WTF is wrong with MSFS

Some of you may recall my rants about the MONTHS it took me to actually get this game to install on my computer.

Well, it finally did. Played it a bit. But then I tried to play it yesterday and - hey! 50GB "patch". This patch took over a day and 3 restarts to "install"

Except now it thinks my computer is an XBox One and wants a disc to run.

It's a GAMEPASS game. ON PC. There's no such thing as a disc for this version of the game.

I have hundreds - literally hundreds of games - on my PC and the only ones I've had this amount of trouble with since like 199X are MS first and second party titles played through their own goddam store. My god, I used to make my way through extended memory and shit in DOS

I don't get it. I know this is SW and people are going to assume I'm trying to promote Sony or some bullshit, but I simply don't get it - it's Microsoft games on Microsoft's own store on their own Operating System. And yet those games are the only ones in my library with fatal crashes due to known memory leaks that go unfixed despite tons of forum threads sitting ignored for years (FH3 and FH4), a bug where you have to edit an INI to even run the game each time (AoE "definitive edition" - also a known bug you can find tons of people begging for them to fix, and you have to do it each time because Win10 "fixes" the file each time you restart it), a bug where the game freezes the entire computer at the splash screen (ReCore), don't get me started on MCC, and then this shit. Jesus Christ.

But it's beyond infuriating - it's like it is designed to make I_P feel justified in his hatred of PC or something.

It's a ploy to get you to buy an XSX, duh.

@xantufrog: Th pic of your screen is upside down... Why didn't you take a screenshot? You're on a PC, but took a pic of your screen with your phone?!?! And it ends up being upside down. Makes me think the issue here is user error

@xantufrog: You know, many won't admit it, but I run into a ton of issues trying to play older and more obscure games.

I usually just google the error like in your example "MS Flight sim wants a disc to run" and then I read up on the internet if anyone else got the exact same issue and how they fixed it.

Or PCgamingwiki might have the issue listed with a fix.

My experience with the game was flawless. Well near flawless, had two crashes in the many hours I've played it, fortunately not during flight (that would make me mad).

I don't know, if you keep having issues with MS products and only with MS products just stop buying or subscribing them?

@goldenelementxl: that's some bullshit dude. First of all, it's not upside down for me. Second of all, what's wrong with taking a photo of this? In case you are unaware, MSFS is know to fail its updates if you move away from its window being the main front one. So you'll forgive me if after a day of updating that I'm not going to take the screen and upload it directly from the same computer itself while I'm trying to get it to finish.

Lastly, if you wanted to be helpful, you might have googled and discovered, as I did last night, that this is also a known bug and you have to uninstall an incorrectly sourced file that causes this license error.

So save the condescension - odds are I've been doing this at least as long as you

The upside down photo thing is a GameSpot glitch. The only way I got it to work is to use the large size.. I think..

For anyone else who might have acquired this issue with the latest update

From Microsoft:

Microsoft Flight Simulator

Known Issue: Some users seeing a "Please insert the Microsoft Flight Simulator disc" error when launching the game on Windows 10.

Workaround: In order to play the game digitally on Windows 10, you will need to have the Digital Ownership File installed as it is required to grant the necessary permissions to play. If you already have this file installed and are running in to this error, please uninstall and reinstall this file only and this should resolve the issue.

Flight Simulator 2020 has a disc version on PC but only in Europe. It's on 12 DVD discs. PC Game Pass uses the Windows Store for downloading and updating games, including the disc version of MFS2020.

Typically this error is caused by an issue with a firewall setting.

@Bond007uk: the solution from xbox support above got me back on track - have to locate and reinstall the borked digital ownership file. Then rebooted it and it resumed the update (so far...)

Yeah, shit GS image posting. Sucks that you are having so many issues with MS games. I haven't played MSFS, but I remember FH3 was a disaster when it launched (great now) and Quantum Blur was also a disaster. FM7 still has stuttering/hitching issues after all these years. The early days with UWP games were so bad.

@BassMan: UWP was rough. GameCore seems more native and hopefully would have less issues.

It's probably a problem with UWP/Windows Store. I can't really comment as I haven't yet tried any game/app from Windows Store.

This game was so cursed, it starting affecting Xantu's photo uploads. 😂 I did have like one initial install issue with this game, but that's it. Weird how the experience has been so varied with people.

There's an entire sect of PC gamers that buy and put together old PC parts to make PCs from the era of games they are trying to play. Because of issues like this, AND games from long ago were made with specific hardware in mind, a lot of older games don't sound right on a modern computer, for example, because there were made for a specific sound card in mind.

I love running games in ultrawide or at high framerates, and some games that I run are from times where such things didn't even exist.

I love the PCgamingwiki, because in one glace I can see if a game for example has ultrawide, high framerate and 5.1 audio support. It's great!

yea, the MSFS install/update system is ridiculous. I dont understand why it can't just work the same as other games and install/update in the background without needing to launch it.

I had some significant problems the first time I tried to install it and had to download a windows upgrade ISO or something I cant remember exactly. It didn't even give me an error it'd just go the splash screen after launching the game and get stuck.

fortunately it worked fine/updated fine after that but I can't say I've gone back to it for a while. I'd probably play it more but when I occasionally get the urge to fly around, by the time its done updating it'll be gone. Its like you have to predict that you might have an urge to play it in a day and update it ahead of time lol

Yup - my desire to play died sometime in the last day of updating it... we'll see if it runs next time I want to play it
