like mass effect, you're choosing black and white choices of good vs evil. Lets be seroius, no one really finds a character they'd love to play if the responses possible are so black and white. There's often a "middle" response that's usually akin to not saying anything.

The advantage with jrpg's is that you're not really supposed to roleplay. You're seeing the story through a set character's eyes. It's more like watching a movie or reading a book, much less interactive, and therefore it's much easier for every piece to make sense together. If you find a character you really connect with in a jrpg, chances are you could never create a character with that much depth in a western rpg, not even close, without freakish amounts of out-of-game imagination. But then it's almost like playing dnd.

I think 99% of jrpg's have excessively tedious gameplay though, which puts wrpg's as a whole up by a slight margin in my book. I still am pissed off with every game going this good and evil route. ME was a step in the right direction for bioware from kotor and jade empire (bleeeeehhhhh), now if only the character actually says what you tell him/her to say, and some renegade choices are still a little too pure evil to make sense in the story.

[QUOTE="fubbal"][QUOTE="LittleHands134"] Fallout 3? If so, I'd say Final Fantasy 4 wins hands down. Maybe not in graphics, but in gameplay.LittleHands134

HAHAHAHA!! Thats funny. What gameplay might you be talking about?

My nostalgia goggles are telling me the gameplay is far superior.

Thats funny again. I was also talking about fallout 1 VS FF 4. You start out going out into the bleak world looking for a waterchip to replace the one in your vault.Thats vault 13 to be exact. You design a character or pick one if you want. You adjust stats, skills, perks and 2 of these other things but I forget what they are called. You get to influence the story by picking what you would like to say and it has multiple ending's based on all of this.

JRPGs are not games. They're movies which require you to press a button every few minutes and tilt a joystick at all other times. Remove the gameplay and you have pretty much the same thing only without all the pointless drivel between cinematics. A game shouldn't be passed off as interactive entertainment if you can remove the actual game from it.

I like WRPGs. Player choice which shapes the game world, character customisation, real time combat, less angst and the men can't be mistaken for women.

But to each their own.

Im sure technically in most aspects WRPGs are better. Less linear and less cliched(except for the part where almost every WRPG has a mute protagonist in a mid evil setting). But I rpefer JRPGs. I prefer to know where to go and what to do next mos of the time. They're typically more colorful and the voice acting isnt as bad. Linearity really isnt a down side to me at all.
