while i liked heavy rain, it shouldn't be a candidate for GOTY. i haven't played GOW3 yet but it's coming in the mail this week so i'll be able to see what all the hype is about.
I don't even think GOW3 is that good. I would give it an 8 or 8.5. However, i am admittedly tired of button mashers. However I think GOW2 was one of the best game ever. I played the demo of HR and really enjoyed it. I'll have to rent the full version.
HR deserves mentions for taking an unpopular approach and crafting a very good game out of it, but I can't say it deserves GOTY. It would be like the Oscars then, give it to the artistic, avant-garde critical darling and ignore the broader movies with less art-house appeal but far more of a lasting impact. Games awards are not like movie awards. Avatar would have won GOTY, not The Hurt Locker.
I love how the obvious fanboys who you know would never touch a PS3 game have such a strong opinion on HR and GOWIII. This gen is way too far in for such ridiculous fanboyism.
Gow 3 was a giant rehash inferior to its prequels so it's not really surprising. Also if you listen to their podcasts you would know most of the editors view the game as a disappointment.
Wow that editor should be given a medal. He was smart enough to look past the gaggles of fanboys and put in the games that should be the contenders for GOTY.

I'm not accepting it. I think it's the best action/beat em up this gen. If it didn't live up to anyone's personal hype that's their own issue, learn to manage expectations.

Mate you should have been here last gen! The board is a varitable love fest compared even with a couple of years ago. I haven't played HR so can't comment on that, but GOW3 might be amongst the best of its genre, but does that genre really square up to ME2 or RDR? I know the sheep will get mad at me saying this (esp as I haven't played it! *sees them sharpening their swords* ) but I'd say the same for SMG, just as a personal matter of taste.

I'm assuming most of us can at least agree that Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are the top three GotY contenders thus far.
GOW3 would be in my top 5 for this year as of right now but I still haven't played Alan Wake yet so it could get bumped. HR did nothing for me, except put me to sleep, what a major let down that game was.
In my opinion Bayonetta is a better action game and more enjoyable than GoW series as a whole can be. But hey... that's my opinion, and Bayonetta awesome...
Heavy Rain was a fun ride, but it had too many nagging flaws to be placed in the same group as games like Mass Effect 2, SMG2, and Red Dead Redemption. God of War 3 on the other hand, deserves consideration. It should be given a nomination, but it shouldn't be given the win.
He's right about ME2, altough personally so far my GOTY is AW.

I agree with him leaving out heavy rain, it was good, but not GOTY material. I cant see mass effect 2, it just couldnt hook me. I am still playing it, but in very small doses.

I have to agree that neither GoW3 nor Heavy Rain deserve a Game of Year title. GoW3, was at least to me, a disappointment, of the trilogy had the weakest story, the gameplay was very similar to all the past iteration (I mean literally just an HD shine kind of similar) and it was a sit down and done kind of game. Heavy Rain was to me a much better game, but as someone above me mentioned, it is essentially too out there to really be a game of the year candidate. The replayability of the game is quite impressive though.

While I have not played Super Mario Galaxy 2 the critical acclaim puts it as literally one of the best games of all time, the other two games are incredible. Mass Effect 2 has an awesome story, is a ton of fun to play, and is a memorable experience to this day. I still want to go back and watch the launch trailer, or a quick youtube video of the final ending scenes of the game, just because of how impressed I was by it.

Basically I agree with the opinion and more importantly it is just an opinion, of one site and one guy. Hes got just as much right to it as someone who believes the GoW3 should be given the crown already as its nigh on inevitable...

Gow3 is great but I don't think it deserves goty because it was lacking big time in the replayability department it was nothing like the past two gow's. Heavy rain can't say much about it haven't played it but from what I have seen I don't think that should be added but hey don't worry plenty of games this year that have a chance of winning it. I have a bad feeling mass effect 2 is gonna win it.
GoW3 nor heavy rain deserve GOTY this year. They were both GREAT games but when compared to games like Mass effect 2, super mario galaxy 2 and red dead redemption they just don't compete.
I've played all these titles and this is just my opinion because GoW3 and Heavy rain both lacked value much like Alan wake. When you beat the game it just isn't that fun to come back to. With ME2 you have multiple clases (if i spell it the other way it's censored?) to come back to and the ability to play as bad or good the second play through to see how it turns out which ups the value. With GoW3 and Heavy rain it's just more of the same.
GOTY this year so far will be between RDR, ME2 and Super Mario Galaxy 2. I'd imagine halo reach, crysis 2, possibly fable 3 and Gears of war 3 to be added to the competition aswell.
Eh Idk about Mega Man 10 haven't played it but ME2 is superb and RDR certainly looks deserving. As for GOW3, really no way is it on par with some of the other games out this year. Its great graphically and a lot of fun, but pretty much just a re-hash (not to mention a hack n slash) of GOW2. I'm never in favor of a Platformer or a Hack n slash getting GOTY though, maybe I'm just a bit biased but I want my GOTY to have a real story. I think the more games with good stories there are, the better for the industry. It helps progress it into a more serious medium.
Plus storytelling is one of the essential pastimes of the human race even back to the stone ages. Call me wayyy old school ;) but games with great stories really appeal to me. Of course the game itself has to be good too, but...

100% agree GOW3 is a lot of fun and the top of its genre, and same goes for SMG2, but it seems to me they are almost the same formula with updated graphics and gizmos of games that came out 15 years ago. I don't want to get pounded for saying so, but a game like ME2 could not have been accomplished 15 years ago which is where it fundamentally differs from the other two, and helps to progress the entire video game industry.
Though I actually think HR should be a contender for GOTY contrary to what most others seem to think.

The editor they are talking about is colin. This man would pick a nes game any day of the week then any other game. He believes retro is the main way games should be. Which is why taking his thought on GOTY is a joke.
