Nintendo To Begin Charging Money For Some Online Gaming

Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection service has always been entirely free of charge, but the company will soon introduce a pay-to-play service for some games, it announced at Game Developers Conference.

"Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Pay And Play" will let users subscribe on a game-by-game basis to certain titles. Nintendo project leader Takashi Aoyama announced the service at GDC, but did not say what upcoming games would require payment for the service, or how much they would cost.

To avoid customer confusion, Pay-And-Play games will have a red icon on the game's box that reads Pay And Play, in place of the traditional blue Wi-Fi Connection icon, which will only be used for games that are free to play.

This is a pretty big change for Nintendo, who has always been adamant about wanting online gameplay to be free. While this might attract more developers to the service with a new revenue stream, it also might confuse consumers -- and be a hassle if the payment system isn't easy. You'll use Wii Points to pay for the online gaming, so it should be interesting to see if this extends to the DS Lite or if it's just restricted to Wii.

WTF???

"Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Pay And Play"

I'm willing to bet that's for games like Animal Crossing, which i'm absolutly fine with if its a constant game world (in other words visiting other peoples villages long after its been d/c or turned off).

oh please. dont start screaming "the sky is falling"

they arent gonna charge you to play online. this has something to do with wiiware, not the full retail games.

maybe if they come out with an MMO or something like that

Sounds like an Animal Crossing/Pokemon/Zelda (hey, you never know) MMO is in the works. Does this mean we'll get voice chat, or am I going to have to pay my X dollars just so I can talk to my buddies over Skype?

i think they need to reverse their slogan from "Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Pay And Play" to "Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Play And Get Paid", Now THAT would be a TRUE revolution in gaming! 8)

Why get mad, CAn you seriously not afford what cheap price they will offer. why is this such a big deal to sony and nin fans about xboxlive costing money?

While there is no doubt this is very hypocritical of Nintendo, I do not necessarily have problem with that. I am fine with P2P online, because truth be told, I easily prefer it, it means seeing some dramaticimprovements with Nintendo and their Wi-Fi Service. However, if does not, or the difference is insignificant, than, I agree with those in calling this bull**** move.

I think its the danger of charging by game and not by service. $7 per game is a lot different than $7 to play any game you have.

$7 a month is more than XBL, and Nintendo is charging on a per game basis, so there's a good chance this Pay-and-Play service will cost more than XBL does. And no, someone living on the street couldn't afford $7 a month.

i think the big problem is that while it really scuks that you have to pay for xbox live, MS make it head and shoulders above the rest. Sony doesnt ahve much going for it right now until home and the in-game xmb turns up, but thats ok because its not like you're paying for a lack of features.

But seriously, if this isnt just for an MMO, then how the hell can nintendo justify paying to enter friend codes? It would need an entire revamp of the online system, and to be honest, i dont think its their target audience that will be using this anyway.

I wish most cows and sheep would realize that its about business and until microsft has online competition the features you see on xboxlive and possibly nintendos online servive you wont be able to find on the ps3. Comes down to you get what you payed for. I find it disturbing for sheep b/c having to pay to play every game is a little suicidal i think given microsofts current possition with xboxlive.

Console gaming is proving to be more and more pathetic at every turn. While the PC and the Handhelds right now seem to be able to do no wrong.

Their online is no where near good enough to charge even a penny for it!! It has the worst onlines game library (before brawl), worst online features.... no where near the calibur of Live...

Nintendo can't even provide xbox 1 features like voice chat...

maybe they are planning on start releasing MMO"s for the wii, that would make more sense since those games really have a reason behind the Fee's

Sony is probably going to because if they see Nintendo to start the pay to play online thingy, then Sony will probably be like, "hey if they are charging, we should too" :(

Well, there is a Maplestory game for the Wii... could it be?

Eponique

I posted this somewhere else Nexon the makers of Maplestory have a contract with Nintendo to make MMOs. This would be a good reason for the cost.
